To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK STUTTERHEIM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed Attachments for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to feed attachments for sewing machines and has for its object to provide a device of such class, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, for the purpose of feeding the fabric to be stitched.
A further object of the invention is to provide an attachment for the purpose set forth, in a manner as hereinafter referred to, with means whereby the attachment can be employed in connection with sewing machines operating at different speeds.
A further object of the invention is to provide an attachment for the purpose set forth, in a manner as hereinafter referred to, with means whereby the speed .of the feed roller, forming an element of the attachment, can be changed when occasion so re quires.
A further object of the invention is to provide an attachment for the purpose set forth, in a manner as hereinafter referred to, with means whereby the attachment can be adjustably secured in position with respect to the operating mechanism of the sewing machine.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a sewing machine attachment for the purpose set forth which is comparatively simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, adjustable and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
TWith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes,jvariations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure l is a sectional elevation of a feed attachment for sewing machines in accordance with this invention showing the adaptation thereof -in connection with a sewing machine. Fig.
2 is a top view illustrating the attachment n adjustably secured in position with respect to the sewing machine. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional elevation of an attachment as applied to the sewing machine. Fig. 4C is an elevation, broken away, of a holding down element of the attachment. Figs. 5 and 6 are details.
Referring to the drawings in detail 1 denotes a sewing machine of any suitable construction and which when the feeding attachment is adjustably connected therewith has its base plate 2 supported by and adjustably secured to a supporting member which is in the form of a compartment casing and the latter comprises a bottom plate 3, sidewall 4l, a division wall 5, side wall 6, and a pair of end walls 7, 8. The end walls 7, 8, are formed integral with the division wall 5 and side wall 6 and in connection therewith provide a compartment 9,
which is open at its top and closed at its side and end. llhe division wall 5 and side walls (l are connected with the bottom plate 3. The walls A, 5, in connection with the plate 3 provide a compartment 10 closed by the base plate 2. The walls 1, 5, are shouldered as at 11 and said base plate 2 is seated upon tho said shoulders and is fiush with the top edges of the walls 4, 5. Shiftable retaining members 12 are attached to the walls l, 5, .and are capable of being moved to extend over the upper face ofthe base plate 2 lwhereby the latter is detachably secured to the casing.
The compartment 9 when the feeding attachment is set up in position is arranged at the rear of the sewing machine and is disposed longitudinally.
The feeding attachment includes a holding down element for the fabric when the latter is fed to the needle to be stitched and the said holding down element is resiliently supported and vertically adjustable. The holding down element consists of a vertically disposed member 13 having a right angular extension 1A at the top, the latter `is formed with a vertically disposed opening 15 and said extension 14 provides a `bearing for a vertically adjustable rod 16,
having at its lower end an inverted yoke 17,
which provides a bearing for the shaft 18, of a corrugated holding down roller 19. The member 13 at its lower end has a right angular enlargement 20, formed with a vertically disposed opening 21, through which ment.

