Description

A. J. BRYAN.
COTTON BOLL THRESHER.
APPLICATION FILED MAYZO, 1913.
Patmlted May 9, 1916.
H H H I] 'IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII Ill iNVENTOR /6 fifyan 1 fY/uom ATTGRNii ANDREW J. BRYAN. OF GRAHAM. TEXAL.
I COTTON-BULL THRESHER.
Application filed, May 20 To all whom it may concern Be it known that I. Axnnnw .l. BRYAN, a citizen of the United States. residing at Graham, in the county of Young and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (ottondioll Threshers. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in cotton boll threshers.
The object of the invention is to provide a device into which unopened and partially opened bolls maybe fed and the bolls bursted and the cotton separated therefrom.
Another feature resides in means for cleaning the cotton and also means for reg ulating the passage of the cotton through the thresher.
A still further object. of the invention is to provide a device of the character de scribed that will be strong, durable. ellicient, and simple and comparatively inexpensive to construct, also one in which the several parts will not be likely to get out of working order. 1
l/Vith the above and other objects in view the invention has relation to certain novel features of construction and operation. an example of which is described in the folilowing "specification and illustraied in the.
accompanying drawing. wherein:
Figure l is a plan view of the thresher. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view on the line m-.r of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line a.'(1. of Fig. 2, Fig. 4 is a pa; tial end elevation, the door being omitted, lu 5 is a detail in section on the line 1 ;1 of Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 is a detail of the adjusting device.
In the drawings the numeral 1 desigiiat-es side walls of a casing. A metal top plate 2 is secured to the side walls. A bottom plate 3, a curved door 4,-and a board. 5 form the bottom of the casing. The top and bot-- tom of the casing are curved as shown in Fig. -2 whereby an elongated central portion is formed for the reception of a drum 6 fixed on a shaft 7 mounted in the side walls 1. One end of the shaft projects exteriorly and a drivingpulley 8 is fixed thereon. h
The bottom 3 is curved downward and the door-4 has its lower end hinged. thereto, a pocket thus being formed. The upper end of the door is suitably fastened to the board 5. A breast 9 is hinged adjacent the drum Specifica tion of Letters Patent.
Patented May 9, i916.
. 1913. Serial No. 768,763.
(3 by means of depending arms 10 hinged at their lower ends to the walls 1. The drum has radial pins 11 and the breast has similar pins 12 between which the pins 11 pass in staggered relation. Cotton bolls and cotton from the field is fed into the casing over the board 5 to the drum 6 which revolves in a epuntenclockwise direction (Fig. 2). The bolls and cotton are carried down between the pins 12 by the pins'll whereby the bolls are bursted and the-cotton removed.
A blast'of air carries the cotton into the casing over the board 5 and after the hulls and foreign matter has dropped onto the door and the bottom plate, the same blastof air carries the cotton out through the contracted ends of the plates 2 and 3 to a delivery spout 14. Any cotton which may adhere to the drum and its pins 11 will be removed by guard pins 15 depending from a bar 1.6 oxer the drum and-between which the pins 11 pass. cotton being carried back to the breast.
A. hafile piate 17 is hinged to the bar U3 and extends transversely of the casing to the side walls and longitudinally to the entrance. This balile plate is perforated and has its free end adjustably supported by a toothed bar 18 engaging in a slot 1f) in the board The cotton is drawn in between the board and the battle plate and by regulating the space therehet-ween the feed of the cotton-'may be controlled.
The upper end of the breast 9 has brackets 20 mounted on its outer side and eccentrics 21 are rotatably confined in these brackets. eccentrics are fixed on a sl' "t Qil'mountc nthe walls 1 and having a crank handle on one end which engages a segmental rack 24 mounted on the outside of one of the walls 1. By swinging the handle '23 the eccentrics are rotated and the breast adjusted toward and from the cylinder, and thus the cotton according to its condition is permitted to pass any tendency toward choking being avoided. The cotton in passing between 11 and 12 will be more oiless cleaned and all unopened bolls will be bursted and the cotton removed.
Should in running cotton through the and this portion of the cotton quickly.-
passed, through the machine.
This guard prevents the What I claim is:
1. In a device ofthe character described, a pneumatic flue, a baffle plate separating said flue into two compartments, a toothed cylinder rotatably mounted in one of the said compartments, :1 breast coacting 'with said cylinder, and a bar carried by the bafl'le plate, said bar having guard pins cooperating with the toothed cylinder.
2. In a device of the character described, a pneumatic flue, a bafile plate separating said flue into two compartments, a toothed cylinder rotatably mounted in one of the said compartments, a breast coacting With said cylinder, and a bar carried by the ballle plate, said bar having guard pins co-operating with the toothed cylinder, in combination with means for adjusting said bathe plate in said flue to thereby increase or decrease the area. of the compartment wherein said toothed cylinder is located.
In testimony whereof I have'signed my name to. this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
I ANDREW J. BRYAN. Witnesses:
