EDWARD BIG'NELL, 0F LINCOLN, NEBRASKA.
PILE.
Application filed July 13, 1914.
Tp all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD BIGNELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of ebraska, have invented certain new and use; 111 Improvements in Piles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to subsurface structures, such as piles, sheet piling, or caissons, and more particularly to a structure comprising means for delivering jets of water in advance thereof to form an excavation, into which the structure may sink, and along the sides of the structure to step displaced material upwardly along the sides thereof, and thereby not only lubricate the sides, but also remove the material displaced by the excavating jet.
It is the object of the present invention to provide improved details of structure for supplying and delivering the excavating and stepping jets, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure I is an elevation of a concrete pile containing my improvements. Fig. II is an enlarged central, longitudinal section of the pile. Fig. III is a transverse section on the line IIIIII, Fig. II, but indicating the embedded tubes 33 in full lines. Fig. IV is an enlarged detail perspective of one of the side nozzle sockets. Fig. V is a detail perspective of one of the preferred form of side nozzles. Fig. VI is a cross-section of a portion of the pile, *b'n the line VIV- I, Fig. -II, showing the hoist link.
Referring more in detail to parts :1 designates a concrete pile, having a central longitudinal channel 2, formed by molding the concrete over a form, preferably consistingof a middle section 4, of relatively thin sheet iron and end sections 5 of metal tubing; the intermediate sheet metal section having its ends overlapping the metal tube in order to form a close joint. By providing a thin sheet metal core section a less expensive structure is provided and the core is rendered practically as efficient as though Specification of Letters Patent.

the tubing were extended entirely through the piling.
The upper tube section 5 extends beyond the upper end of the pile and carries a fitting 7, preferably of the construction hereinafter described, and connected with a laterally directed conduit 8 through which wator for the side jets may be supplied. Projecting through the fitting 7 is a pipe 1.2, which extends into and through the interior of the tube 5; the diameter of the pipe being sufficiently less than that of the tubing to provide an annular space 13 therebetween.
The lower tubing section 5 terminates at or within the lower end of the pile, and mounted'on the lower end of the fitting (preferably by screw threads) is a reduction fitting 16, having a head 17, for receiving the tubing section, and a tapered lower end 18 forming a nozzle, the end of which terminates flush with the bottom of the pile, and the channel 19 of which converges to ward the outlet to restrict the flow and thereby increase the force of the jet.
The fitting 16 is preferably provided with outstanding ribs 20 at various points throughout its length, to reinforce the head and anchor the same in the concrete.
The interior of the nozzle end 18 is tapered, and threaded onto the lower end of the inside pipe 12 is a tapered plug 21, having an anchor groove 22 carrying a packing ring 23 for closely engaging the inner surface of the nozzle when the inside pipe is forced downwardly within the pile, so that when the plug is seated in the nozzle, Water delivered into the outer tubing, through conduit 8, is confined within the head of the fitting and does not mingl -with water that is delivered through the .nner pipe 12 to the nozzle 18.
VVith this construction, it is possible to deliver separate volumes of water under different pressures to the excavating and stepping nozzles, and b providing. the nozzle with a restricted out t, the force of the excavating jet is increased.
The sheet metal core 4 and tubing 5 are 33 are nozzle tips 36, having, upwardly directed and tlared outer ends 37 lying close to the outer surtace of the pile; the nozzles being: preterahlv formed of street Ls, or the like, with the free ends curved to provide the flared or rectangular months 38, and enable them to lie flat against the surface tin-re t h n the surtace of the pile is convex (as shown in the present drawings).
In order to provide an etl'ective sealed connection hetw ecu the high and low pressure c nduits 12. 'l and 5. and seat the high pressure pipe 12 in its nozzle. I thread a collar l0 onto the upper end of the inside pipe 12, so that when the parts are in place the collar will seat in the fitting 7 above the line of tlow from the supply pipe 8 to the large conduit in the pile. and thread a section of pipe 42 into the upper end of the collar 40, so that the. upper end of said section may project above the fitting T to carry the high pressure supply pipe 4?. A gland 15 is slidahly mounted on the connecting pipe section "l2. and adapted t thread into the upper end ot the, tittin; 7. so that it may seal the fitting and engage th top of collar to to force the inside or high pressure pipe downwardly. in the pile and seat the plug. 21: a packing ring -lt3 being loe. l hetween the top of collar 40 and bottom of gland to seal the connection at that point.
As a coinenient m mus for connecting a grab or tackle with the pile when the latter is to he handled. I provide the same with a link 45% which is emheddeddn the pile adjaent th upper end thereot and pret'erahly rraneed vertically. so that the projecting ends lil torm horizmitallv opening apertures thr ugh which a. chain, or the like, (not show max he. extended to attach the pile to a italile hoist.
it apparent that with this construction, when the epar:1t:e inner and outer conduits oi" the l-lit." represented by the. sheet-iron ind mam actions t 5. and by the interior pipe iZOl'ltlLCtCl with scl'iarate sou u oil water upply and the pile is lowt'l'ttl to the place where it to he sunk, wa- {or inn 1th ranc k 'l'he pri i i-1 dc!- tuloet id annel ill will evcavato in ad oile.
from the outer conduit, comc llt t metal and tubing sections. l'orci 'ilv through the transverse -mvardly tron; the flaring nozzles, so th: the displaced material lifted from the m tion lrv the terminal nozzle is carried aux-iv lay the upwardly directed ictrot' 'Wtfttl delivered fr m the side nozzles and stepped upwardlv along the pile to the surface of the ground.
"the terminal nozzle herein described is adapted "or e'acavatingr in advance of the pile an I :h liiit'til side nozzles are adapted to; d ivcring relatively wide, thin jets,
-; lrom the bottom of the pile which feed films of water along the sides of the pile to lubricate the same. and being under pressure. have sutiicient toree to lift displaced material from one let to another and step the same upw ardlv alone the surface of the pile. until it is delivered nto the surface of the ground through which the pile is sunk.
llv forming: the central portion of the core of the pile of relatively thin sheet metal. the expense of the core is reduced, and by providing the sockets in the outer faces of the piling. the transverse tubes 32 mav terminate within the surface of the pile and he provided with screw threads with which the threads on the side nozzles may cooperate to removahly mount the side nozzles on said tubes.
As the length of the pile is determined prior to its placement. the pipes may he cut to proper length for arranging the nozzle tlzlnjles and connecting collars to properly seat the parts. and by providing the ll()i t, links I adapt the structure for easy and quick connection with (ilisconnection from the hoisting device.
It is apparent that by connecting the upper fitting with the pile as deserihed, the fitting and pipe l2 may be removed when a pile is sunk. so thatv it may he used repeat tall and thereby elt'ect a saving in the equipment.
Having thus descrlhed my invention. What) I claim as new therein. and desire. to secure h v l a-tters-latent, is: 4
