ANIMAL-MOUNT FOR CAROUSELS.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WVILHELM F. Jan- NECKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Tonawanda, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Animal-Mount for Carousels, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an improved mounting for the animal, or other figure, which is used on carousels, and has for an object to provide aconnection or mounting which may be quickly assembled and quickly separated, and which when assembled provides for an interlocked joint, which cannot be accidentally released, and which admits of the noiseless rocking or oscillating movement of the parts, as the animal is moved back and forth in the usual manner.
The invention has for another object the provision of a mounting of this character between the standard which carries the animal, or other figure, and the platform, so as to anchor the standard to the platform, and at the same time admit of the free vertical movement of the standard, and the free rocking or oscillation of the standard without undue wear upon the parts and without liability of disconnecting the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a connection, the parts of which are not only housed, but are also completely covered, and which are of such peculiar form and arrangement as to admit of the formation thereof of considerable thickness, and size, to amply hold the animal, or other figure, from accidental displacement during the operation of the carousel.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be more particularly pointed out in the following specific description of the present preferred embodiment of this invention, the same being disclosed in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a vertical central sectional view, taken through the lower end of a standard, and theimproved mount or connection between the standard and the platform, the lower side of the animal or figure being shown fragmentarily in its relative position on the standard. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the mount or connection, taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1, and looking downwardly in the direction of the arrow, the dotted lines showing the contour and position of the base plate beneath the platform. Referring to this drawing, wherein like parts are designated by similar characters of reference throughout the several views, 10 designates the animal, or other figure, which is supported by the improved mount or con nection of this invention. The figure 10 is secured to an outer tubing .11 into which telescopes an inner tube 12. The lower end of the standard thus formed is protected or ncased in a cylindrical casing 13, which incloses the lower extremity of the outer tube 11 to prevent contact of clothing, hands, and the like. with the movable tube.
The platform 14 of the carousel is provided immediately beneath the figure 10 with an opening through which upwardly eritends a socket ring 15 held from upward displacement by a base flange 16 adapted to seat flat against the lower side of the platform 1 1. The base flange 16 is secured to the platform in any suitable manner, such as by bolts 17 countersunk in the upper face of the platform and extending downwardly through the base plate. This socket ring 15, as may be best seen from Figs. 1, 3 and 4, is provided, in its diametrically opposite sides, with inwardly extending lugs 18 having lower rounded or semi-cylindrical faces constituting trunnions or journals. A cap plate 19 is provided with an outstanding flange 20 adapted to seat against the lower 1 edge of the socket ring 15 and is seated in a depression 21 formed in the lower face of the base flange 16, so as to center the cap 19 beneath the socket ring 15, and hold the cap in place. The cap 19 carries therein a coiled spring 22 resting at one end-in the bottom of the cap 19 and bearing at its upper end against a follower plate 23, in the form of a washer, which is free to move vertically in the socket ring 15, and which is also capable of a slight oscillation in the ring. To prevent the binding of the parts under the compression of air in the'mount or connection, the cap plate 19 is provided in its bottom, with an opening 2 1, and the follower plate 23 is provided at its central portion with an opening 25. Screws 26, or the like, pass upwardly through the flange and into the base plate 16 to hold the cap plate 19 against the socket ring 15.
, A connecting nipple 27 is internally threaded at its upper end to receive therein the lower externally threaded extremity of the telescoping tube 12 of the standard. The upper end of the nipple 27 is the larger end thereof, and is provided with a smooth cylindrical peripheral surface, and has formedthereon. at the lower end of the surface an outstanding bead or flange 28 con stituting a supporting shoulder upon which seats the'lower end of the cylindrical casing 13," which latter also snugly embraces the periphery of the upper end of the nipple- 27. The lower end of the nipple27 is re duced for passage into the upper end of the socket ring 15, between the lugtrunnions 18. The lower end of the nipple has an outstanding annular flange 29, of a diameter to somewhat closely fit the interior of the socket ring 15. This flange 29 has, atdiametrically opposed points, vertical slots 30 extending therefrom and being of a Width toreceive the lug trunnions 18 therethrough as the lower end of the nipple is inserted into the top of the socket ring At points intermediate the slots 30, the flange 29 is provided with diametrically opposed concavities or recesses 31 in the upper face of the flange. The bottoms of the recesses or concavities 31 extend down to a point substantially half the thickness of the flange, soas to provide for ample support at the bottomof the recess for anchoring the nipple in the socket ring. These recesses 31 are adapted to receive therein the lower cylindrical portions of the trunnions 18, and,.as shown in Fig. 2, the recesses 31 are so dished out orconcaved as to loosely receive the trunnions 18 therein, and admit of the free rocking of the flange upon the trunnions as a pivotal support. The follower plate 23 bears'against the lower end of the nipple 27, and the spring 22 is of such strength or tension as to force the nipple 27 upwardly and hold the flange 29 against the trunnions 18 and prevent the accidental dislodgment of the standard from the platform.
In assembling the parts, it is only necessary to turn the nipple 27 until the slots 30 in the flange 29 register with the lug trunnions 18 projecting inwardly from the {wall of the socket ring 15. The follower plate 23 bears against the lower sides of the trunnions 18 when-the nipple is removed "from the socket, so that the spring and its trunnions 18 in the, recesses 31. A rocking movement of the animal, or other device 10, mounted on the standard is permitted as the nipple 27 pivots upon the trunnions 18, and the outer tube 11 is permitted to slide vertically upon the inner tube 12. Thus, a
noiseless rocking connection is formed for the lower end of the standard, and a construction is provided which admits of the quick separation of the parts, and which at the same time, when assembled, securely holds the parts in interlocked relation.
It is, of course, understood thatvarious changes and modifications may be made in the details of the above described construction, without departing from the spirit of the invention, and being restricted only by the scope of the following claims.
Whatis claimed is 1. In combination with a standard, a protecting casing surrounding the, standard," and a platform, a socket ring seated in the platform'a'nd having opposed inwardly extending lug trunnions, a spring in the lower end of said socket ring, and a nipple secured 'to the lower end of said standard and adapted to support the lower end of said casing, said nipple being reduced at its lower end for engagement in the upper end of said socket ring between said trunnions and having an annular flange provided with vertical slots adapted to register withthe trun-, nions to admit the insertion of the nipple in the socket ring, said flange of the nipple also having concaved recesses in its upper face adapted to register withthe trunnions upon the partial rotation of the nipple, said spring being adapted to raise said nipple to seat said trunnions in said recesses.

cylindricalouter surface at its upper end, a casing engaging about the lower end ofsaid tubesand'fitting snugly over the upper end of said nipple, said nipplehaving an annu- 'lar bead at the lower end of said smooth surface to receive and support the lower end of said casing, a socket adapted for securement to the platform of a carousel and adapted to receive in its upper end the lower end of said nipple, opposed trunnions carried in the upper end of the socket, an outstanding flange carried upon the lower end of the nipple and having slots therein for the reception of said trunnions during the insertion of the nipple in the socket, said flange having concaved recesses in its upper face adapted to register with said trunnions upon the partial rotation of the nipple in the socket, and means urging the nipple upwardly in the socket for holding the trunnions in said recesses and adapted to admit the free rocking movement of the nipple in the socket.

5. In an animal mount for carousels, a fixed socket having opposed inwardly extending lugs, a nipple for insertion in the engagement beneath said lugs, and a spring pressed follower closing the upper end of the socket and adapted to bear against the nipple to force the same upwardly and hold the flange against the lugs.
