Description

LORENZ() MYHEW.
mp'royement in Axle Skein.
No. 118,377. Patemed-Aug. 22, 137i.
PATENT OFFICE.
LORENZO MAYHEW, OF GREENFIELD, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN AXLE-SKEINS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,377, dated August 22, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LORENZO MAYHEW, of Greenfield, in the county of Saratoga and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in VVagon-Axles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and igures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is arepresentation of vertical longitudinal section of my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same.
This invention has relation to wagon-axles7 and is designed as an improvement on the subject of a patent granted tome April 11, 1871.
This improvement consists in fastening the broad skeins to the end of the spindle by one or more rivets, so that they may be tightened up according as they become loose from the shrinking of the wood; also in having the linchpin to pass through the broad skeins, and in construct ing the washer with the stop projection a little distant from the opening in the ilange, as and for the purpose hereinafterV described.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating this invention, A represents the wood part of the spindle; B B, the broad metallic skeins; C, a
rivet for fastening them at their forward ends to the spindle; D, a linchpin, which is made to pass through the skeins B instead of through a separate piece. This arrangement of the linchpin is simple and not very expensive, and has an advantage over other arrangements, inasmuch as all the fasteuings which secure the skeins to the spindle resist the strain and jarring ofthe wheel against the pin. E designates the ilan ged washer F, the opening in the iiange; F', the stop projecting from the inner surface of the ange, and located at some distance from the opening F, so that, when the wagon is backed, the opening will not be liable to stop directly opposite the linchpin, as when the stop is just beside it.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the axle-skein and linchpin, the anched washer E, having the rim-opening F and the radial stop F', substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
LORENZO MAYHEW.
