C. KNOJLH. DRAWN CAGE FOR ROLLER BEARINGS.
APPLICATION FILED Aue.20. 19 5.

I Mex and in. assay CONRAD KNOTH, OF NEWARK, NEW] JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO HYATE. ROLLER BEELSJNG- GOWANY, OF HARRISON, NEW 3 COREGR-AIION OF NEW JERSEY DRAWN CAGE FOR RfiLLER-BIEIKRIN its.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 20, 1915.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CONRAD KNo'rl-r, a citizen of the United States, residing at'173 Jelliff avenue, Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drawn Cages for Roller-Bearings, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
This invention relates to a so called selfcontained set of rolls for a roller-bearing, the set comprising a cage to guide the rolls in their working position in the casing of the bearing, and also hold them together in a unitary structure, which greatly facilitates their handling and transportation. I
The object of the present invention is to produce a cheap and simple construction for r such roll-sets.
The invention was devised primarily for use with hollow rolls such as are shown formed by winding a strand of metal into spiral coils upon a mandrel, and the cage with the ends of such rolls by forming studs upon the cage to enter the cores of the rolls.
The cage consists of cylindrical shell With wings turned inwardly from longitudinal slots upon its periphery to fit the op posits sides of the rolls, and annular heads secured within the shell next the ends of the Wings. The heads are provided with studs to enter the ends of the rolls, or rods may be extended through the heads and the bores of the rolls, or any other means employed to prevent the rolls from falling out or" the spaces between the wings.
The construction will be understood by reference to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal section of a bearing on a vertical line through the center oi Fig. 2, with the shaft embraced by the rolls; F ig. 2 is an end View of tlie rollset with a shaft shown inside the rolls; Fig. 3 is a section of the cage, at the ends of the rolls, on line 3-3 in Fig. 4-; 4; is a side elevation of the cage with one end flanged and the other end left open to receive the rolls and the heads; and Fig. 5 is an end View of one of the heads adapted to fit within the ends of the cage. Figs. 6 and 7 show tie-rods in. the rolls.
A cylindrical casing c is shown in Fig. 1
- having Serial No. 4 6,416.
The a; 'r e 1 l c .c peiip 162} ()1. the page 1.: .naae mm a so .on or". tubing and when finished posscsscs two collars /l and c, with longitudinal slots j extending between the collars an longitudinal bars at the edgesthe slots. The metal punched from the slo.; is bent inwardly from the edges of g, forming wings 71, which are at distances apart to fit opposite sides at th rolls, as shown in Fig. 3. Heads 2' are fitted to opposite ends of the shell within the collars {Z and e, and are preferably formed upon their outer corners withrabhets j into which flanges 6' can be bent from the said collars. The heads are shown with conical studs lrxupon the inner side adapted to tit loosely within the bores of the rolls, and to hold them in the cage.
Fig. 1 shows the rolls adjusted between the heads, the shell fitted over the heads, and the flanges c on both ends of the heads 3.
into the rahhets j, thus making the end of the shell flush with the outer sides oi heads.
Fig' 42 shows the flange e bent inwardly upon the collar 6, which would look one the heads in place against the ends of the it, but the collar (5 shown wholly cylindrical to permit the insertion of the rolls within the cage, and the application. of the other head, after which the edge of the collar a? would be spun or flanged into the rabhet upon the second head.
Fig. 3 shows the wings ll, bent so that their flat sides lie tangential to the cylindrical sides of the rolls a, but'the guiding action of the cage may he performed just as well by bending the wings, as shown at in F 6, so as to be radial to the sum of the-roll instead of tangential.
igs. 6 and 7 show one side of a hav ing such construction for the wing, and also showing the heads m made perfectly and connected by tie-hers a which tended through the rolls and suoul ed to enter hol in the head. in which th e 12. are riveted, as shown in l? T the h ads are thus held at a n apar is no necessity or ends the cage, and the ends iii? . heacle, between which Elie lieiil would. extend.
