INVENTOR WITNESSES bodying my invention, the numeral 2 vdesigthe bottom; and 3 the integral arched-top.
s as PATENT v OFFICE.
LUTHER L. KNOX, OF AVALON, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO KNOX PRESSCEDKC WELDED STEEL COMPANY, OF PITTSB OF PENNSYLVANIA.
I ANNEALING-IBOX.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LUTHER L. KNox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Avalon,
in the county'of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Annealing-Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in wh'ich Figure l is a top plan view partly broken away of an annealing box embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a front elevation; Fig. 3 is a transverse section; Fig; 4 is a plan view showing one form of blank which may be employed in making the box, the successive steps of the drawing operation being indicated in dotted lines; and Fig. 5 1s a sectional view of the blank and also indicating in dotted lines the successive drawing steps.
My'invention'has relation to annealing boxes, and is designed to provide a one-piece sheet metal annealing box which is entirely free from seams and joints. Also to provide a box of this character in whichorovision is made for expansion and contraction movements. My invention also provides a light and durable box. 1
I11 the accompanying drawings, in which.
I have shown the preferred form of box emnates the body of the boxwhich is open at The box is, in. general, of the usual oblong form, but is-provided at each of its corner portions with an outward swell or bend 4,
extending beyond the general planes of the sides and ends of the box.
5 designates lifting lugs which are. secured preferably by welding to opposite sides of j the box;
The box is made from a single'integral sheet of metal by successive drawing operations. I preferably start with a blank 6 of the general form shown in Fig. 4. In the first drawing'or shaping step, the box is given the general oval shallow form indi cated at 7' in dotted lines in Figs. 4 ai'id 5.
-In the next forming step, it isgiven the v deeper and generally oblong rectangular form shown at S, in said figures. In the next step, the sides and ends of the box are Specification of Letters Patent.
compressed, and the outwardly bulged corner portions 4 are formed. j Itv will be noted bykreference to Fig. 4
Patented June 13, 1916. Application filed April 17, 1915. Serial No. 22,079. I
URGH, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION;
that those portions of the blank which are to form the corner portions of the finished box are cut away, as indicated at 9 in Fig. l, so as to prevent excess of metal at the corners. The upward bulges or'swells at the corners provide more or less flexible portions which will take up the expansion and contraction of the box in use, and prevent its giving way as a result of strains due to expansion and contraction. The bulges also permit the'box to be more readily placed in position over a pile of plates or sheets. The bulged corner portions also provide for taking up-the ex-.
cess of metal at the corners, as otherwise in forming a box with corners from a's ngle plate or sheet, the metal would necessarily v be lapped or folded at the corners.
.My invention provides a one-piece box which is entirely free from joints'and seams and which is much lighter and less likely to become broken or cracked in service than the usual cast box. other weak points to give way in service, and all sharp corners or. angles are avoided. I do not, however, limit myself to the exact form of box which have shown and described, as this may be clianged,-witl iout departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in the appended claims.
-' I. claim:
1. An integral one-piece annealing box of generally rectangular form, die-formed to shape without joints or seams from asingle piece of wrought metal, the excess metal at the corners being formed into outward swells or bulges, substantially as described.
There are no' rivets or 2. An integral one-piece annealing box of l I v 3. An integralone-piece annealing box of generally rectangular form, die formed to sha'pewithout joints or seams from a single piece of wrought metal, the excess metal at the corners being formed into outward swellsor bulges, and lifting lugs welded to walls of said box between the corner bulges, it the side walls of said box, substantially as substantially as described.
described. t In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set 4. A11 integral one-piece annealing box of my hand. 5 generally rectangular form, die formed to LUTHER L KNOX shapewithout jolnts or seams from a single piece of Wrought metal,' the excess metal at Witnesses:
the corners being formed into outward swells GEO. B. BLEMING, or bulges, and lifting lugs welded to the side W. C. LYON.
