Be it known that I, Mouais KURTZON, a citizen of the United States,`iesiding at Chicago, in the county of Cook and` State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Push- Button Latches yand Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to push button latches and more particularly the type employed on cabinet doors, drawers and the like, although after an understanding of the construction is had it will be obvious to others skilled in the art to which it pertains that the principle thereof may be well adapted to latches for other styles of doors, windows, gates, etc.
The primary object of my invention is to construct a novel easily operated, and effective latch and to provide the same with means whereby it may be locked, the former structure operated by a push button and the latter by a removable `key inserted in said pu shA button.
Another object is to construct the device in yas simple a manneras possible in order to reduce the cost of manufacture to a minimum and at the same timeprevent the latch getting out of order. Y
Other objects will be obvious from the following description wherein I have described a preferred form of latch and lock, the construction of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification.
In the drawing similar reference characters indicate the same parts in the various figures. j
Figure l is a vertical sectional view of my improved push-button latch and lock taken centrally of the button and showing the button pushed inward. Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof taken at right angles to Fig. l to better illustrate the construction of the locking mechanism.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a suitable box-like housing or casing that incloses the mechanism of the latch, one of the walls whereof is removed and the opening formed thereby closed by a suitable plate B provided with lateral tubular embossment or barrel C. This embossment is of a length sufficient to extend through the panel, stile or other strip of material to which the latch may be` secured in any suitable manner. A. pawl or latch 5 of substantially triangular shape is pivotally mountedy suitable lug 9 projecting laterally fromV saidA latch, the action of which spring being to Vkeep the latch normally pressed outwardly thro-ugh slot 7 asseen in Fig. l of the drawings. The body of the latch is preferably slotted longitudinally to form bifurcations l0 and said bifurcations are connected by a suitable cross-pin ll passing transversely through them.
Pivotally mounted upon a transverse pin l2 extending across the casing is a suitable sickle-shaped lever l3 the curved arm of which passes between the bifurcations in the latch-body and normally bears against the cross-pin ll so that the rocking of saidk lever will drawV or move the latch into the casing as shown in Fig. l of the drawings.y The opposite end of said lever is preferably deflected at a slight angle to said sickleshaped arm and has pivoted to its outer end a suitable socket let the bifurcated rear portion of which straddles said lever and is secured thereto by a pin l5. In order to actuate lever 13 a suitable plunger 16 is mounted in the barrel C of the front plate. The inner end of this plunger is provided with a substantially arrow-shaped head 17 that is adapted to be seated in the socket 14 on the operating lever while its outer end is preferably reduced in diameter to form a push-button 18 that passes through the restricted opening Vin the outer end of the barrel, which opening is formed by bending the end` edge of said barrel inwardly to form an internal annular flange 19. Thus, it will be'apparent that when the pushbutton end of the plunger is moved inwardly the arrow-head inner end seated in socket 14 ,will move lever 13 upon its fulcrum and 'cause/the latch body to be withdrawn or moved into the casing until its inclined surface lies flush with the adjacent surface of the casing.
In order to lock the latch and prevent its being operated by the push-button plunger I prefer to cut a key-slot 20 longitudinally in said plunger into which a suitable recessed ort'umbler key is adapted to be inserted. A portion of the shank of the key is adapted to engage a slide plate 22 that is irregular shaped and provided with. longi- Vitiidinally alining slots 23 and 24into fivhich project short pins 25 and26 arising from an offset shelf a of the casing in order to guideV the longitudinal movement of'vsaid plate. VAn arc-shaped recess 27 is made in the edgeof the plateradjacent the key that has a lateral offset 2S adapted to be engaged by the key-so as to move the plate to the position indicatedY in dotted lines in Fig. 2 of in'order to keep said locking plate normallyv pressed in this direction I interpose a suitable spring 30 between its edge and the ad- ]acent Wall of the casing, one end of said spring entering a slot 31 cut in the edge ofV i said plate'substantially as shown. One edge of thelocking plate has irregularly curved recess 32 formedthereininto Whicha pin or Ylug 33 rising from the face of the slide plate projects Vfor this` purpose -to retain said locking plate in a position removed from or out of the path of theY latch, and which, when said slideV plate 22 Vis 'moved longitudinally by thefshank of the key, is adapted to be movedout of'saidrecess and'thus permit the locking plate 29 to swing upon its pivot until its corner edge has moved into the path of said latch and prevent the vmovement ofthe latter. I have found itV desirable to make an inclined or Wedge-shaped engaging surface or edge '34 on the locking plate at one side of recess 32so that when the slide plate is moved to unlock the upper or locking plate 29 the pin 33 will be readily guided to said recess by moving said lock- "ingplate'laterally out'V of thepath of the latch; Y Y

Vhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A latch comprising a pivoted latch member and means for actuating the same consisting of a lever one end of Which engages said latch member, a socket carried by said lever, and a plunger the inner end of which seats .in said socket.
