PAPER-BAG MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2, 1916.
Application filed September 28, 1914. Serial No. 863,864.
This invention relates to paper bag machines and particularly to the rear-fiap-folders thereof.
The object of my improvements is to provide a mechanism of simple construction and of high reliability and accuracy for the pur pose specified.
To these ends my improvements comprise means illustrated in their preferred form in the drawings accompanying this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is an end elevation of so much of a paper bag machine as will suflice to illustrate my improved mechanism. Fig. 2 is a side elevation corresponding with the showing of Fig. 1. Figs. 3, 1 and 5 are fragmentary side elevations similar to a part of what is shown in Fig. 2, and illustrating successive steps in the operation of my improved mechanism.
The present mechanism is illustrated as contributing to the making of the well known self-opening-square paper bag, formed of a tube having an inwardly folded tuck in each side thereof. Said tube has previously had the leading end thereof opened out and folded down into the usual diamond form. and has been provided with cross creases on which the front and rear flaps are to be folded over onto the bag bottom. Also said front flap has been supplied with gum.
The usual rotary folding bed or cylinder 2. fixed to shaft 3, is provided with side clips as 5, 6 for holding the partly folded bag blank 7 thereto. Cylinder shaft 3 is provided with bearings in side frames 8 and 9 and has fixed thereto gear 10 meshing with gear 11 fixed to shaft 12 carrying roll 13. Gear 11, through intermediate gear 14 on stud 15. meshes with gear 16 fixed to shaft 17. Said shaft 17 carries rear-fiap-folding fingers 18 and 19 mounted thereon for orbital movement adjacent to the path of the folding-bed. Said folding fingers 18 and 19 are pivotally mounted in the outer end of arm 20, being fixed to oscillating rod 21. One end of said rod has fixed thereto arm 22 bearing roll 23 for engagement with fixed cam 24: mounted coaxially with shaft 17. Spring 25 is eflicient for urging roll 23 to engagement with cam 2 1. By the means just described, said fingers, in their orbital movement about the axis of shaft 17 are caused to recede from and approach said .shaft'17 and thereby traverse a path closely adjacent to the path of the folding bed. Arm 20 is mounted for free rotation on shaft 17 but is constrained to predetermined oscillation thereon by the followingmeans: Fixed to shaft 17 oppositely adjacent to arm 20 are arms 26 and 27 respectively carrying rock-shaft 28. Said rock-shaft has fixed thereto arm 29 bearing roll 30 for engagement with second fixed cam 31 mounted coaxially with shaft 17. Also fixed to rock-shaft 28 is arm 32 having pin 33 thereof in engagement with radially extending member 34 of arm 20. Said member 34 is preferably bifurcated and carries sliding block 35 having a hole therein for said pin 33. Roll 30 is constrained to engagement with cam 31 by spring 36 on rockshaft 28.
For folding the front flap of the bag bottom I have shown fixed folder 37 carried by rod 38 all Of well known character.
The operation of my improved flap-foldore is as follows: A diamond folded bag blank 7 being secured to the folding-bed on cylinder 2 by clips as 5 and 6 and that cylinder being rotated in the direction of its arrow, just before the several parts of the mechanism reach the positions of Fig. 2 flap- folders 18 and 19 will have been oscillated outwardly from shaft 17, whereby they will be able to pass behind rear-flap 7 of blank 7. It will be understood that rearfiap 7 and front-flap 7 having previously been creased for folding, will stand away somewhat from cylinder 2. Roll 23 will then mount the high part of cam 24 whereby folders 18, 19 will be withdrawn toward shaft 17 (Fig. 3) to engagement with flap 7 close to the folding-bed of cylinder 2. and from the position of Fig. 3 to that of Fig. a said folders will traverse a path closely adjacent to the path of said foldingbed. At the same time roll 30 mounts the incline of cam 31 whereby arm 20 is accelerated in speed over the speed of shaft 17 and folders 18, 19 are caused to travel fasterthan the folding-bed thereby folding down said flap 7* onto the bag bottom. While this ortion of the operation is in progress, ront flap 7 b Will encounter fixed folder 37 (Fig. 3) and be folded over onto the bag bottom, the mechanism being so timed that said front-flap 7 will be folded on top of Roll 23 then again passes to a high part of. cam 24: whereby folders 18, 19 are retracted toward shaft 17 and away from the folding-bed (Fig. The leading end of the folded bag then passes into the bite of cylinder 2 and roll 18 and thereafter the bag may be discharged from the machine. Folders l8, l9 then'pass onwardly around shaft 17 and be: fore again reaching the position of Fig. 2, their speed is reduced by the descent of roll to a' low part of cam 31, when said fold,- ers are ready to be again accelerated in op,- erating upon the neXt bag blank.
I claim:
1. In a paper bag machine the eombinae tion of a rotating folding-bed, means for holding a bag blank thereon, pair of rear-v flap-folders mounted for orbital movement adjacent to the path of the folding-bed,
means for causing said l'eanfiap-folders during part of their movement to traverse a path closely adjacent to the path of the folding-bed, and means for increasing the speed of said folders during their movement adjacent to said folding-bed path.
2. In a paper bag machine the combination of a rotating'folding-bed, means for holding a bag blank thereon, a pair of rearflap-folders mounted for oscillation about a common axis, 'said axis being moullted for revolution about a fixed axis adjacent to the path of the folding-bed, means for oscillating said folders, means for revolving said folders about the fixed axis, and means for changing their speed of revolution about said fixed axis.
3. In a paper bag machine the combination of a rotating folding-bed, means for holding a bag blank thereon, a pair of rearfiap-folders, an arm on which said rear-flap folders are pivotally mounted, a shaft on which said arm is mounted for free rota tion, means for rotating said shaft at a constant speed, a fixed cam coaxial with said shaft, means carried by said flaps-folders for engagement with said cam for oscillating said folders on their pivot, a second fixed cam coaxial ith said shaft, and means carried by said shaft, for oscillating said arm from said second cam whereby the speed of said arm is increased and decreased relatively to the speed of rotation of said shaft.
4;. In a paper bag machine thecombinaon of a ota ng folding-b d, mea for holding a bag blank thereon, a pair of rear.- flapefolders, an arm on which said rear-flapfolders are carried, a shaft on which said m is unt d r fre a on, mean for rotating said shaft at a constant speed, a xed tam c ax al w t a d af an means carried by said shaft for oscillating said arm from said cam whereby the speed of said arm is increased and decreased relatively to the speed of rotation of said shaft.
