TELEPHONE SYSTEM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 13, 1916.
Application filed February 27, 1915. Serial No. 11,044.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, FRANK N. REEVES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telephone Systems, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
This invention relates to telephone systems, and particularly to testing circuits for use with automatic finder switches.
The principal object of the invention resides in the provision of circuits of this character which will permit of a desired one of a plurality or group of lines to be selected by means of a switch moving at high speed.
In the drawings a finder switch of the panel type, together with so much of the circuits as is necessary to an understanding of this invention are disclosed.
The switch indicated in the drawing may be substantially the same as that disclosed in Patent No. 1,123,696, although obviously this invention is applicable to any finder switch, the movement of which is controlled by an electromagnet which is maintained continuously energized during the movement of the switch.
The sequence switches shown in the drawings may be and preferably are similar to that disclosed in Patent No. 1,127,808. All the sequence switch contacts which appear to the left of the switch shaft are controlled by the sequence switch adjacent thereto, and all the sequence switch contacts on the opposite side of the switch shaft are controlled by the sequence switch at the right.
The numerals which appear adjacent to the several sequence switch contacts represent the positions of the sequence switch at which the respective contacts are closed, except the numerals which appear adjacent the contacts immediately above each of the sequence switches which represent the positions in which these contacts are opened, and consequently the positions in which the sequence switches may stop.
In the drawing, 1 represents the switch shaft to which is secured a set 2 of brushes which, in the movement of the switch, are arranged to traverse the contacts in the bank 3. The shaft 1 is provided at the lower end thereof with a bar 4 adjacent which is a constantly rotating friction power drum 5. Adjacent the drum 5 but on the opposite side of the bar 4 is an idler pulley 6 by means of which the bar 1- may be forced into operative engagement with the drum 5 upon energization of the clutch magnet 7. Also secured to the shaft 1 is an interrupter brush 8 adapted to traverse the conducting segments on the interrupter 9 upon movement of the shaft. The conduct ing segments and insulating portions of the interrupter 9 are so arranged that the brush 8 is in engagement with a conducting segment at all times except when the brushes of set 2 are centrally positioned on one of the cooperating sets of contacts in the bank 8.
The finder switch in the embodiment of the invention herein disclosed is arranged to associate an operators sending device with a cord circuit when the cord circuit is connected to the line of a calling subscriber. But obviously the test circuit is equally ap plicable to any finder switch whatever.
The operation of the invention is as follows: When the subscriber at substation S removes his receiver from the hook, a signal will be caused to appear in the usual manner adjacent to the jack 10 of the substation line. The operator, observing the signal, will insert the plug 11 in the jack 10, whereupon the cord relay 12 will be energized completing a circuit from battery through the selector sequence switch motor magnet 13, sequence switch contact 14 (1), armature contact of relay 12, to ground. The selector sequence switch thereupon moves to po sition 2. A circuit is now completed from battery through clutch magnet control relay 15, sequence switch contact 16 (1), sequence switch contact 17 (2) to ground. Relay 15 is energized and completes a circuit from battery through cord finder sequence switch motor magnet 18, sequence switch contact 19 (1), contact and armature of relay 15 to ground, whereupon the cord finder sequence switch goes to position 2.
Upon the energization of the relay 15 a holding circuit is completed from battery through the winding of said relay, its lower armature and contact, interrupter 9 and brush 8 to ground, thus insuring that relay 15 will remain energized until the brushes of set 2 become centrally positioned on the first set of contacts.
In position 2 of the cord finder sequence switch, a circuit is completed from battery through clutch magnet 1', sequence switch contact 20 and front contact and armature of relay 15 to ground. The elevating bar a is forced against the rotating drum 5 by the idler pulley 6 and the switch is caused to move upwardly. A circuit new extends from battery through relay 15, sequence switch contact 16 (2), back contact and armature of test relay 21 to ground. The circuit for the test relay 21 extends from battery through the winding of said relay and sequence switch contact to the test brush of the switch. The test contact of the selected cord or connecting circuit will be grounded through sequence switch contact 2st (2). The test contact of the remaining trunks of the group will be without potential.
When the brushes 2 of the finder switch engage the contacts of the selected cord, the circuit for test relay 21 will be completed through the test contact and contact 2i (2), and said relay will pull up opening one branch of the holding circuit for the clutch magnet relay 15. The other branch of the holding circuit for this relay, however, will be maintained through interrupter 9 until the brushes oi' the set 2 are centrally positioned on the contacts of the selected trunk. hen they have reached this position the brush 8 will pass on to an insulating segment of the interrupter 9, and relay 15 will fall oil interrupting the circuit for the clutch magnet '7, thus stopping the movement of the switch. The upper armature of relay 15 at its back contact completes a circuit from battery through the cord finder sequence switch motor magnet 18, sequence switch contact 19 to ground. The cord finder sequence switch thereupon passes to position 3.
hen the cord finder sequence switch goes to position 3, sequence switch contact 25 (3) is closed and completes a circuit from ground through said sequence switch contact, brush 26 and the contact engaged thereby, sequence switch contact 27 sequence switch motor magnet 13 to battery and ground. The selector sequence switch thereupon moves to position 3, thus opening up sequence switch contact 21 and removing the seeking potentialtrom the test contact of the selected cord. In position 3 the sender, which is diagrammatically illustrated in the drawing, is also connected to the cord through the finder brushes 28, 29, the contacts engaged thereby, and sequence switch contacts 30 and 31 By means of the sender the automatic switches used to build up the talking connection may be operated, and when the sender has completed its operation it will be removed from operative relation to the cord in the usual manner.
