GRINDING-MACHINE.
Application filed March 23, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. FISCHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Grinding-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is designed to provide a machine of simple character that can be used for forming articles having various and eccentric shapes, and in its preferred construction it comprises a grinding wheel provided with truing means, in combination with means provided with a follower cooperating with forms corresponding to the contours to be produced, whereby the wheel may be caused to cut irregular or regular configurations heretofore made at considerably greater trouble and expense than are involved in manufacturing by my improvements.
The characteristic features of my improvements are fully set forth in the following description and the accompanying drawings in illustration thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a machine embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is an enlarged plan view of the grinding wheel truing mechanism; Fig. 5 is a broken side elevation of the construction shown in Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a top plan view of a preferred modified form of the invention; Fig. 7 is a broken front elevation of the construction shown in Fig. 6; and Fig. 8 is a sectional view of a detail of the construction shown in Figs. 6 and 7.
The invention, in the form illustrated in the drawings, is embodied in a machine comprising the pedestal 1 having thereon a slide or carriage 2 which is adapted to be reciprocated by means of a screw 3 turned by a hand wheel 4. The slide 2 has thereon a slide or carriage 5 adapted to be reciprocated transversely to the direction of movement of the slide 2; the slide 5 being provided with a rack 5 which is engaged by a pinion 6 on a shaft 7 journaled in the slide 2 and turned by the handle 8, whereby the reciprocation is effected. The slide 5 is provided with a clamp 9, operated by a screw 10, by which is held a finger or followe'r 11 adjustable longitudinally and fixed in the desired position, the finger having a spherl- Specification of Letters Patent.

The bearings 12 on the slide 5 have journaled therein an arbor 13 on which is fixed a grinding wheel 14 having a rounded periphery 14 conformslide 17 is movable on the bracket 15 by means of a screw 18 which is turned by a handle 19, the slide being movable in the direction of the follower 11. A form 20, having the contour 21, is fixed on the slide 17 by bolts 22 whose heads move in the ways 17' transverse to the movement of the slide, whereby the form is adapted to be adjusted transversely.
A bracket 23, carried by the pedestal 1, is provided with a vertical sleeve 23 in which is disposed a stem 24, the latter being movable longitudinally by a screw 25 journaled 'in the bottom of the sleeve 23 and turned by a handle 25. A head 26 is supported and adjustable vertically by the stem 24, the head having a slide 27 adjustably mounted thereon and fixed by bolts 28 having heads movable in the ways 29.
The blank of an article 30, to be ground, is fixed on the slide 27 by means of bolts 31 having heads movable in the ways 29' transverse to the ways 29, whereby the article can be adjusted transversely and fixed in the desired position with reference to the wheel 14. The form 20 having been fixed in correct position on the slide 17, the latter is adjusted by turning the handle 19. The slide 2 is adjusted by means of the screw 3 through the operation of the wheel 4 so that the follower 11 touches a datum point of the form. The blank for the article 30 is fixed on the slide 27 in the same relation to the wheel 14 as has been established between the follower 11 and form 20. The article 30 is ground to a con tour of the form 20 by the wheel 14, which is driven in any usual manner and guided by keeping the follower 11 in contact with the contour 21, the desired movements being effected by turning the wheel 4 and handle 8. The vertical adjustment of the head 26 efiected by operating the handle 25 provides for grinding in various planes, at various angles and to various forms, permitting the operator to make successive cuts at the nism comprising a cutting or grinding device 32 (suitably a diamond) mounted in the end of a screw 33, the latter being set radially with reference to a center or centering socket 34' disposed in the plane of the wheel 14 and movable longitudinally through a bearing or slide 35. The part 35 has a circular movement in the way 36 of the head or slide 36 so thatthe diamond 32 is movable in a circular path having a radius determined by the longitudinal adjustment of the screw 33, whereby the periphery of the wheel 14 can be cut to a CllClllLl cross-section of any desired radius, the part 35 being turned by a handle 35. A pin 37', of the radius to which it is desired to bring the periphery of the wheel, is set in the center 34 and the screw 33 is adjusted to set the diamond 32 in contact with the pin, which is then removed. The head or slide 36, which has been previously drawn back on the slide 37 by a screw 38 operated by a wheel 38, is now advanced so that the diamond makes contact with the periphery of the wheel, which is trued by revolving it and oscillating the part 35. A lateral or transverse adjustment of the head 36, laterally adjusting the center of oscillation of the diamond 32, is effected by the adjustment of the slide 37, which is movable by a screw 39 on a support 40, the latter being fixed on the slide 5.
