METHOD OF MAKING BELT-LOOPS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHESTER MCNEIL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of Making Belt-Loops, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the figures of refer ence marked thereon.

My invention relates to methods of making straps, and more especially straps which are utilized as belt loops for trousers.

In its application to belt loops the object scraps of material of which the garment is made and to form the same by folding in the side portions along a longitudinal line so thatthey substantially abut at the center of the body fabric, the side portions being secured together and to the body portion by stitches which do not show on the face of the completed article. Cross threads also may he provided as part of the stitches which secure the stitches and also bind the raw edges of the material.

The invention therefore primarily consists in folding the side portions of a strip of material. so that they abut one another in the center of the fabric, and then passing rows of loops through one of the folded side portions into M through the other folded side portion and securing said loops of thread.

As shown in Fig. 1, the strap has side portions 2 and 3 folded back upon the body portion of the strap and said side portions 2 and 3 have their edges abutted or meeting as If a belt loop for trousers is to be made, I take scraps of the material of which the trousers are made, and cut them into the desired width and fold them as above stated.

In passing the loops 5 through the folded strip, I bend the latter as shown in Fig. 1 and with a curved or straight needle the loops'5 may be passed through the folded in portions and the body fabric in the man ner above described.

Instead of using a thread which is in loop form and arranged as herein shown, for locking with the loops embeddedin the strip. it is evident that any other style of cross t t ing may be used, the featur article made according to my invention be ing that certain. threads are passed through the foldeddn portion and the body of the strip, while other threads are laid across the ineetin" edges. These cross threads serve to cover t e meeting edges and form a neatly finished belt loop. The embedded threads not only connect the folded'in edges and serve as a means for tying the cross threads but they also tie the folded in portions to the body portion of the strip, so that a flat belt loop of substantially unitary structure is formed.

In Fig. 5 the cross stitching is omitted, as well as in Fig. 6; in the latter figure the portions 2 and 3 beings-gain folded as at 9 and 10 so as to cause the meeting edges to be folded edges, thus binding the raw edges between the portions 2, 3 and the body portion of the strap.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. The herein described method of forming straps or belt loops which consists in initially folding the side portions longitudinally back against the central or body portions with their edges substantially abutting at the central line of the body portion and then passing loops of threads through one of said folded side portions, entering the central bod portion and passing through the other fo ded side portion, as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The herein described method of forming straps or belt loops which consists in initially folding the side portions lcngitudi nallv back against the central or body p01 tion with their edges substantially abutting at the central line of the body portion and then passing loops of thread through one of said folded side portions, entering the central body portion and passing through the other folded side portion and then securing the loops by cross threads which extend across between the edges of the folded side portions and overlie and cover the abutting edges of the folded in side portions, as and for the purpose set forth.
