COMBUSTION DEVICE.
Patented May 9, 1916.
Application filed September 9, 1915. Serial No. 49,743.
To all 1071,0771, it may concern Be it known that 1, 'WILLIAM J. SrIUL'rs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cherryvale, in the county of Montgomery and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Combustion Device, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is adapted to be employed for converting liquid fuel into gas and for effecting a combustion of the gas thus produced.
The invention aims to improve the generator structure, to improve the 'means whereby the air is admitted into the burner, and to improve the construction of the burner and allied parts.
lVith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter 'described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing :Figure 1 shows one form of the invention in longitudinal section, parts appearing in elevation; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig.
l 8 is a fragmental top plan showing a modilied form ofthe invention; Fig. 4 is a section on the line H of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a fragmental perspective showing a torch adapted for use in connection with either form of the invention.
In carrying out the invention as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 there is provided a transversely arched burner including an inner wall 1, an outer wall 2, bottoms 8 connecting the walls,,and a wall 4i connecting the walls 1 and 2 at one end of the burner, the other end of the burner being open. The
" burner is provided with a plurality of-perforations 5 located as may be desired, the perforations preferably being disposed n the outer wall 2 and in the end wall 4;. Disposed in the open end'of the burner and secured. at its lower extremities to the bottoms 3 is a transversely arched separator 6 defining a main air inlet? and an auxiliary air inlet 8. I
The numeral 9 indicates a fuel supply pipe beneath the burner, the pipe 9 being equipped with a check valve 11 and with a hand valve 10. The supply pipe 9 is upwardly extended at the rear of the burner as shown at 12 and is forwardly extended to form generators l4 and 16 united by a connection 15. The generators 1 1 and 16 are of different diameters and are located at different heights. Owing to this construction and owing to the fact that the generator 1 1, the connection 15 and the upper portion of the extension 12 form an inverted" U, the cold oil proceeding through the pipe?) will be prevented from flowing too. abruptly lnto the generators. A neck 17 unites the generator 16 with a nozzle 18 discharging into the air inlet 7, the nozzle comprising a seat 19 controlled by a needle valve 20.
In practical operation, the oil as it flows lnto the generators 14 and 16 is converted by heat from the burner, into gas, the gas passing through the nozzle 18 and into the burner by way of the inlet 7. In this connection it is to be observed that the separator 6 acts as a deflector for the nozzle. Air is drawn into the burner not only through the inlet 7 but through the inlet 8 as well, a thoroughly efiicient mixture thus being secured. passes through the perforations 5 and burns thereat.
In that form of the invention which is delineated in Figs. 3 and 4-, the burner 21 is of annular form when viewed in top plan and comprises any desired number of perforations 22. The burner preferably comprises an outer trough 26 and an inner The mixture thus produced l trough 27, theadjacent edges of which are overlapped or telescoped as shown at 28. The outer trough 26 of the burner which coacts with the inner trough to form the burner is provided with an extension 29 in which is disposed a separator 30defining air inlets 31 and 32, a nozzle 38 projecting into the inlet 31 and carrying a needle valve 34: as before. Disposed above the burner 21 is an annular fuel supply pipe 23 containing a check valve 24: and a hand-valve 25, one end of the pipe communicating with the nozzle 33.
The operation of the structure shown in Figs. 4 and 3 does not differ materially from the operation of the structure shown in Figs. 1 and 2, so far as the relation existingbetween the nozzle, air inlets and the separator are concerned.
If desired, in connection with both forms of the invention, there may be employed a priming torch 40 embodying a handle 41 of any desired length having a transverse trough 42 carrying an absorbent packing 48 of asbestos or the like, adapted to be saturated With Wood alcohol or any other inflammable substance.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, a burner having an opening; a separator carried by the burner and located in the opening, the separator dividing the opening into separate air inlets; a nozzledischarging into one air inlet, the separator acting as a deflector for the nozzle; and a fuel conduit communicating With the nozzle and embodying a generator disposed above the burner.
2. In a device of the class described, a burner having an opening; a nozzle discharging into the opening; and a fuel supply pipe communicating with the nozzle, the fuel supply pipe comprising connected generators of different diameters and located at diflerent heights, the generators being disposed above the burner.
3. In a device of the class described, a transversely arched burner provided in one end with a transversely arched separator defining separate air inlets; a nozzle discharging into one inlet, the separator acting as a deflector for the nozzle; and a fuel supply pipe communicating With the nozzle, the fuel supply pipe comprising vertically spaced, connected generators of different diameters located above the burner.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
