JAMES NEILL, OF ORANGE, NEW JERSEY.
BAND-SAW- GUARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 13, 1916.
Application filed November 5, 1914. Serial No. 870,881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMns NEILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and use- :t'ul Improvements in Band-Saw Guards, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in band saw guards and the leading object is the provision of a guard which will be compact, simple, and inexpensive of construction.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a device of this character which can be attached and removed with ease and which will absolutely protect the person from contact with the saw, and thus avoid serious injury.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a guard which will be capable of instant application and adjustment, which will not occupy much space or interfere with the travel of the saw, and which will be thoroughly efficient and practical in every respect.
With these objects in view my invention consists of a band saw guard consisting of an attaching member and a saw guide and guard, and further consists of a device of this character embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts substantially as disclosed herein.
In order that the detailed construction and mode of using my device may be fully understood and its many advantages be appreciated, I have shown in the accompanying drawings a band saw guard embodying my invention.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a suilicient portion of a band saw with my guard in position for use. Fig. 2 represents a plan view of the attaching bracket or member of my device. Fig. 3 represents an edge or end elevation of the attaching member. Fig. 4 represents an elevation taken at a right angle to Fig. 1 of the guard and other mechanism in connection with which the guard is used. Figs. 5 and 6 represent a side and end view, respectively of the guard member of my device.
In the drawing: The letter A designates one of the band saw wheels, B the saw, C, the work table or support, D the guide carrying arm, provided with the saw guiding roller E, and F, the guide supporting lateral arm, all of which parts are of well known construction and need no further elaboration herein, but in connection with which my guard is employed.
The guard is of extremely simple c011- struction and consists of the member G, in the form of a vertical strip provided with a saw guiding slit or passage H, and at its lower end having attached thereto and opposite said slit a plate J, carrying a stud K, formed with a channel or slot L, in one side. The stud fits in the sleeve or collar M, having mounted therein the adjusting screw N, adapted to clamp in said slot L, and provided with an operating handle or head 0. Formed integral with said sleeve is the clamp for connecting the guard which consists of the stationary member P. and the adjustable and detachable member P, which members are formed with recesses to provide the receiving opening Q, and are clamped upon the guide D, by means of the pair of binding screws R, as will be readily understood. The receiving opening in the clamping head is made of a peculiar shape to adapt it to fit and be clamped upon guides of angular or circular shape, as circumstances require.
It will thus be seen that broadly speaking the guard comprises only two parts or members, a saw guiding member and an attach ing member. and that the saw guard is capable of adjustment with reference to the attaching member and that the attaching member may be adjusted upon the guide and that from every point of view the invention is eflicient and practical and can be produced at the lowest possible cost.
In a band saw guard, the combination with the saw and guiding means, of a two part clamp adjustable vertically upon the guide having an opening to receive said guide, a pair of clamping screws in said clamp, an arm on one member of said clamp, a sleeve formed on said arm, a binding screw in said sleeve, and a guard consisting of a vertical strip having a saw guiding slit in one side, a plate secured to the lower end of copies of this patent may be obtained for said strip opposite said slit, and a stud on said plate to engage said sleeve.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Wlmngton, D. G. e
