Cooperating guides 14 adapted to hold the papers, (as the envelops 15) to be operated on by our mechanism and the typewriter itself, are carried by the respective lateral members and are adapted to guide such papers to the bands under the pressure of the followers 16, spring-pressed for that purpose as shown and having a sliding movement in follower guides-the slots 17 in the guides 14. Each follower has also a slightly rotatable movement on its guide pin 18 when at the rear portion of the slots 17, so that the follower may be thus slightly turned to en gage its part,-the lug 19with a corresponding co-engaging part of the slot,viz., thestop or shoulder 20, thus to hold the follower in its rearward position while papers are being placed in the guides. This follower is so guided as to press the paper-body 21 (viz., the mass of papers held in the guides) against the tangential portion 22 of the band, thus to insure their engagement thereby. To prevent the lifting of the platen relatively to the carriage (as may be done in some typewriters) by the turning of the platen which draws on the rearward portion 42 of the chain, the connected arms 28 are provided, adapted to rock at their free ends relatively to the axes of the platen and the feed-operating shaft respectively, and carrying the chain-engaging roll 2!) as shown. As the drawing tension on the portion 42 of the chain increases, the roll 29 is thereby forced inwardly or forwardly, this straightening the arms to some degree and thereby holding the wheel 26 and the platen from rising. The papers, as the envolops shown, are fed by our mechanism one at a time to the platen, and after being written on by the typewriter, are conveyed by the bands against which they are held by springpressed rolls guides 32 for their edges, and are delivered into a paper holder comprising lateral members 33 carried respectively by the secondary and splined on 31, 43, and through suitable frames lateral members 10. A stop 34, adjustable to accommodate papers of different dimension in the direction of their delivering movement of the paper holder, is adapted to arrest such movement, and is adjusted to a position nearer a portion of the arcuate movement of the band over the uppermost roll 13 than the dimension of the papers in the direction of their delivering movement, so that the lower edge of the papers may, by the engagement of the moving band, be bent backwardly, thus providing an entering space or sufficient clearance 35 for the ready and unobstructed delivery of succeeding papers to the holder. A springpressed retaining member 36 is adapted to retain the paper bcdy 37 in said holder and to yieldingly admit the papers thereto. At the point of the delivery from the band to the paper holder, the papers are (as shown in Fig. 3) deflected from the direction of their previous movement by means of a deflector, (which in the construction shown is the uppermost roll 43), thus insuring their ready introduction into the holder, each successive paper next to the one last introduced.
To readily apply our feeding mechanism to various typewriters, we provide a chuck 38 split to form fingers 39 adapted to receive and hold the end of the platen or its shaft 44. This chuck has a surrounding sleeve 45 whose interior wall is in inclined relation to the fingers. A screw 46 is threaded in the chuck and has a washer 47 holding the bandle 48 in position, and is adapted to move the sleeve longitudinally relatively to the clutch, in order to compress the fingers on the platens shaft. The secondary frames lateral members 10 have T-shaped slots 49, wherein the supporting portions 50 of guides 51 engage; these guides have spring arms 52 and are adapted to be turned in the slots, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 9, to move them out of the way, etc. The followers 16 being pushed back to and held in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, papers (as envelop s 15) are placed in the guides 14, whereupon, the follower being released, they are pressed against the bands. The platen being turned, as in the ordinary operation of the typpewriter, that paper which is engaged by the portion 22 of the bands is slipped off from the rest of the paper body 22 and fed to the platen where it is written on by the typewriter: further rotation of the platen carries this paper by the bands, between the guides 32, and delivers it into the paper holder, and at the same time con vcys other papers to the platen, one at a time.
.Not confining ourselves to details of construction shown or described, we claim:

and bands carried by the corresponding rolls of the two pairs and adapted to engage the papers and move the same relatively to the platen.

In a paper feeding mechanism for a typewriter having a platen,a roll, a band carried by the roll and adapted to engage the papers and convey the same from the. platen, and a paper holder adapted to receive the papers from the band and having a stop adapted to hold the papers against further movement in the direction of their delivering movement to the paper holder, and a springpressed retaining n'iember adapted to retain the paper body in the paper holder and to yieldingly admit the papers to such holder under the action of the band.

In a paper feeding mechanism for a typewriter having a rotatable platen, a movable member adapted to engage the papers and convey them in a predetermined direction from the platen, a paper holder adapted to receive the papers from the movable mem her, and a deflector adapted to deflect the papers from such predetermined direction at the point of their delivery to the paper holder by bending the papers at such point.

In a paper feeding mechanism for a typewriter having a platen, a frame supported in connection with the platen and carrying a shaft and a guide rod both par allel with the platens axis, a secondary frame carried by the shaft and guide rod and comprising lateral members each carry in a gnide and a roll on the shaft, one such roll being splined, bands carried by the rolls and adapted to engage the papers and feed them to the platen, the guides being adapted to hold the papers and guide them to the bands, and one of said lateral members being adjustable on the shaft and guide rod toward and away from the other lateral member. v

In a paper feeding mechanism for a typewriter having a platen, a frame supported in connection with the platen and carrying a shaft and guide rod both parallel with the platens axis, a secondary frame carried by the shaft and guide rod and comprising lateral members each carrying a guide and a roll on the shaft, one such roll being splined, a paper holder comprising lateral members each carried by one of the secondary frames lateral members, bands carried by the rolls and adapted to engage the papers and feed them to the platen, and to convey the papers from the platen to the paper'holder, one of the secondary frames lateral members being adjustable on the' shaft and guide rod toward and away from the other.

In a paper feeding mechanism for a typewriter having a platen, a frame supported in connection with the platen and comprising supports having connecting members, a secondary frame carried by said connecting members, and a movable member carried by the secondary frame and adapted to engage and move the papers relatively to the platen, the said supports being adjustable on the connecting members toward and away from each other.
