Description

PATENT OFFICE.
ADAM MOLTZ, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,631, dated August 29, 1871.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM MoLTz, ofthe city, county and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists in a peculiar feed-movement composed of a 0am on the end of the rocker-shaft which actuates a lever, which in turn actua-tes the serrated feed bar, by means of which the feed-bar is made to rise slowly and drop quickly, is easily adjusted to the height and length of stitch, and, being operated by the rocker-shaft, its movements are uniform with the shuttle-carrier, and the machine itself adapted to heavy as well as light work, as I will further explain by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure lis a top view of a portion of a sewingmaehine with my invention applied to it, Fig. 2, an end view, showing feed-movement; and Fig. 3, a transverse section, showing shuttle-movement.
In the said drawing, A indicates the table of a sewing-machine; B B, bearings cast on said table for sustaining the rocker-shaft; C, an arm also cast on the said table for sustaining the shuttlc-carrier an d feed mechanism, and D is the rocker-shaft. E is a cam on the end of the rockershaft, which plays against the lower end of a lever, F, said lever having its fulerum at G, while at its upper end the lever is connected with the serrated feed-bar H (see Fig. 2) by a pivot, I, and the lever is also connected with a draw-spring, K, at its upper end, which draws the lever and feed-bar back after they are pushed forward by the cam E. L is the feed-bar elevator and depresser, provided with a slot, M, a guide, N, and a roller, O. This bar L is attached to the feedbar at I), and is operated by the cam E in raising and dropping the feed, while the lever pushes the feed-bar back and forth. R is the shuttlecarrier attached at its lower end S to the arm C by a pivot S, and having at its upper end the shuttle-bed T. This carrier is actuated by an arm, U, on the rocker-shaft, and swings on its pivot S back and forth, carrying the shuttle in a segment of a circle and away from the needle at the times of its ascent and descent.
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The elevator and depresser L, in combination with the cams E E, lever F, feed-bar H, and spring K, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature this day of May, 1871.
. ADAM MOLTZ.
