QUILLING-MACHIN E.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 13, rare.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE ADsrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Quilling-Machines, of which the following is a specification. v
In Letters Patent No. 1,063,235 I have set forth a'cop winding mechanism designed especially for the winding of cops and the like having conical ends in which the thread guiding portion of a thread-guide and a carrier for the thread-guide are pivoted on axes crossing the axis of winding, whereby said thread-guide portion (shown in the form of a split blade), as the thread-guide .was moved back and forth with the oscillating carrier, would remain in a definiterelation (parallel) to the axis of winding; and in which, further, the thread-guide was itself pivoted in the carrier on an axis crossing the latters axis of movement, whereby as the building of, the cop progressed and the gradually augmented package moved the thread-guide on its pivot in the carrier-and hence toward the latters axis of movement the stroke of the thread-guide portion of said threadguide would be gradually reduced, thus forming conical ends on the package.
The object of the present invention is to provide a winding mechanism of a type similar to that above referred to yetpossessing certain structural and functional advantages thereover. To this end, instead of pivoting the carrier in some fixed part of the frame of the machine, in the present case it is arranged to rock on an axis crossing the axis of winding in a suitable supporting member movable back and forth, the rocking thereof (required for gradually reducing the stroke of the thread-guide in the way to be explained) being accomplished by any suitable means, as by its being pivotally connected with a part of the support in which said member moves.
In the accompanying, drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of so much of a quilling machine constructed in accordance with this invention as is necessary for the purposes of this description; Fig. 2 is a plan of what appears in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a left-side view of the thread-controlling mechanism; Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken through the axis of rocking movement of the carrier; Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8 are detail views of the carrier, slide and thread-guide; and, Fig. 9 shows the carrier and the thread-guiding blade 8 in their relative positions at one end of the stroke thereof and the manner in which the detents 2 act to prevent tilting of said blade at this time.
The frame a; spindle b journaled therein and the means for rotating the same; the support ofor the spring-pressed plunger (Z which coacts with the spindle to support the pun A driven by said spindle; and the bracket 6 are or may be all substantially the same as in my patent aforesaid, excepting that in the present instance said bracket includes a pair of guide-rods 7 arranged parallel with the winding axis. On these guide-rods as a support is arranged the slide or cross-head 'g affording a member to support and having an enlarged cylindrical bearingportion h in which is arranged to rock the cylindrical portion i of the carrier confined in said bearing portion by an upwardly projecting arm j and a disk is which bear against opposite ends of said bearing portion, the arm being preferably integral with said bearing portion and the disk secured thereto by screws Z. The arm has a sliding connection with some fixed part, as the screw m tapped into one of several vertically arranged holes 11. in bracket 6 preferably perpendicularly above the midposition of the slide in its travel on the guide-rods, the screw being provided with a wearing piece o-received in a slot p extending longitudinally of said arm.
The thread-guide means includes an arm g which is fulcrumed in the cylindrical portion of the carrier on an axisa pin r which is at right angles to that of the carrier and, as here shown, horizontal when the slide and carrier are in their mid-position, the arm 7' projecting vertically. Said means further includes a thread-guide proper comprising'a split blade 8, a threadguiding eyelet t suitably fixed over the blade and an axial support a for the blade journaled in the arm 9 on an axis at right angles to pin 7- and having a fixed head 4) at one end, to which the blade may be soldered,
and a removable collar w at the other, said head and collar confining said support it against endwise movement. To accommodate the arm which extends through the cylindrical portion of the carrier, the disk is is provided with a slot is.
g is a spring connecting screws 9 of the arm 9 and carrier '2' and normally holding the blade end of the thread-guide down.
w is a bent wire suitably secured to the slide 9 and affording a rest which malntains the blade of the thread-guide elevated when these is no pirn in place.
The forward end of arm 9 is provided with a head 3 extended laterally in both directions and having downwardly converging faces from which project the adjustable detents z in the form of screws, the
same being adapted to contact with the top surface of the blade in the oscillation there of for a purpose to be explained. Between the heads of the screws and the head y springs e are coiled about the screws, serving to lock the latter against turning when adjusted.
For supporting the thread-guide elevated when not in use I provide the spring loop 2 secured to a suitable part of the carrier (for instance, disk is) and the hook 3, the latter being formed on the arm 9 and adapted, when arm g is sufliciently raised, to snap over the loop and hold the arm elevated.
, guide with consequent gradual shortening The slide is reciprocated through the medium of the hook 4 from the oscillating arm 5 and, the spindle and pirn being rotated, during thejprogress of the winding the thread is formed around the pirn in a succession of layers of coils. As the winding proceeds the package gradually elevates the guide, whose blade 3 rests thereon, remaining substantially horizontal at all times and oscillating in the arm g on an axis at right angles to the axis of winding.
This produces a gradual shortening of the stroke of the thread guiding portion of the thread-guide, and consequently of the layers of windings, because the thread guiding portion of the thread-guide, with the axis of the latter tilted, stands less advanced at the end of the stroke when the thread-guide has been elevated than when it is depressed. In other words, with reference to any point on the slide to which the thread guiding portion of the thread-guide would be opposite at the mid-position of the slide, the more the thread-guide is elevated the more as it moves from mid-position to right or left and becomes at the same time tilted will its thread guiding portion fall behind said point. The gradual reducing of the stroke of the thread guiding portion of the threadof the layers'ofthe coils in the package, of
course results in the latter being formed with conical ends.
By altering the position of the screw m in the holes 71. the degree of taper of the ends of the package may be varied, as will be obvious, because thereby the angle of tilting of the axis of the thread-guide at the ends of the stroke is changed. I
The detents 2 serve to maintain the blade 8 against tilting into parallelism with the surface of the cone of the package when at each end ofthe package. They should be so adjusted that each will just contact with the blade when the latter is at the end of the stroke (Fig. 9), such adjustment being of course necessary whenever t'helength of the stroke is changed to change the length of the cops being wound. I
The peculiar construction and arrangement of the parts including the rods -f and the cylindrical bearing portions 71., i, with the thread-guide partly housed in the latter, obviously promote compactness, simplicity of construction, the reduction of lost motion and a material postponement of wear with lost-motion as a consequence,q ualities which are important in a mechanism of this character where space is limited and high speed without sacrifice of regularity compactness in the windings is desir- Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to se-.
