To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD A. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at IValtham, in the county of MiddleseX and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road Planers and Smoothers or Scrapers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in road planers and smoothers, or scrapers.
' An important object of the invention is to provide a machine of the above mentioned character, which is of simplified construction, and embodies parts readily adjustable to meet the required conditions.
A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the machine may be readily transported upon wheels, when not in use.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during'the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, Figure 1 is a plan view of a machine embodying the invention, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of a vertically movable carriage, showing the ground treating implements carried thereby, Fig. 4 is an enlarged side elevation of one of the runners included in the machine, showing adjustable wheel carrying means connected therewith, Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 55 of Fig. 4, Fig. 6 is a detail side elevation of adjusting means for the carriage, Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a cutting element or planer, and Fig. 8 is a similar view of a scraper.

Rigidly connectedwith the runners 10 are vertical posts 14, spaced as shown, and adapted to fit within recesses or notches 15 provided at the corners of a vertically movable bed'plate or carriage 16, as more clearly shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 6. Thisbed. plate is provided adjacent the j notches 15 with notches 17 which receive the screws 17, hereinafter described. Thenumeral 16 designates hand holes in the bed plate, whereby the cutters and blades therebelow may be ad justed. Means are provided to raise and lower each corner of the bed plate or carriage 16, comprising an operating screw 17, the lower end of which contacts with the upper surface of the runner 10, as more clearlyshown in Fig. 6. The screw 17 has its upper portion loosely mounted withinan apertured plate 18, rigidly attached to the top of the bed plate 16 by means of bolts 19. The screw 17 operatesthrough the said opening 17 .and a recess 21, within which is arranged a bearing 22,-having a screw-threaded opening for. receiving'the screw-threaded portion of the screw 17. The bearing 22 cannot turn within the recess 21, and may be formed square or other than circular in plan so that it cannot turn. Asbest shown in Fig. 6 the upper side of each bearing 22 is rounded in order to permit the bearing to rock in its respective recess 21 and prevent binding of the screw that itreceives.
The numeral 23 designates cutters, teeth, or planers, the lower ends of which are tapered or beveled and have diamond-shaped points as shown at 24. These cutters have reduced shanks 25, adapted to fit within openings 26 formed in the bed plate 16, and be-rigidly retained therein by any suitable means. The outters 23 are shown as arranged in angular groups, but the invention is not restricted to this precise arrangement.
Each group of cutters 23' describes an obtuse angle, and theapeX of the angle is toward one end of the bed plate 16 so that the apparatus will work equally well irrespective of the direction in which it is moved endwise. Disposed between the groups of cutters 23 are scrapers or smoothers, designated as a whole by the numeral 27. 'As shown in Fig.3 these scrapers 27 are arranged parallel to each other and inclined with respect to the longitudinal axis of the machine, though the invention .is, not restricted to this precise arrangement. Each scraper comprises an L-shaped body portion 28, having holes 29 to receive bolts 30, adapted to be passed through bolt holes 31 in the bed plate 16, whereby the body portion 28 is rigidly secured to the bed plate. As clearly shown in Fig. 1, the bolt holes 31 are arranged in spaced groups disposed at opposite sides of the center of the bed plate 16 and between the groups of openings 26.
The numeral 32 designates a blade, included in each. scraper, and preferably formed of chilled steel plate, and secured to the body portion 28 by bolts 33.
In order that the machine may be conveniently transported when not in use, I provide wheels 34, arranged upon the outer sides of the runners 10. These wheels are pivotally mounted in-the outer forked ends of vertically swinging levers 35, pivoted upon bolts 36, which are rigidly secured to blocks 37 rigidly attached to the outer sides of the beams 10. The inner 'ends of these levers 35 are loosely mounted in apertured ears 38, attached to carriages 39,'as shown. Eachcarriage 39 is provided with a screw-threaded opening for receiving the lower end of a screw 40, having a hand wheel 41. This screw is vertically arranged and is loosely mounted through an apertured bracket 42, rigidly attached to the beam or runner 10, as shown at 43. Rings 44, rigidly secured to the screw 40, prevent its longitudinal movement, but permit it to turn.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows: The machine is drawn over the roadbed by any suitable means. Either or both ends of the bed-plate or carriage 16 may be vertically adjusted, by manipulation of the screws 17, according to the inclination or grade of the road-bed, being treated. The teeth or cutters 23 tend to plow or cut up the road-bed while the blades 32 smooth the same ofi. Particular attention is called to the fact that the cutting points of the cutters in one set are oppositely arranged with respect to those of the cutters in the other set, whereby one set will function when the machine is drawn-in either direction.
When the machine is not in use and it is desired to transport it for a considerable distance, the screws 40 are operated, to cause the carriages 39 to rise. This upward movement of these carriages swings the inner ends of the levers 35 upwardly, whereby the wheels 34 are moved downwardly below the runners 10, and take the entire support of the machine ofl of the runners.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from thespirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
1. In a machine for the purpose described, the combination of a supporting frame comprising spaced runners, ground-treating means disposed between the runners, means carrying said ground-treating means and supported on the frame, longitudinally-disposed vertically-movable levers fulcrumed at intermediate points on the sides of the runners, wheels carried by the outer arms of said levers, vertically-movable carriages connected with the inner arms of said levers and having vertical threaded apertures, bearings on the runners, and vertical screws mounted and held against downward movement in said bearings and engaging the threaded apertures in said carriages.
2. In a machine for the purpose described, the combination of a supporting frame comprising spaced runners and posts fixed on the runners, ground-treating means disposed between the runners, verticallymovable means carrying said ground-treating means and receiving said posts at its corners, whereby said vertically-movable means is guided and held against both longitudinal and lateral displacement by the posts, threaded bearings in said vertically-movable means, and upright screws arranged in and engaging said bearings and bearing downward-1y on the runners.
3. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a supporting frame comprising runners, of vertical posts rigidly connected therewith, a bed-plate provided at its corners with notches to receive the posts, adjusting screws carried by the bed-plate and having their lower ends contacting with the runners, and ground treating implements depending from the bed-plate.
4. In a machine for the purpose described, the combination of a supporting frame comprising spaced runners and posts fixed on the runners, ground-treating means disposed between the runners, verticallymovable means carrying said ground-treating means and receiving said posts at its corners, whereby said vertically-movable means is guided and held against both longitudinal and lateral displacement by the posts; said vertically-movable means having horizontal recesses in its edges adjacent to its ends, bearings loosely arranged and held against turning in said recesses and having threaded apertures and also having rounded upper sides, and upright screws extending through and engaging the threaded apertures of said bearings and bearing downwardly against the runners.
5. In a machine for the purpose described, the combination of a supporting frame, a bed plate arranged on said frame and having transverse groups of depending cutters, each group of cutters describing an obtuse angle with its apex outermost or toward an end of the supporting frame, and depending scrapers carried by the bed plate and disposed between said angular groups of cutters.
6. In a machine for the purpose described, the combination of a supporting frame, a bed plate arranged on said frame and having transverse groups of depending cutters, each group of cutters describing an obtuse angle with its apex outermost or toward an end of the supporting frame, and also having spaced groups of bolt-holes arranged at opposite sides of its center and between the said angular groups of cutters, scrapers arranged in lapped relation below the bed plate and between the angular groups of cutters, and bolts removably arranged in fiopies of this patent inay be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the "Commissioner of hunts.

7. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a supporting frame comprising runners, of vertical posts rigidly connected therewith, a bed-plate having handholes formed therein and providedat its corners with notches to receive the posts, adjusting screws carried by the bed-plate and having their lower ends contacting with the runners, and ground treating implements depending from the bedplate.
