In advance of the lateral portion the train pipe is held under spring tension, through the medium of a spring 28 encircling the same and bearing at the inneraend against a hanger 29 dependent from the car body and at the forward end against the collar 30 carried by the train pipe proper. This insures a suiiicient tension on the trainpipe when the couplers are connected to maintain a tight connection.
The operation of the coupler will be apparent from the' drawing, it being understood that as the heads approach they will be guided into alining positions and the movement continued until the ends of the casings are engaged by the clamps 13 and the lever 15 operated to open the valves. An automatic air coupler comprising a coupling head having an inclined bear ing face, the air pipe opening through said face, a guide plate and clamp members carried by the head to receive and engage the opposing head, a valve in the air pipe, a le ver for operating the valveand a dog carried by the head to engage the lever of the opposing head in the operation ofthe head to close the valve, a band carrying the dog, said band being engaged by the lever in the coupling movement of the heads to open the valve, said band and dog being spaced apart to permit the slight operating movement of the heads without affecting the dog.
4. An automatic air coupler comprising a coupling head having an inclined hearing face, the air pipe opening through said face, a guide plate and clamp members carried by the head to receive and engage the opposing head, a band carried by the guide Y CHARLES H. MONROE.
