Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 22, 1914. Serial No. 878,576.
To all LC/LOHL it may concern.
Be it known that I, GEORGE ABBEY, a citizen oi the United States, resid ng at Osceola, in the county of Mississippi and State longitudinal movement of the logs with respect' to thewagon, the supportingmeans having novel log limiting means mounted 'therein for preventing the transverse movement of the logs on the wagon. 4
Another object of my invention resides in the provision of a novel log limitingineaiis which in this instance includes a chock block slid-ably associated with the supporting means, .both the supporting means and the block having novel means associated therewith foradjustably holding the limiting means in a set position on the supportingmeans.
A still further object of my invention resides in the novel identical means for mounting the adjusting and supporting means on the wagon bolster.
A still further object of my invention re-' sides in the provision of a ,novel means pro vided inthe chock blockfor receiving the chain used for adjusting purposes, the block being also provided with novel means communicating with the receiving means for facilitating the locking of the chain in the block. I I
A still further ob ect of my nvention re- Y sides in the construction of a novel chock block, the latter being also provided with improved means for' facilitating the removal of the chain inthe event of 'the'samebecoming jammed thereiri and is also provided with novel means for facilitating the removal of the block from the supporting means or channel iron.
A still further object of my invention resides in the p'rovisionof a device of the character described that is simple in construction, efficient in operation and one that can be manufactured and placed'on the market t a minimum cost.
Other objects as Well as the nature,.c haracteristic Ieatures and scope of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanyingdrawings and pointed out in the claims forming a part of this specification.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my invention applied to the rear bolster of a wagon; Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal and vertical sectional view of the chock block; Fig. 3 is a front end elevation-a1 view oi the chock block; and
Referring more particularly to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate like or .corresponding parts throughout the different views, I connect to the rear axle 1 of a vehicle, the usual wagon hounds 2, on which are disposed the Patented May so, iiaic.
Fig. 4c is an enlarged rear end elevational view of my improved chock block showing to advantage the'novel means for receiving and locking the chain therein.
rear bolster. 3, the latter being positioned directly above the rear axle l. on the bolster 3 and extending beyond the ends of the axle is my improved chiinnel iron 4 for receiving and supporting logs,-
the sides 0 of which prevent longitudinal movement of the logs with respect to the Disposed withinthe channel iron wagon. 4: beyond the sides 5 thereof is a metallic plate 6, the respective ends of whiclrare slightly upturned for a purpose to be here-3 -inafter described and which plates are provided with an opening through which is through the channel iron,jbol'ster, hound and axle and serves the purposeof providing a rigid and removable connection between these parts. Arranged in close relation with the inner-surfaces of the sides 5 of the chan- Disposed nel iron and resting upon the bottom there- 0 of is my improved chock block which. in this instance consists ofa substantiallyhol- -low rectangular body, the sides 8 of which slope downwardly as at 10 'from.the front end 9 of the rear end 11 in order to con form substantially to the outer surface of the log. The front end 9 ofthe body is provided adjacent its upperv end With a circular aperture 12 through which is received the free end of a chain 13, the inner end ofthe chain being connected to one of the upturned ends of the plate 6.
In order to hold the block in Ti'aIiQuS ad jiisted positions within the'channelfi'ron, ll
iio
have'positioned alongitudinal slot H-i thq 9o P 61 a bolt 7, the latter also extending lOO front end 9,the upper end of the slot being arranged in communication with the apex ture 12 so that the linkof the chain which is receivable -within' the aperture may be arranged and inserted within the slotv for locking the. chock block "anddilniting the outward movement of the same within the chana about the slot 1i and constitutes a suitable neliron. Azcirc'ular recess is" depressed bearingls'urfacefor the end of theadjacent 1 link which is disposed in a plane at substan- .tially rightangles' to the plane of, the link- I within the slot 14 and facilitates the locking ,of the chain in the block.
The upper-edge of the rear end 11, is provided substantially intermediate its edges with a recess 16 for receiving. the chain and; when the same is jammed in the slot 14:, I find it expedient to wngpvide enlarged openings 18 in the sides 10, site, e openings permitting of the insertion of a suitable tool for lifting the chain from the slot especiallyiwhen a log isdisposed on the block which prevents access from the open upper end of the chock block.
In the event that the block .becomes. jammed within the sides 5 of the channel ironft and it -is impossibleto remove the same in the ordinary. manner,"I have pro-- 'vided a recess-l9 in the lower edge of the fr tend 9, said recess permitting of the reception of a suitable tool for forcing the block upwardly fromthe channel iron.
When logs are being placed on thechannel have found it expedient to remove the from the-iron and slide the same to the outer end on the chain 13 to a position adjacent the hook 20 secured. thereon, the
loading. of the wagon with logs. I 7A1 hough I have shown and described the saidhook being engageable in an ordinary locking chain, not shown, for facilitating the preferred embodiment of my invention, I
desire to be understood that I am not to be limited tothe exact details shown, however,
-great stress is laid upon the, arrangement of vings' for facilitating the disengaging 0 the novel arrangement of the channel iron having the improved block adjustably ass'uw elated therewith for preventing the longitudinal and transverse movement of the logs with respect to the wagon.
From the abovedescription taken in connection with the accompanymg drawings, it
can easily be seen that I have provided a de yicethat is simple in constructiomcontainmg but a few simple parts that can be cheaply manufactured and assembled ,and-
when assembled can be placed upon the mar;
ket and sold at a minimum cost. i 4 It will be understood that the above deprehendonly'the general and preferred emscription and accompanying drawings combodiment of my invention and that various minor'changes in detail of construction, pro-' portion and arrangement of the parts may be made within the scope of the appended claims and without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention;
Having'thus fully described'my invention, I
Letters Patent, -is:, r
1. The combination with a channelfliron disposed on a bolster, an attaching clip'connected to the center of the channel iron, a
block s'lidably supported within the channel iron, the front face of the block being pro-, vided with an opening and a slot,- a' chain what I claim as new and desire to secure .by
conneeted to the attaching clip and insertible in the opening'and engageable with theslo't for holding the block in a set position, the
sides of said block being provided with citpenthe chain from the slot.,
. l 2. As an article of manufacture, a chock block i including a rectangular body, the front wall of which is provided with a chain receiving recess, the rear wall of the body beinghigher than the frontwall and provided with an opening and a communicating slot adapted to receive and lock'a chain, and
the front surface of the rear wall being depres'sed about the slot to provide a recess whereby to prevent accidental disengagementof the chain.
