PNEUMATIC COTTON PICKING AND TRANSFERRING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented ma as, rare.
Application filed October 14, 1915. Serial No. 55,858.
To all whom it may} concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM M. TULLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Corpus Christhin the county of Nueces and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pneumatic (lotton' Picking and Transferring 'Machines;
" and I do declare the following to'be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates broadly to mprovements in cotton picking machines and more particularly to those of the pneumatic typein which thecottonis drawn by suct on trom the plants and deposited into a receiver carried by the machine.
The object of the invention is to provide novel means whereby the cotton, after once being picked and deposited into the receiver,
.may be readily transferred from the latter to a. wagon, whereby it may be conveyed to a gin or the like without using the picking machine for this purpose. I
With this general object in View, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and in unique combinations of parts to'be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawings wherein,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a machine constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof with parts broken away and in section; Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section taken on the planes indicated by the line 3-8 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4. is a detail horizontal sectionthrough the suction device and parts immediately associated therewith, this view being taken on the plane of the line ti-{t of. Fig. 8; Fig. 5 is a detail front elevation with the unloading tube coupled to the suction device; an'd'Fig. 6 is a detail vertical section taken on the plane of the line 6--6 of Fig. 5.
In describing the invention, reference will be made to the accompanying drawings by similar reference characters placed on corresponding parts, throughout the several views. To this end, the numeral 1 indicates a portable truck which-may be drawn by tractor or horse power and thus propelledor receiver 2 which. is preferably provided 'means 10. When desired, however, the gate 8 may be swung inwardly across the pipe 5 to direct cotton 11). the latter through the branch 7 rather than allowing such'cotton to enter the receiver 2, this beingexpedient for a purpose yet to appear.
As is common with devices of the class to which the invention relates, a suction fan 11 is rotated within the housing 4, being preferably driven from a gasolene en ine 12 through the instrumentality of the Iriction drive 13 thrown into and out of action at will by the provision of an appropriate lever 14:.
One side of the housing 4:," in alincment with the axishf the fan 11, is provided with an outwardly extending flange or sleeve 15 which normally receives therein the con nected-rear ends of a' plurality of cotton picking tubes-l6 through which the cotton is drawn from the plants and deposited into the housing 4, it being conveyed from the latter through the pipe 5 into the receiver 2. Normally, the pickingtubes 16 are held within the sleeve 15 by a set screw 17 or by any other preferred type of. fastener, but it will be obvious that by loosening the set screw or other locking device, the tubes may i be easily removed. v
Mounted in any preferred manner, being shown in the present embodiment of the in- 'vention as extending through the front of the receiver'2 and as supported by a bracket 18 on the housing i, is an unloading tube 19 whose rear end disposed in the afore said receiver and is preferably equipped with a flexible hose or the like 20. The front end of the tube 19, on the other hand, is curved downwardly and equipped with an elbow 2i hinged thereto at 22 and nor-. mally held supported by a hook 23 or the equivalent thereof. The free end of the elbow 21 is so shaped as to be received snugly in the sleeve l5, after first removing the tubes 16 therefrom. Thus it-will be evident that when the receiver 2 has been filled with cotton picked from the field by the tubes 16, the latter may be removed, whereupon the elbow 21 may be coupled to the inlet of the v suction device, with the result that the latter will create a suction through the unloading tube 19, thus allowing the contents of the aforesaid receiver to be drawn therefrom and discharged through the branch 7, the .gate 8 having been previously disposed inwardly to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 4. The branch 7 may either deposit I directly into a wagon or the like disposed construction of the machine is comparatlvely simple, lts use will be efficient and its temporarilv alongside of the machine, or a tube (not shown). may lead from said branch to such wagon,'or to a stack in the field.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be obvious that although the advantages numerous. In the drawings, certain specific details of construction have been shown, for illustrative purposes, and in the preceding such details have been described, but it' is to be understood that-numerous changes may be made within the scope of the invention as suction and blast device for delivering ma claimed, without sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
I claims? 1. incombination, a receiver, a combined terial into said receiver or'at another point,
a passage member through which material is tobe conveyed to theaforesaid suction j and blast device, a second passage member .means for detachably connectin leading from the receiver, and coupling said passagemembers with the inlet of the aforesaid device. s
\ 2. In condnvzatron, a receiver, a combined,
vsuction and'blast deviceior delivering materialinto said receiver or at another point,
a detachable passage member leading to the inlet or said suction-and'blast device and' 1 inlet'iof said suction either of through which material is to be conveyed into said device, and an additional passagemember, leading from the receiver and adapted to be coupled to said inlet of the aforesaid device when the other passageaforesaid device when the other passage member is detached.
4. In combination, a receiver, a combined suction and blast device for delivering material into sa1d receiver or at another pomt,
adetachable passage member leading to the nd blast device and through which materlal is to-be conveyed into. said device, and an additional passage member leading from the receiver and having a laterally swinging elbow adapted to be coupled to said inlet of the aforesaid suction and blast device when the other passage member is detached.
5. In combinatlon, a receiver, a combined suction and blast device for delivering material into said receiver or at another point,
a sleeve at the inlet of said suction and blast device, an inlet tube telescopically engaging said sleeve, releasable fasteningmeans for. normally preventing removal of.
the tube, and an additional tube leading" from the receiver and having al -laterally swinging elbow for telescopic engagement" when the first with the aforesaid sleeve named tube is removed. v, In testimony whereof'I have hereunto set my hand in presence 'oftwo subscribing witnesses. I A
