To all whom it may concern Be it known that LARTHUR C. HARRING- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monon, in the county of White and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Welding-Dies, of which the following is a Specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in tools or appliances for use in metal forging and welding, and relates particularly to an improved die in the nature of a combined vise and anvil for use in welding toe calks to horseshoes.
To those familiar with the art to which this invention appertains, it is well known that blacksmiths ordinarily experience difficulty in welding toe calks to shoes owing to the fact that if the calk is hammered upon to affix it to the shoe, the edge thereof will become dulled, and it is the primary object of my invention to provide .a useful and eflicient construction of device, by the use of which the back of the shoe can be hammered upon, and not the edge of the calk, in securing the two parts together, whereby all liability of dulling the edge of the calk will be precluded.
The invention has for a further object an improved device of this kind embodying jaws which are adjustable one toward the other to form between them a V-shaped opening or recess of any desired width, according to the thickness of the calk, whereby the device will be of universal application in fastening welded toe calks to horseshoes. And the invention also aims to generally improve devices of this class so as to render them more useful and commercially desirable.
WVith these and other objects in view, as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter more fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which,

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in all of the views of the accompanying drawing by like reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the base of my improved die, said base being preferably formed of cast metal and having depending therefrom legs 2 which are preferably formed of malleable 1IOI1 or steel or of some other metal that will bend to fit or to be bolted securely to a post without breaking, the legs being formed with openings 3 to receive the bolts or similar fastening devices, whereby the device may be securely supported near the forge fire.
A relatively stationary jaw 41 rises from the base 1 at one end of the latter and is preferably formed integral therewith, the other end of the basebeing formed with a recess 5 in which fits a knuckle 6 formed on the lower end of the movable jaw 7. The knuckle 6 is .apertured, as is the recessed end of the base 1, to receive the pivot bolt 8 which is designed to be secured in place by a cotter pin or the like, as clearly illustrated in the drawing.
Each of the jaws 4 and 7 is formed with an aperture 9 extending transversely therethrough, and a tension bolt 10 is accommodated in said apertures, an expansion spring being coiled around the bolt between the jaws and exerting a tension thereon to move the jaw 7 away from the jaw 4. A wing nut 12 or the like is screwed upon the protruding threaded end of the bolt 10, whereby the jaw 7 may be moved toward the jaw 4 against the expansive action of the spring 11.
It is to be particularly noted that the upper ends of the jaws 4 and 7 are substantially flat, as indicated at 13, so as to form a convenient support for the horseshoe in the welding operation, and that the vertical edges of the laterally turned upper ends of the jaws are beveled or inclined upwardly and outwardly in opposite directions, as indicated at 14, whereby a substantially V shaped opening or recess will be formed between the jaws, the recess being susceptible of lateral enlargement or diminution, according to the adjustment of one jaw relative to the other, whereby toe calks of different widths or thicknesses can be accommodated by the device.
From the. foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, the operation of my improved die or anvil will be apparent. In the practical use of the device, the jaws are adjusted according to the thickness of the calk to be welded on, and is laterally received within the recess 15 formed between the jaws and the back of the shoe hammered upon to weld the calks thereto, it being evident that by this mode of operation, all danger of blunting the sharp edge of the toe call: will be positively prevented. Furthermore, it is to be noted that the base 1 is formed with a V- shaped trough 16, between the jaws and in substantially vertical alinement with the recess 15, whereby the device will be practically self-cleaning and not get clogged up with scales or dirt, as the jaws are separated and will allow all scales to pass through and to drop into the V-shaped trough 16 and from thence to the floor.
\Vhile the accompanying drawing illustrates what I believe to be the preferred embodiment of-1ny invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto, but that various changes may be made in the construction, arrangements and proportions of the parts without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
What is claimed, is:
A device for use in welding toe calks to horseshoes, the same comprising a base formed with downwardly extending laterally spaced parallel legs, a stationary jaw carried by the base at one end thereon and extending upwardly therefrom, the base being formed at its other end with a recess forming aperturecl spaced lugs, a movable jaw extending upwardly from the base and formed atits lower end with an apertured knuckle, a pivot bolt extending through the recessed end of the base and through said knuckle, each of said jaws being formed with an aperture extending transversely therethrough, in substantially horizontal alinement one with the other, an adjusting bolt mounted in said apertures, an expansion spring coiled around said bolt between said jaws and bearing against the same, an adjusting nut mounted on one end of said bolt and bearing against the movable jaw, the upper ends of said jaws being turned inwardly toward each other and formed in their opposing edges with beveled surfaces inclined upwardly and outwardly in opposite directions forming a substantially V- shaped recess between said jaws, said recess being susceptible of lateral enlargement or diminution according to the adjustment of one jaw relative tothe other, and the base being formed below said recess and in substantiallyvertical alinement therewith, with a V-shaped trough as and for the purpose set forth.
