To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WVILLIAM. S. HARLEY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and- State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compression-Relievers for Crank-Cases; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention relates to the subject of in v ternal combustion engines, and has more particular relation to crank cases of such engines. I 1
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and thoroughly practical attachment forcrank cases by means of which compression and other retarding influences are auto matically and instantaneously removed from the crank case.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention contemplates equipping the crank case with a rotary valve that is oper ated by the crank shaft and is so timed in its operation that on the down-stroke of the piston, the valve will be open to the atmosphere so that air and the like within the crank case will be forced out, and on the upstroke of the piston, the valve will be closed and thereby prevent air being'drawn into the crank case.
One simple and practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in eley ation of a crank case equipped with the improved compres sion reliever. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional. view taken substantially on the line 22, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 33, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar view taken on the line 4-4, Fig. 2.
The improved compression reliever forming the subject matter of this application is one that may be used in connection with the usual or any preferred type of crank case without materially altering the said case. The crank case shown in the accompanying drawing is designated generally by the numeral 1 and incloses the crank 2,to which the piston rod 3 is attached. At one side, the crank shaft 4: projects beyond the case and is equipped with a gear wheel 5, and adjacent said gear, the case is provided with an outwardly projecting boss 6 having a longitudinal opening 7 extending therethrough, and intermediate its length, the boss is provided with a lateral outlet opening 8 that communicates with the longitudinal opening 7 and the atmosphere, respectively.
A sleeve or bushing 9 is fitted within the opening 7, the inner end of said bushing extending to the crank case 1 and its outer end being provided with an annular flange 10 that overlaps the outer end of boss 6 and is provided with peripheral notches 11 complc mental to opening 12 formed in the outer end of said boss, said notches and openings cooperating with a pin or key 18 to prevent rotary movement of the bushing relative to the boss. The bushing 9 is provided with a lateral outlet port 14 that registers with the outlet port of the boss 6.

The outer end of the valve 15 projects slightly beyond the outer end of bushing 9 and telescopes with the hub 17 of a gear 18, said gear 18 being in mesh with the gear 5 of the crank shaft. A pin or key 19 is employed to rigidly, but detachably connect hub 17 to the 'valve 15. It is preferred to make the engagement between gear 18 and the valve 15 a detachable one for the reason that such permits access to be had to the flanged end 10 of the bushing 9 to facilitate adjustments of said bushing through the notches 11, openings 12, and pin 13.
The gear 5 of the crank shaft, may also be used for imparting rotary movement to a gear 20 that actuates suitable sparking mechanism, not shown, in addition to its described functions of operating the valve 15.
It being understood that the bushing 9 is stationary and that its outlet port 11 is in alinement with the outlet port 7 of boss 6. and that the valve 15 is rotatable in the bushing, it will be seen that on a downward stroke of the piston rod 3, gear 5 will rotate gear 18 and thereby impart a rotary movement to said valve that will cause outlet port 16 of the valve 15 to aline with port 14 of said bushing 9, and thereby relieve compression in the crank case. On the upstroke of the piston, the described gears will rotate valve 15 to remove port 16 from alinement with port 14, thereby closing the communication to the atmosphere and prevent air being drawn into the crank case 1.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A compression reliever comprising a crank case provided with an outwardly projecting portion having a discharge port therein, a bushing adjustably mounted therein and-provided with a discharge port in alinement with the port of the projecting portion, a valve rotatably mounted in the bushing and provided with a port adapted to be alined with the port of the bushing, and crank shaft actuated means for rotating the valve to cause the outlet port thereof to aline with the port of the bushing on one stroke of the crank shaft and move out of such alinement on another stroke of said crank shaft.
2. A compression reliever for crank cases comprising a boss provided with an outlet port in communication with the atmosphere, a valve rotatable therein and in communication with the interior of the crank case and provided with an outlet port adapted to be alined with the port of the boss, and means for operating the valve.
3. In a compression reliever the combination with a crank case provided with a lateral discharge port and having a crank shaft projecting therefrom, a valve communicating with the interior of the crank case and provided with a lateral outlet, adapted to be alined with the outlet port of the crank case, and means actuated by the crank shaft for operating the valve.
4. A compression reliever comprising a crank case provided with an outwardly projecting boss having a discharge outlet, the outer end of the boss being provided with openings, a bushing seated in the boss and provided with a discharge outlet in alinement with the outlet of the boss, said bushing having a flanged outer end provided with notches registering with the openings.

A compression reliever comprising a crank case provided with a boss having a discharge port, a bushing seated within the boss and provided with a discharge port in alinement with the port of the boss, means for fastening the boss to the bushing to prevent movement of the bushing relatively to the boss, a valve rotatably mounted in the bushing and provided with a discharge port adapted to be alined with the discharge port of the bushing, and meansfor operating the valve.
6. In a compression reliever for'crank cases, the combination of a crank case having a boss provided with an outlet port, a bushing stationary within the .boss and provided with a port in alinement with the port of the boss, a valve rotatably mounted within thebushing and provided with a discharge port adapted to be alined with the port of the bushing, said valve having a portion proj ecting beyond the outer end of the bushing, a gear detachably mounted on the projecting portion of the valve, a crank shaft having a portion projecting beyond the case, and a gear on the projecting portion'of the shaft and meshing with the'gear of the valve.
7 In a compression reliever for crank cases, the combination with a crank case provided with a boss, the boss being provided with an outlet port, a bushing in the boss and provided with an outlet port in alinement with the port of the boss, means for fastening the bushing and boss to prevent rotary movement of the bushing, a valve in the bushing and provided with a discharge port adapted to be alined with the vport of the bushing, a gear detachably fastened to the outer end of the valve, and
means engaging the gear to rotate the valve.
