" CHROMOTROPE.
` To'aZZ wliom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUMPHREY M. GIB- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, inthe county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and e useful Improvements in` Chromotropes, of
which the following is a specification. f
This invention contemplates certain improvements in chromotropes and actuating used for mechanism therefor, such as are The objects of the invention `are to provide in a` chromotrope one or more transenlarged vertical section.
lucent diskswhich will 4 revent the observer from seeing the electric `light within the casing; to provide improved rineans comprising `peripherally grooved rollers for i `supporting and rotating the disks; to provide a protective peripheral binding for each disk to engage with the said supporting rollers; and to provide improved means for driving therollers to rotate the disks in opposite directions. y
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a device embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is an Fig. 3. is a verl e tical'section taken" ina plane at right angles to Fig. 2. Fig. Zlis a fragmental plan view showing the disk-supporting rollers and the driving means therefor. n
The device comprises a casing 5 `having in opposite sides circular `openings 6 which may, if desired,"beiclosedv by panes oftransparent` glass 7.` Located within the casing behind each of the openings 6 is a pair of y disks 8, preferably of glass, each disk havfio ing an ornamentation ofl suitable color and design, so that when* the disks arel rotatedi'n opposite directions, `a variety of ,color effects will be produced, asis well known. Between `the two pairs of disks is a suitable electric light fixture 9 carrying one or more klamps `10 by whichthe disks 8 are illuminated. The inner disk of each pair is made translucent, as by frostingits inner face, so as to prevent the observer from seeing `the ylamps 10. `The outer disk of each pair is of clear lglass so that the design upon the inner disk may be seen.
`In the bottom of the casing is a closed box or support 11 in which is rotatably mounted 'a pair of horizontal shafts 12, one

shorter than the other. Each of these shafts l has fixed on opposite ends two rollers 13 having V-grooves in their peripheries. The rollers lie in the different vertical planes of the disks 8 and the latter are supported and driven by said rollers. Each of the disks 8 has a peripheral protective binding 14 of metal or other` suitable material and the weight of the'disks acts to cause the binding to wedge in the peripheral groove of the roller so that a firm driving contact between the roller and the disk will be effected.-
`The disks are additionallyl guided or supported by grooved guides 15 located atopposite edges of the disks in a plane above the driving rollers 13.
A drive-shaft 16 is mounted in the support or box 11 at right angles to the shafts 12 and is driven by an electric motor 17. Said drive-shaft hasl two worms 18 thereon meshing with worm-wheels 19 on their respective shafts 12. The disks are dierentially rotated; in this instance the worms and worm-wheels are pitched in opposite directions, so that the two shafts 12 will be oppositely rotated. The box 11 may be filled with a lubricant, if desired.
Obviously, one of the openings 6 and one pair of disks 8 and supporting rollers 13 may be omitted and the casing 5 narrowed correspondingly, if desired.
I claim as my invention :V
1. A device of the character described comprising a casing having an opening therein, a pair of vertical circular disks positioned within the casing behind said opening, leach disk having any ornamentation the binding on said disks resting in said grooves, means for additionally guiding or supporting said disks, and means for driving said shafts in opposite directions.
2. A device of the class described coinprising two rotary vertical disks positioned 'ingbehind-said disks, thedisk'next to the side by side and each having a suitable ornathe observer from seeing said lamp, and mentation thereon, a casinginclosing said means for differentially Arotating said disks. disks and having an opening thru'gh which In testimony WhereoQI hereuntok set my l0 the disks are visible, a lamp Within the eas- Wha-nd in the presence of a Witness. l
