GEORGE B. COLLINS, 0F PORTLAND, CONNECTICUT.
BOG-CUTTER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE E. COLLINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bog-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bog cutters, and it has for its object to produce a simple and improved implement of this kind adapted to skim over the surface of the ground for the purpose of clearing the same from noxious growths, such as .are apt to luxuriate in boggy soil and which may also be used for cutting beneath the surface when desired, said implement being provided with a vertical cutter constituting a guide whereby lateral deflection will be avoided.
A further object of the invention is to produce an implement of the class described having a centrally disposed vertical cutter which has a sharp cutting point entering the ground in advance of said surface cutters.
A further object of the invention is to simplify and improve the general construction and arrangement of parts constituting the device. 1
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the in: vention isbetter understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully-described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawings,Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hog cutter constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation. Fig. 4; is a transverse sectional View taken on the line H in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a- Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 13, 1916, Application filed January 24, 1916. Serial No. 73,934.
perspective view of the casting which constitutes the frame or body of the improved devlce.
Corresponding parts in the several figures plate or casting 18 is tapered from the front in a rearward direction, and the front edge I thereof is provided in its upper portion with .an approximately semi-circular recess 21.
The rearward portion, of the'body member 18 is provided on opposite sides withlugs 22 on which thehandles 23 are secured by meansof a transverse bolt 24, said handles being connected together in the customary manner by :means ofrungs 25.
The bottom port-ion of the body member 18 is provided with a longitudinal recess 26 which may extend through the entire length thereof andwhich is for the purpose of receiving a blade or cutter 27 which is secured in position by transverse fastening members,
- such as rivets 28. The lower edge of the blade 27 is coincident with the lower edge of the plate or body member 18, and the upper edge of said blade is coincident with the lowermost wall'portion of the semi-circular recess 21. The blade 27 extends a material distance forwardly of the plate or body member 18, the top and bottom edges of said blade being substantially parallel for the greater portion of the length thereof. The forward end of said blade, howeven'is cut off obliquely to present a sharp point 29 and i a sharp obliquely disposed cutting edge 30, the sand pointcbeing adapted to enter into the ground, and the cutting edge 30 being adapted to cut roots and other obstructions to the progress of the device.
Two surface blades or skimmer blades are employed, the same being designated by 31, each of said blades being provided at its forward end with an upturned flange 32 for the passage of fastening members 33, Whereby the blades are secured on opposite side faces of the blade 30 at a point slightly to the rearward of the obliquely disposed cutting edge 30. The blades 31 diverge rearwardly at opposite sides of the blade 27 and the body plate 18, the rearward ends of the blades 31 being connected with the body plate 18 by means of braces 34.
The forward end portion of the body plate 18 is beveled, as seen at 35, so as to merge with the side faces of the vertical cutting blade 27 and avoid the presenting of abrupt shoulders that might interfere with the progress of the device.
The surface cutting blades 31 are disposed in an approximately horizontal plane, substantially in parallel relation to the plane of the lower edges of the body plate 18 and the blade 27 and at a convenient distance above the lower edges of said body plate and blade.
It will be seen from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, that in practical operation the blade 27 may be utilized for making a shallow incision in the soil, said blade being followed up by the surface cutters 31, it being evident that by proper manipulation of the handles of the implement the surface cutters maybe made to skim over the surface slightly above or at the plane of the surface of the soil, or said surface cutters may be manipulated to out below the surface of the soil, according to the conditions of the bog that is to be cleared. The sharp cutting edge 30 of the blade 27 in making the vertical incision in the soil will divide in two such roots and other obstructions as may be encountered, such obstructions being subsequently sheared off by the horizontally disposed cutting blades 31. It has been found in actual practice that by the use of this implement roots and plants that have resisted extermination by ordinary devices may be successfullv cutand exterminated, leaving the boggy or marshy land in good condition for raising luxuriant crops of hay which, owing to the previous clearing, may be easily and inexpensively harvested.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
1. In a device of the class described, a beam, a vertically disposed body plate secured on the underside thereof, said body plate having a longitudinal recess at' its lower edge and a semi-circular recess at its forward end, and a blade secured in the longitudinal recess with its upper edge coincident with the lower portion of the wall of the semi-circular recess.
2. In a device of the class described, a beam, a vertically disposed body plate secured on the underside thereof, said body plate having a longitudinal recess at its lower edge and a semi-circular recess at its forward end, and a blade secured in the longitudinal recess with its upper edge coincident with the lower portion of the wall of the semi-circular recess, said blade extending materially to the forward of the body plate and being provided at its forward end with an obliquely disposed cutting edge and a sharppoint.