The shaft 53 projects from the bearings 55 and carries a corrugated feed roller 56 which is arranged in alinement with respect to the holding down roller 19 and the feed rollers 19 and 56Y associate for the purpose of pulling fabric to be stitched after leaving the needle of the machine. Detachably secured to the shaft 53 is a gear wheel 57.
Y The operating mechanism for driving the feed shaft 53 includes a counter shaft 58 journaled in slide bearings 59, 60, and carries a. gear wheel 61 and further having detachably connected thereto a pinion 62. Associated with the counter shaft 58 is a drive shaft 63, mounted in slide bearings 64, 65, and carries a gear 66 which meshes with the gear 61. The drive shaft 63 pro jects through the end wall 7 and has secured Vthereon a series of pulleys 67, 68 and 69 of different diameters and each of which is operatively connected with the prime motor for operating the shaft 63. The pulleys 67, 68 and 69 being of different diameters set up provision for driving vthe shaft 63 at different speeds. The operating mechanisn'l for the feed shaft 53 further includes a speed change device which associates with the feed shaft 53 and counter shaft 58 and the said feed change device consists of a shaft 70, which is journaled in slide bearings 71 and which has secured thereto two sets of gears, the gears of one set are indicated atr72, 73 and 74, and the gears of the j other set at 75, 76 and 77. The gears of each setV are of di'erent diameters with respect to each other and the gears of one set are oppositely disposed with the gears of the other set. The gears 72, 73 and 74 are adapted to mesh with the gear wheel 57 and the gears 75, 76 and 77 are adapted to mesh with the pinion 62.
The gears 72, 73 and 74 control the speed Vof the shaft 53 and the gears 75, 76 and 77 control the speed of the shaft 70. By setting up the speed change device in the manner as stated, provision is made whereby the shaft 53 can be driven at different :rates of speed and also enables the attachment to be employed with sewing machines operating at different speeds.
The pinion 62 and gear 57 are interchangeable, that is to say the gear 57 can be employed upon the counter shaft 58 and the pinion 62 upon'the shaft 53.
When it is desired to change the position of the operating mechanism for the said shaft 53, counter shaft 5S is adjusted as well as the drive shaft 68, due to the fact that the said shafts are mounted in slide bearings and the shaft 70 of the speed change device is also adjusted due to the fact that it is mounted in slide bearings.
The slide bearings for the shafts 58, 63 and 70 are secured to the bottom plate 8.
The operating mechanism for the feed shaft enables the drive shaft 63 to be operated at different speeds, the shaft 70 of the speed change device operated at different speeds, and the speed shaft 53 operated at different speeds, under such conditions the said shaft 53 can be adjusted so that a fast feed of the fabric will be had with respect to the speed of the needle of the sewing machine mechanism.

A feed attachment for sewing machines comprising a feed roller, "a holding down roller associated therewith, a shaft for carrying said feed roller, means for driving said shaft at different speeds, a vertical element, a spring controlled vertically movable rod mounted in saidelement, a yoke carried on the lower end of the rod and having said holding down roller mounted therein, a pair of spools adapted to abut against the needle post of the machine, horizontal spacing rods connecting said element to said spools, adjustable bracing means for said horizontal spacing rods and spools, holding arms for the spools, and a clamping device for the holding arms.

A feed attachment for sewing machines comprising a feed roller, a holding down roller associated therewith, a shaft for carrying said feed roller, means for driving said shaft at dierent speeds, a vertical element, a spring controlled vertically movable rod mounted in said element, a yoke carried on the lower end of the rod and having said holding down roller mounted therein, a pair of spools adapted to abut against the needle post of the machine, horizontal spacing rods connecting said element to said spools, adjustable bracing means for said horizontal spacing rods and spools, holding arms for the spools, a clamping device for said holding arms, and a hand operated elevating means supported by said device and capable of engaging said vertical rod for elevating the same.

A feed attachment for sewing machines comprising a feed roller, a holding down roller associated therewith, a shaft for carrying said feed roller, means for driving said shaft at different speeds, a vertical element, a spring controlled vertically movable rod mounted in said element, a yoke carried on the lower end of the rod and having said holding down roller mounted therein, a pair of spools adapted to abut against the needle post of the machine, horizontal spacing rods connecting said element to said spools, adjustable bracing means for said horizontal spacing rods and spools, holding arms for the spools, a clamping device for said arms, a lever adapted to be pivotally connected with the sewing machine and carrying a fieXible element coupled with said vertically movable rod, and a foot operated means connected with the said lever for actuating the same to elevate the rod carried by said element.

A feed attachment for sewing machines comprising a feed roller, a holding down roller associated therewith, a shaft for carrying said feed roller, a vertical element, a spring controlled vertically movable rod mounted in said element, a yoke carried on the lower end of the rod and having said holding down roller mounted therein, a pair of spools adapted to abut against the needle post of the machine, horizontal spacing rods connecting said element to said spools, adjustable bracing means for said horizontal spacing rods and spools, holding arms for the spools,'a clamping device for the holding arms, a speed change device, an operative connection between said device and said shaft for driving the same, and means for adjusting said speed change device.
5. A feed attachment for sewing machines comprising a feed roller, a holding down roller associated therewith, a shaft carrying said feed roller, means for driving said shaft at different speeds, a vertical element, a spring controlled vertically movable rod mounted in said element, a yoke on the lower end of said rod carrying the holding down roller, clamping means for detachably maintaining said element at the rear of the needle head of the machine, and a hand operated elevating means for the needle head supported by said clamping means, said hand operated means capable of engaging with the said rod for elevating the same.
