This invention relates to a new and useful road grading machine and ditcher.
An object of this invention is to improve the construction of the road grading machine set forth, shown in the drawings, and claimed vin theapp-lication lof W. R; William's, Serial No. 4,207, filed January 25,
. 1915, and vallowed July 20, 1915, by providing improved means for adjusting the cutting blade, in order to increase or decrease the cutting action of the blade.
A further object of the invention is the provision. of` a pair of beams angular'ln cross section, to which the cutting blade is adjustably connected.
In practical lfields the details yof construc-I tion may necessitate alterations, falling -within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in thedrawings and claimed.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 30, 1916.
Application filed September 16, 1915. Serial No. 50,992.
Referring more especially to the drawing, 1 designates the runner, which is constructally extending platform 4, there being angular straps 5 secured at 6 to the upper and lower surfaces of the platform, and at 7 to the beams 2 and 3, thereby securing the platform to the beams, and at the same time holding the beams relative to each other. Secured between the rear parts of the beams 2'an`d 3 as at 8 is a plate 9 having a laterally extending threaded projection 10, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. Journaled upon the projection 10 is a supporting and cutting disk 11,` which is held upon the projection by the nut l2. A metal strap or plate 13, which is bent upon itself, as shown at 14, has its opposite sides secured at 16 to the forward adjacent ends o-f the beams 2 and 3, thereby holding the forward ends of the beams firm and rigid. Arranged laterally and extending rearwardly is a holder for a cutting blade comprisinga pair of beams 17 and 18, which have their forward ends held rigid relative to each other bythe opposite sides 19 of the plate 20, which opposite sides are secured at 21 to the beams 17 and 18. The plate is bent upon itself as shown at 22, in order to provide the opposite sides 19.
Where the plate 20 is bent upon itself, it is restricted or contracted, in order to lit the opening 23-of the plate 13, there being a pivot pin 24 passing vertically through the looped or folded or bent parts of said plates, in order to hingedly connect them. Also are the ears 25 of the bracket plate 26, and pivoted swivelly at 27 to the bracket plate is alooped member 28, which may swivel upon the pivot 27, whereas the bracket plate 26 may pivot horizontally upon the pin 24. The forward end ofthe looped member 28 has a hook 29, to which a suitable equalizer or evener may be connected for pulling theapparatus. A bolt 30 extends transversely of the looped member 28, and is secured by the nuts 31 and 32, and upon one end of theed of two beams 2 and 3 angular in cross i pivotally mounted upon the pivotl pin 24 bolt, a supporting ,and cutting'disk 33 is journaled, whichydisk and the disk 11 constitutes means for supporting the beams 2 and 3, as the apparatus is pulled over the road.

and-after the blade is once adjusted, the nuts 44 may be tightened, thereby not only holding the parts together, but also hold the beams 17 and 18 relative to each other.
Secured at 50 between the lateral Hanges of the beams 17 and 18 is a lateral projection 51 of a' segmental rackor quadrant 52, and secured on a threaded stud 53 (which `is arranged centrally of the rack or quadrant) bymeans of a nut 54 is a lever 55. This lever 55 is provided with a dog 56, which is under the tension of the spring 57, and is connected in the usual manner with a hand grip 58, so that the dog may be manipulated to engage any one 'of the notches59 of the rack or quadrant, to hold the lever in adjusted position. Une end of the lever 55 has an angular and downwardly and rearwardly extending part 60, to which a forked `member 61 is swiveled in anyfsuitable manner as shown at 62, which forked member carries a wheel 63, designed to travel upon the ground or road as ythe machine vor apparatus travels thereover.
It is to be observed that by raising the Piv-v otedat45 lbetween the lateral flanges ofthe i,isaaas lever 55 in the manner shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, the wheel 63 is thrown down- Wardly, thereby raising the beams 17 and 18 and the cutting blade, so that the cutting blade will pass over a stone or other obstacle or obstruction.
c It is to be observed that the cutting blade 36'has upper and lower cutting edges. 64 and 65, in which case the blade may be inverted, by removing the nutk 44, and re-connec'ting the blade. However, the beams may be thrown to the left or upon the right of the vvbeams 2 and 3, in which case the beams 2 and 3 will swivel axially, with relation to the looped member 28. When disposing the beams 17 and 18 upon the opposite sides of the beams 2 and 3, the dog 56 may engage the notches 67, when it is desired to-raise the beams 17 and 18 and the cutting blade. rlhe [part of the lever 55 to which'the forked member is connected swivelly consists of two parts 68 and 69Iswivelly connected at 7 0,i so that the part 69 may be adjusted swivelly with relation to the part 68, and held so ad-1 justed by the set screw 71, so that when ilipping the cutting blade just the reverse to that shown in Fig. 1, the forked member will extend downwardly.
