V'ULCANIZER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mary 9, 1916.
Application filed November 12, 1915. Serial No. 61,080.
Toall whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Esonas BELLEROSE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Watervliet. in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Vulcanizers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for an object to provide a simple form of vulcanizing device such as is used for vulcanizing the outer casing of automobile tires while upon the wheel.
It is an important object of the invention to provide a construction wherein a dry heat vulcanizer that is to say one that utilizes no liquid or other intermediate means for modifying the action of. the device may be used without liability of burning the rubber.
An additional Object is to provide such a device having a chamber therein formed with an opening, having the double function of limiting the quantity of fuel which may be placed in the device. and also supplying air to the gases arising from the fuel permit ting them to rise readily from the lower part of the device, for combustion principally at a distance above the fuel, as will be made clear from the following disclosure.
Another object is to provide a device which has neither a right nor wrong end. and there will be no need for adjusting a particular end toward the upper or lower side.
A further important aim is to provide a simple construction in such devices where ellicient combustion will be assured, while the heat is properly modulated at the same, time.
Additional objects and advantages will appear from the following description and from the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view of the device in operative position upon a tire while engaged upon a wheel rim, Fig. "l is a horizontal sectional View, Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the device, Fig. 4 is a front view of another embodiment of the device, the shutter being omitted at one side.
There is illustrated a section of a wheel rim 10 upon which the ordinary form of pneumatic tire shoe 11 is engaged, and applied thereto is a vulcanizing device 12. con structed in accordance with my invention,
and comprising one of the possible embodinicnts thereof.
The vulcanizer comprises a. rectangular cast box having av concave back side 13, integral with which are the walls A by which the sides and ends of the box are inciosed, and over these walls in turn there is a front plate 15. The space between the front plate and the back side is open from top to bottom within the box, and if desired a number of ribs or flanges 17 may be formed on the back side. the latter to take up heat given oil by combustion of fuel in the box. On the sides of the box there are formed lugs 18 having suitable openings therethrough in which may be engaged the customary bolts 19, having wing nuts 20 thereon, and a yoke or other suitable wheel engaging device 21 coengaged liietween the bolts.
In the front plate spaced a distance from each end of the box there are formed respective middle openings and s aced slightly a predetermined distance beyond these openings farther from the respective ends of the bacl: and at each side, there are openings 23 approximately the same size as the openings before ll'lfiflblOllQCl. The flanges l7 stop short oi the respective ends of the box a distance, and at each end of the boX there is introduced a suitable body of fibrous material fZ-l, such as asbestos.
in use, a suitable fuel is poured on the as tos at one end of the device until it reaches the level of the adjacent opening 22, and the receptacle is then raised to a vertical position with the fuel at the lower part. The device being secured upon the tire in vertical position as described, a match is then applied to the central opening, which ignites the fuel therein, the burning of which heats the back side of the box to a sufficient extent to vulcanize. the material which may have been placed upon the tire. The central opening serves to admit air for the fuel which mixes with the gas and carries it upward a certain distance, and the side openings serve to supply air to the gas after having moved a distance above the fuel, so that combustion occurs principally at a distance above the fuel, and prevents the development of gas at excessive rate. At ti upper end of the device the openin; ie being spaced a distance below al opening serve to certain amount of gas the es or bets-re combusnon, and before it has exerted its full heating influence upon the upper part of the device, and this prevent-s excessive heating at the upper end of the ap liance.
he important features of this invention consist in the relative arrangement of the central and lateral openings in the front plate. and I have discovered that by arranging these nearer the center of the device. the heat is decreased, while locating them nearer the ends gives an increase in the heating efficiency of the device.
In Fig. 4 there is illustrated a further development of this kind, in which the device is adapted to adjustment for variation of heat producing capacity to meet the requirements of various seasons. As will be readily understood. the device will be used out of doors, and in very cold weather a more rapid production of' heat will be required than in the same situation on a warm summer day. In this case, the front plate is formed with longitudinal slots at each side extended a distance from each end. and on the outer side of the plate there are formed undercut flanges 25, between which there are slidablc shutters zfi. having suitable openings 27 therethrough for the purpose in view. Beside the flanges there may be formed in the plate a series of numbers as 20. i0, (30, 80, progressively from the outer ends of the slots toward the center of the device, in relation to which a small operating finger piece 28 may be formed, serving as a pointer.
' The figures have relation to the variation of atmospheric temperature, and indicate the proper positioning of the shutters for the various heights of temperature indicated. Thus, when the temperature is low,
the shutter should be adjusted toward the outer end of the box whereby an increased heating effect would be produced, whereas in warm weather the shutter should be moved in so that an excessive heat would not be involvedl The simplicity and cheapness of the device will be readily apparent, and its efiiciency has been demonstrated by extensive use. The form of the device may also be varied within the limits of the invention.
An important advantage of the invention is that it provides a device which. while having an inclosed flame and having means for containing liquid fuel, will not require the manipulation of any movable parts in introducing the fuel or lighting the device, and the only movable parts connected with the device or requiring manipulation regularly are those for clamping it upon the rim, or for clamping an article to be vulcanized thereagainst. I
What is claimed:
1. vulcanizer of the class described cornprising a chambered body having an apertured plate thereon. openings therein adjacent each end being spaced a predetermined distance inwardly of the ends of the chamber for the purpose described and openings laterally and inwardly thereof adjacent each end for the purposes described, and means for holding an article to be vulcanized.
2. vulcanizer of the class described comprising a chambered body having a front plate formed with central openings for the purposes described, longitudinal slots laterally of the opening. sliding shutters over the slots and intermediate apertures therein.
In testimony whereof I have atlixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
