To all'whom t may concern. Be it known thatl, ROY P. -WILmMs,
'a citizen of 'the United States, residing at Pasadena, in the county of- Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Spray-Nozzle, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates tos ray nozzles. In the practical utilization' of water in connection with gardening, it is desirable to provide means whereby the Water can be evenly distributed over considerable areas,v
and in which both the ineness of the spray and the area sprayed can be readily controlled.
The principal object of my invention is.
to provide, such a spll'ay nozzle. Sometimes such a spray nozzle may be used in connection with a line of flexible hose, one or more of these nozzles bein connected into the hose and being move rom place to place as desired. At other times'the spray nozzles are permanently located, being connected to underground systems of piping, so that it is simply necessary to turn the water pressure on when it'i needed.
A furtherl object of my invention is to provide a lspray nozzle whichmay be used both with flexible hose and with underground systems of piping.
In such a spray nozzle there is some likelihood of dirt or waste matter accumulating in the inside of the nozzle, and a further object of my invention is to provide a spray nozzle in which the working parts may be readily removed through the top whenever it is necessary for the purpose of cleaning. It is further desirable 1n such a spray nozzle to provide means by which the nozzle can be adjusted, such means being preferably permanently securedin the nozzle itself, and it is a further object ofv my invention to provide means for this purose. v p Further objects and advantages will be made evident hereinafter, or will be evident to one skilled in the art upon an inspection of the accompanying drawing, and a Vperusal of the following specification.

The body member 12 is'secured by means of a thread 31 to the exterior of the branch 23, this body member having lan interiorly threaded cavity therethrough. The grooves 33 terminate at a point 34 near the top of the body member 12. If the plug 13 is in the o en position, the ports 32 register with the ower portion of the grooves 33 and water is supplied to the lower portion of these grooves. This water entering the grooves at a certain velocity, is rapidly accelerated due to the reduction in the sectional area of the grooves, and finally emerges at the point 34, just above the top of the plug 13, at a considerably increased -velocity. As the grooves 33 are inclined,
the water enters the space between 'the top of the plug 13 andthe cap 35 in a tangential direction, setting up a rapidly whirling vortex of water between the top of' the plug 13 and the cap 35. As water lis added to this vortex through the grooves 33 it overiiows through the outlet opening 37 and is thrown o' spirally in all directions around the spray nozzle. By adjusting the plug 13 up and down in the cavity 32, the size of the port opening at 34 may be increased or diminished, and the velocity of the water entering the space above the plug 113 may be4 increased or diminished. I claim as my invention 1. 'A spray nozzle comprising a hollow supporting member adapted to carry waterV under pressure and having an upwardlyV extending branch with an opening in the top thereof, a hollow body member secured on .said branch and having an outlet opening centrally located in the top thereof, a. series of helical grooves being formed in the inner side of the walls of said body member, said grooves being similarly inclined, extending to a position near the top of said body member and being gradually reduced in sectional area as they ascend, and a plug threaded inside said body member and adjustable up and down therein, said plug having a cavity formed therein in o en communication with the lowery portion o said body member, said plug also having a top completely closing the opening through said body member and having ports formed through the walls thereof of such a size as to 'register with the lower portion of 4'said helical grooves when said plug is in the open position, the walls of said .plug between said ports being of such a size as to entirely shut oi the flow of water, through said grooves when said plug is turned to the closed position.

A spray nozzle 'comprising a hollow supporting member adapted to carry water under pressure and having an upwardly extending branch with an opening in-theetop thereof, a hollow body member secured on said branch and having an outlet opening centrallylocated in the top thereof, a series lof helical grooves being formed in the inner side of the walls of said body memberfsaid grooves being 'similarly inclined, extending to a position near the top of said body member and being gradually reduced in sectional area as they ascend, a piug threaded inside said body member and adjustable up and down therein, said plug having a cavity formed therein in open communication with the lower portion of said body member, said completely closing body member and having ports formed through .the walls thereof of such a size as to registerwith the lower portion of said helical groovesswhen said plug is in the open position, the walls ofv said plug between said ports being of such a size as to entirely shut olf the How of water through said grooves when sald plug` is turned to the closed positlon, and a stem f on said plug projecting upwardly vthrough said outlet opening b v which fsaid plug can be turned to adjust said plug axially in said body member. jV
4. A spray nozzle comprising a hollow supporting member adapted to carry water under pressure and having anupwardly 'extendin branch with an 'opening in the top,
