I AUTOMATIC DRAFT-REGULATOR.
. Application filed July 3, 1915. Serial No. 37,859,.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. Hess, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bamford, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automatic Draft-Regulators, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improved draft regulator, comprehending more particularly a means which may be set in any desired position and automatically controlled through a suitable timing device to be released at a predetermined time to per mit a desired operation of the draft device of a heater or the like.
The invention is directed to the utilizing of an ordinary clock or the like having an alarm mechanism and the provision of a lever which is automatically operated at a predetermined time controlled by said alarm device, the operation of thelatter tripping a holding arm carried by a weighted chain or other connector, the release of the hold ing arm permitting the weight to move the connector to accomplish the desired result.
The invention in the preferred form of details will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved draft regulator; Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.
The improved draft regulator comprises a supporting structure involving a base plate 1 and an upright plate 2 secured thereto at right angles and in fixedrelation with the base plate. The supporting frame described is adapted to be secured to any suitable structure, or .to the furnace or other heater by brackets 3, the latter being adapted to project from either side of the frame and adapt the plate to be secured in any desired position. Secured upon the base plate 1 is a time piece 4 shown in this instance in the form of a clock having an alarm winding arbor 5 provided with the usual flat key Specification of Letters Patent.

end of which is connected through the medium of a cord.9 with the shaft 7. The
shorter or outer end of the trip lever is formed with a notch 10, cut in the underslde of the said lever, as shown. An operating chain 11 is provided which extends over a pulley 12, secured upon the upright,
and beyond said pulley the chain is conin the desired direction movement. The end of the chain below the pulley 12 is provided with a suitable weight 13 adapted to be suflicient to move the desired parts when the chain is free to move. 14: is connected to the chain at an appropriate point, the ends of the member being pointed, so that the outer end may engage the notch 10 of the trip lever and the inner end rest upon a cleat or cross. strip 15 secured upon the outer side of the upright 2.
In operation with the alarm mechanism set to sound at a predetermined time, and the holding member 14 engaged as illus trated in Fig. 1 so as to support the chain against movement under the influence of the weight, the sounding of the alarm will wind the connector 9 upon the shaft 7 with the efiect to draw down upon the inner end of the lever 8, releasing the holding member' 14:, and permitting the weight 13 to draw upon a chain to accomplish the de sired operation.
The chain may be attached to the upper fire door of the furnace and also to the lower draft door, so that the upper door may be closed and the lower draft door opened when the weight is free to act.
The device as an entirety may be readily applied to any heater, boiler or other structure wherein it is desired to regulate the draft or the like.
What is claimed is:
1. A draft regulator involving a supporting frame, a time piece thereon, a shaft to be rotated by the time piece, a lever mounted on the frame, a cord connecting the lever and shaft, a Weighted chain for operating the draft or fire doors and means carried by the chain to engage the frame and lever to hold the chain against movement under the influence of the weight. k
2. A draft regulator involving a supporting frame, a time piece thereon, a shaft to A holding member v be rotated by the time piece, a lever mounted on the frame, a cord connecting the lever and shaft, a Weighted chain for operating the draft or fire doors, a strip secured on the upright and a pointed strip secured to the chain and adapted to rest upon the strip on the upright at one end and engage a notch formed in the lever at .theopposite end.
3. A draftregulatorinvolving a supporting frame, a time piece thereon, a 'shaft'to be rotated by the time piece, a lever mount- R. P. SWoRR, W. R. HESS.-
