BOTTLE-STOPPEB DEVICE.
Specificatiihr of Letters Patent.
Patented May a, 1916.
Application filed April 27, 1915. Serial No. 24,270.
ToaZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK CLAYTON HER- BERT, a citizen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and resident of Regents Park road, Regents Park, Lon
don, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Stopper Devices, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a device for pre venting the fraudulent refilling of bottles. The improved devicevis made in separate parts and comprisesa hollow outer or case portion containing a guide and a weight, and an inner neck portion, a tight joint between the device and the neck of the bottle being obtained by means of a tubular washer of cork or other material whereby the use of cement is obviated. The tubular washer which may be in one or more parts also seals the device in the bottle neck.
If desired aiiat or disk valve may be placed between the weight and the upper end of the neck portion. I
The device may be made of porcelain or similar material or combination of materials.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein liigure 1 shows a section through one of the improved stoppers, and Fig. 2 shows a modification. v
Referring to the drawing wherein the same reference letters refer to the same or similar parts, an is the outer or case portion which is attached to the neck I) of a bottle by the metal sleeve 0 in substantially known manner.
To the lower end of the case is fitted a neck-part Z and washer e. This washer serves to seal the line of junction between the end of the case a and the top of the neck .of the bottle and at the same time serves to seal the neck-part (Z in the bottle neck. The washer e is of tubular formation and is preferably tapered as shown to enable a very tight fit to be obtained. It may be made of cork or other suitable material,
and in one or more parts. Above the neckpart (Z is a disk valve and above this valve is a conical weight f whose upper side 1s ribbed. The weig t i is located beneath a guide 9 arranged within the case a. The gu de is provided with a conical recess which corresponds substantially to the conical portion of the weight and may be fixed to the case or may be loose. When the guide is loose the. inside of the case is preferably ribbed. The guide g is less in diameter than the internal diameter of the case a so as to form d scharge passages between.
it and the internal surface of the case a.
The valve is quite loose on its seat and remains seated when the bottle is in the upright position so that no adultera ts can be passed into the bottle but moves from its seat when the liquid container is turned. on its side thereby allowing the contents thereof to pass.
In the modification illustrated in Fig. 2 the end of the case. rests on the upper edge of the tubular washer e and a ring washer h is also used. The ring'washer is shown separate from the tubular washer but may be integral therewith.
The case is provided with a flange and a shorter meta-l sleeveis employed.
A weight other than of conical shape may be used and the ribs may be on the guide as well as or instead of on the weight.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentis:
1. The combination with a bottle neck of an outer casing resting upon the top of the neck, a compressible tubular washer partly within ,the bottle neck and partly within the outer casing, a tubular portion Within thp. {said washer, a weight above the said tubularrportion and an external sleeve for securing the outer casing to the bottle neck.
2. The "combination with a bottle neck of an outer casing resting upon the top of the neck, a compressible tubular washer partly within the bottle neck and partly within the outer casing, a" tubular portion within the said washer, a weight above the said tubular portion, a disk valve between the weight and the tubular portion and an external sleeve for securing thd'outer casing to the bottle neck. I
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
