To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AsHER LAMBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at 1 Johnson avenue, Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clutch-Shifters for Overhung Winches, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
This invention relates to a special means for shifting a clutch-collar or coupling upon the overhung end of a drum-shaft, carrying a winch-drum to operate a loosely wrapped rope.
The drum-shafts in a power-hoister are carried near their opposite ends by bearings mounted upon the frame of a hoister, and the present invention consists of a clutch shifting-device mounted upon the cap of the bearing from which the shaft is overhung to carry the winch. The winch is mounted rotatably upon the shaft at a sufficient distance from the bearing to introduce a sliding clutch-collar to engage clutch-teeth upon the adjacent end of the winch. A collar is provided upon the outer end of the shaft to limit the outward movement of the winchdrum, and inward movement is prevented by keys or feathers fitted in the shaft between the end of the winch and the bearing, such keys driving the clutch-collar when engaged with the winch.
The improved means of shifting the clutch-collar consists of guides upon the cap of the shaft-bearing, with a shifter-bar mounted movably therein, parallel with the drum-shaft and having a connection with the clutch-collar, a notched segment projected upwardly from the guides, a handlever pivoted upon the segment with latch to engage the notches, and connected to the shifter-bar, the notches operating to hold the clutch-collar in its operative and inoperative positions respectively.
The invention will be understood by reference to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of the drum-shaft with winch mounted thereon, the shell of the winch being shown in section, and the clutch shifting devices mounted upon the cap of the bearings; Fig. 2 is a side view of the cap of the bearing with the shifter-bar and hand-lever; Fig. 3 is a side view of the shifter-bar and the fork upon its end with the cap and its attached fixtures shown in Specification of Letters Patent.

A represents part of the side-frame of a power-hoister with bearing B mounted thereon and provided with detachable cap The drum-shaft C- is shown in Fig. 1, with a drum D just inside of the bearing, and is projected outside of the bearing to carry the winch E. A disk F is attached to the end of the shaft to hold the winch thereon, and keys 6/. are inserted as feathers in the opposite sides of the shaft to drive the clutch-collar G, and serve also to hold the winch against the disk F. Clutch-teeth H are formed upon the end of the winch next to the clutch-collar to be engaged thereby when it is desired to rotate the winch. The cap B of the bearing has two guides I upon its upper side with a shifter-bar J movable lengthwise therein parallel with the drumshaft C, the outer end of the bar J having a fork J fitted to a groove K in the clutchcollar G.
A segment-plate L is extended upward from the guides I and a hand-lever M is pivoted thereon by bolt 19, and its lower end connected to the shifter-bar by a stud c. In practice, this lower end is slightly slotted where it is fitted to the stud c, to compensate for the curved movement of such end. The segment is formed with notches d, d, and the hand-lever is provided with a spring-latch e having a latch-handle f to operate the same. The clutch-collar G may thus be moved into and out of engagement with the clutch-teeth H upon the winch by moving the hand-lever M, and the collar Gr may be locked in either of such positions by the engagement of the latch with the notches d and d respectively.
The formation of the guides I and segment-plate L integral with the cap B of the drum-shaft-bearing, produces the cheapest possible construction for mounting a clutch-shifter upon the bearing; the handlever M being also sustained, by this construction, in the most convenient position for an operator standing by the winch.
Fig. 3 shows in dotted lines the cap of the bearing and the guides formed integral therewith, the shifter-bar and its fork being shown in full lines. Fig. I also shows the cap of the bearing with all of the parts Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the clutch-teeth next the bearing, a toothed clutch-collar movable between the winch and the bearing, and clutch-shifting mechanism provided with a hand-lever mounted wholly upon the removable cap of the bearing in a central position thereon, with a connection to the clutch-collar to actuate the same, the cap withsuch clutch-shifting mechanism being detachable from the bearing, as and for the purpose set forth.
