Description

L. KA'UFFELD. APPARATUS FOR TREATING ARTICLES 0? GLASSWARE.
APPLICATION FILED MAYBE, l9!5- Patented May 2, 1916.

Specification oi Letters 1: dtellt.
ll ritentetl May it, lllli To all whom it may concern Be it known that l. l'ioms linu rrinn. n citizen of the United States, and a resident of Star City, in the c t nnty of lllonongnlio and State ot -ll est Virginian have invented a. new and lHlPlOVtKl Apporatns for 'lrenting; Articles of Glass are. otivhich the following is a full. "leer, and exact description.
My invention relates more pnrtii'rulnrly an apparatus for treating; lamp chimneys and similar articles requiring the hosting? of the edges thereof", the apparatus being of that type in which provision is made for giving the gloss articles :1 revolving move-- on their own axes, whereby to prevent collapsing of the edges when heated.
Objects of the invention are to provide improved means whereby the articles will be carried through the furnace on wheels so arranged that the frictional contact oi. the Wheels with the articles will give the desired turning movement to the letter.
The invention will be particularly ere plcinod in the specific description following.
Reference is bad to the acmimpnnying drawings forming part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference in dicate corresponding parts in all the views, 21nd in Which l igure 1 is o longitudinal vertical. section on the line 11 of l 2; and Fig. 2 is n crosssectien on the line 2-2l, 1.
In carrying out my invention in accordance with the illustrated erasmph-3 a, tnrnncc 10, cl any approved general construction, is provided open for the passnge therethrongh of the articles to be treated. lo the illns trsited form the furnace is provided with elongated. burners ll to receive feel one; and having upwardly disposed jet orifices 153. At the sides of the furnace 10 tracks 14L ere provided spaced apart, the tracks being preterably channeled and being supported in the present instance on brackets 13 carried by the Walls of the furnace.
My improved carrying; means for the orticles, which may be lamp chimneys it or similar articles, consists of s ccnveyer 15, preferably an endless chain" lShe chain '15 runs around sprockets 16, one of the shafts 17 of which may be driven by any snitnble means (not shown). The chain 15 is provided with Wheels 18, and these are sold-- ciently close together so that the peripheries of two adjacent Wheels will form n rest for n gloss article In the illustrated construction two sets of wheels 18 are employed, the sets oi wheels running on the respective tracks 1-5: and n pair oi wheels being inonnted on. a transverse axle 29 carried by the chain 1:). The upper rim of the. chain disposes the wheels in position to take the trucks l-l. and upon entering the tracks the contact of the wheels 18 therewith will turn the said wheels on their individual zines will. be readily nndwstood. The glass nrtieles A are placed on the npperriin of the chain before it enters the furnace 10, each article resting on the peripheries oi adjacent Wheels. Thus the frictional engagement of the wheels 18 at their peripheries with the glass articles A will cause the said art cles to be revolved about their own ttXBS. The turning of the glass articles will thus prevent the edges thereof, mode molten nnder the influence ot' the burner ill, from collapsing or becoming deformed.
The employment of the Wheels for lfrie tionally turning; the gloss articles permits of the articles being readily placed and re moved, end the eil'ective revolving motion of the articles is insured.
lit is to be observed that the Walls of the furnace overhang; the tracks and conveyor at the top and that the Wells serve to retain the heat in the furnace about the bodies oil chimneys so that the letter ore generally heated in addition to the direct high. heat to which the edges are subjected by the burnor thereby preventing cracking due to disparity of heat fill} the ed lChe described const 11 "ion ntl'ords n practical means for cirrying; my invention into effect, and would state in conclusion that l do not limit rnysel'l strictly to the me chenicsl form of" the machine as illustrated, since manifestly the some can be considen nhly varied Without departure from the spirit oil the invention, as defined in the appended claims in ett'ecti-ng the operation of simultaneously rotating the articles by means of their direct trictionnl. engagement with revolving traveling elements.
thus described my invention, what I claim new and desire to secure by Letters Prnficnt is:
1. An apparatus for treating; glass arti cles, comprising a traveling conv" yer having" means to support and turn articles to be treated, said means comprising Wheels on tlliv Ell the conveyer and traveling therewith, said Wheelsheing arranged so that the periphcries of adjacent wheels constitute a rest for an article to be treated, means to turn the wheels and thereby revolve the articles on their own axes by frictional engagement with the revolving Wheels, a furnace through which the conve'yer travels, the walls of the furnace serving to subject the complete articles to heat while traveling and turning, and burners disposed in the furnace at the sides of said Wheels in position to heat the articles at the edges.
2. An apparatus for treating glass articles, comprising a traveling conveyer, actuating means therefor, a relatively fixed furnace through which said conveyer travels, :1-
In testimony whereof I have subscribed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LOUIS KAUFFELD.