As illustrated in Figs. 6, 7, and 8, the pedestal 1 has connected with its way 1' a bracket 15 on which is mounted a housing 41 provided with the vertical bearings 41 and 41". The bearing 41' contains a vertical sleeve 42 having a circular head or table 42 and a rack 42". A pinion 43 engages the rack 42" to move the sleeve 42 vertically, and a worm wheel 44, which is turned by a hand operated worm shaft 45, turns the pinion, which is fixed thereto, these parts being journaled in the housing. A circular head or table 46 is revoluble on the head 42 by a shaft 47, which is fixed thereto and journaled in the sleeve 42, the shaft being mov-. able through agear wheel 48 to which it is connected and by which it is revolved through a key 47'. The bearing 41"v has journaled on its circular head, a circular head or table 46 which is fixed to the top ofa i vertical shaft 49, the latter being journaled on the bearing. A gear wheel 50 is fixed to the lower end of the shaft 49 and is connected with the gear wheel 48 through the intermediate gear wheel 51, the several gear wheels being inclosed in the housing. The head 46' is adapted for holding a form 52, the head having the circular T-slot 46" 'for holding the bolts 53 by which the form is fixed in. po-
sition for coeperation with the follower 11 (operated as heretofore described), and the head 46 is similarly provided with a circular slot 46 and bolts 53 adapted for holding an article 54 to be formed by the wheel 14, operating as previously described.
As here shown, the pin or follower 11 is are adjusted to the proper positions and clamped to the respective heads 41" and 42' by means of bolts'58'idrawn up by journaled levers 59 in which they are threaded. The
machine is now operated so that the pin 11 follows the concave line 52' of the form 52 and the wheel 14 forms an analogous con cave surface 54 in the form 54, the sleeve 42 being adjusted vertically to bring the material in different horizontal planes of the part 54 into proper relation with the 'wheel.
The concavity 54- having been formed and it being desired to form a convex surface 54" on the article 54analogous to the convex surface 52" of the form 52, the levers 59 are operated to loosen the bolts 58,, the head 46 is turned by hand to bring the surface 52.( into proper relation with the pin 11, and the article 54 is thereby brought into analogous relation to the wheel 14 through the revolution by the head 46 of the parts 49,50, 51, 48, 47 and 46. The parts being properly adjusted, they are fixed in position by operating the levers 59, and the machine is operated as before.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. The combination of means for holding outline of saidform, a grinding wheel our naled on said slide for cutting said article,
"a second slide on which said first slide is' movable'to and from said means, and means whereby said second slide is movable transversely to the movement of said slide first named.
2. The combination with a follower and a grinding device, of a revoluble device for holdinga form in correlation to said follower and a revoluble device for holding an article to be formed in correlation to said grinding device.
3. The combination with a follower and a grinding device, of a revoluble device for holding a form in correlation to said follower, a revoluble device for holding an article to be formed in correlation to said grinding device, and means connectin said revoluble devices whereby the revolution of one effects a similar revolution of the other. 4. The combination with a follower and a grinding device, of a journaled shaft having a head thereon for holding a form in correlation to said follower, a journaled shaft having a head thereon for holding an article in correlation to said grinding device, and means connecting said shafts whereby they are revoluble together.
5. The combination with a follower and a grinding wheel, of a journaled shaft having a head thereon for holding a form in correlation to said follower, a longitudinally movable bearing, a shaft journaled in and movable longitudinally by said bearing, said last named shaft having a head thereon for holding an article in correlation to said grinding wheel, and means connecting said shafts whereby they are similarly revolved.
6. The combination with a follower and a grinding wheel, of a journaled shaft having a head thereon for holding a form in correlation to said follower, a longitudinally movable and revoluble shaft having a head thereon for holding an article in correlation to said grinding wheel, and means connecting said shafts whereby they are similarly revolved.
