While the plastic compositions abovedo scribed *have' been found to be practical and efficient for the purpose set forth, it is to be understood, however, that our invention is; not limited to these products, but includes any plastic material having the properties of being leather adherent and contr -active. upon drying, the particular compositions to which reference has been :made being illustrative but not restrictive.

While the treatment of the skived edge ofzthe leatl r with a contractive plastic composition asf aboyevdescribed isordi'narily su'llicie'nt to produoea perfect finished edge, it is found that some classes of leather 'are- 'less'susceptible to, the fcontractive action or the plastic composition, and that in others so there isa lack of uniformity in the character or ',a variation-,inporosity of different portions of the same piece'.- In such cases the" alinement'and the uniform curvature of the finished edge may be insured by applying 5 pressureto the'same' by means of adie or preferably by the, progressive application 'of"'pressure by an edge forming machine. such as that above described, (or by passing the. edge of the leatherythrough an edge r rounding machine). So far as the securing of the proper ahnement and curvature of the edge is-concerned it is not necessary that the tool or wheel 9 of the machine described shall mo a faster than the fried of the leather 55 edge.
