To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARoY H. JOHNSON, of Columbia, in the county of Maury and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flushing-Valves; and I hereby declare that. the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
This invention relates to flushing valves, and is an improvement upon the valve shown in Patent #1,055,538 granted to me March 11, 1913.
The object of the present invention is to simplify the construction of my said patented valve, improve its operation, increase its efiiciency, and prevent freezing thereof; all of which objects are realized by the present invention which I will describe in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional elevation through the complete flushing valve showing the same closed in full lines and partially opened in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a sectional detail view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.
The casing may be composed of two or more parts, having a lower water containing chamber A, and an upper water receiving chamber B, which chambers A and B may be formed in separate castings 1 and 1 united by a thread and socket joint as indicated at 1"; the chambers A and B being separated by a partition 2, which may be confined between the parts 1, 1*, as shown. The part 1 has an inlet 1 communicating with chamber B, and adapted to be connected to a supply pipe; and the part 1 has an outlet communicating with the upper part of chamber A, and preferably of larger diameter than the inlet 1, and adapted to be con nected, in the usual way, to an outlet pipe or receptacle, not shown.
The partition 2 has a central opening which is adapted to be closed by an upwardly opening valve 3 attached to a vertical stem 3 that extends through the opening in partition 2 and preferably has its upper end tapered or reduced as shown at 3 and loosely engaged within a socket 4 in the inner end of a regulating screw 4 which is tapped through a central opening in the top of the chamber B and may be locked in adjusted position by a j am-nut 49, said screw 4 limiting the opening movement of the valve 3 by arresting the vertical movement of the stem 3.
On the lower end of the stem 3 in the chamber A and below the outlet opening l is a spider 3 to which is attached an annular disk or plate 3 which is provided with a large opening adapted to be closed by a downwardly opening valve 5, which has a stem 5 entering a socket or bore 3 in the lower end of stem 3, and may be suspended by a contractile spring 5 from the lower end of the stem 3. The construction is such that valve 5 is normally held closed by the spring 5 but will be opened by the rush of water if the stem 3 be raised quickly to open the valve 3 but when the stem has been raised the valve 5 will be immediately closed by spring 5 and with the ring 3 forms a plunger in the chamber A that will cushion the descent or closing of the valve 3.
Above the spider 3 is a deflecting disk 6, which may be rigidly attached to the stem 3 in any suitable manner, as by a screw 6. This deflecting disk will prevent the water entering chamber A, when the valve 3 is opened, striking and unseating the valve 5. The stem 3 may be raised when it is desired to open the valve 3 by means of a link-rod 7 pivo-tally connected to the stem 3 at its lower end, as by passing it through a hole in the rod, and having its upper end pivotally engaged with one end of a lever 7 fixed to a shaft 7 b extending across the outlet opening 1 On the outer end of the shaft 7 is fixed a lever 7 which may be connected with a pull-cord or chain 7 When the lever 7 is drawn downward, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the stem 3 will be raised and the valve 3* opened; it is shown partially raised in Fig. 1. The extent of opening movement of the valve 3 may be regulated by adjusting the screw 4.
The chamber A always remains filled with water up to the lower edge of the opening 1, therefore on the initial upward movement of the valve stem 3 the pressure of the water on the valve 5 will unseat the latter and permit the valve 3 to move easily, but when lever 7 is released and the stem 3 tends to drop, the water in chamber A and the action of spring 5 closes valve 5 which with the ring 3 then forms a piston in chamber A which retards the descent of the valve stem 3 and the latter descends slowly, according to the weight of the spider, ring and valve on the stem, and the extent of space left for the passage of water around the edges of the partition 3 when the valve 5 is closed.
The time required for closing the valve 3 can thus be regulated, and when the stem 3 is raised, water will flow from the inlet 1 through chamber B into the upper part of chamber A and out at 1, and this flow of water will continue until the valve 3 seats; and the seating of this valve is cushioned and delayed by the parts 3 and 5, acting as a plunger in a dash-pot, in the chamber A.
In order to prevent the valve freezing I provide means by which the valve 3 may be kept partially unseated in cold weather; such means comprises a threaded rod 8 tapped through the lower end of chamber A and provided with an adjusting head 8 and jam-nut 8"; this red 8 can be adjusted inwardly to the position indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 1, in which position it would engage valve 5 just before the latter reaches its lowest position, and arrest its descent thereby holding the valve 3 slightly raised, and permitting a small amount of water to flow from the inlet to the outlet through the valve chambers.
lVhat I claim is:
1. A flushing valve comprising a casing having an upper and a lower chamber, an
inlet to the upper chamber, and an outlet from the lower chamber, and an intermediate partition provided with an opening; with a valve stem extending through the partition from the lower chamber into the upper chamber, a downwardly closing valve on said stem within the upper chamber adapted to close the opening in the parti tion, an annular plate attached to the lower end of said stem within the lower chamber and below the outlet opening, a downwardly opening valve closing the opening in said plate, a spring for closing the latter valve, means for raising said stem to open the inlet valve thereby momentarily opening the lower valve; and a deflector mounted on said stem above the downwardly opening valve to prevent in-rushing water unseating said valve.

thereof, and an intermediate partition provided with an opening; a valve stem .extending through the partition from the lower chamber into the upper chamber, an upwardly opening valve on said stem within the upper chamber adapted to close the opening in the partition, an annular plate attached to the lower end of said stem within the lower chamber and below the outlet opening, a downwardly opening Valve closing the opening in said plate, a spring for closing the latter valve, and means for raising said stem to open the inlet valve thereby momentarily opening the lower valve; a deflecting disk mounted on said .stem above the downwardly opening valve to prevent in-rus'hing water unseating said valve; and a screw in the top of the upper chamber having a socket in its lower end adapted to guide the upper end of the guide rod and limit the lifting movement of said rod, substantially as described.
3. A flushing valve comprising a casing having an upper and a lower chamber, an inlet, an outlet, and an intermediate partition provided with an opening; a valve stem extending through the partition into both chambers, a downwardly closing valve on said stem within the upper chamber adapted to close the opening in the partition, an annular plate attached to said stem within the lower chamber and having an opening therein, a downwardly opening valve mounted on said valve stem for closing the opening in said plate, a' deflecting disk.
