Description

I. NEWMAN.
- FINGER NAIL CUTTER.
APPLICATION man MAY 4. 1915.

ISIDOR NEWMAN, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
FINGER-N AIL CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 4, 1915. Serial N 0. 25,662.
in the county of the Bronx and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Finger-Nall Cutters, of which the following is a speclfication.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient cutter for finger nails, wherein the cutting edges are protected, and are of such shape as to produce smooth or rounded edges on the finger-nails.
A further object of my in vention is to provide a rotative cutter head having a plurality of cutting edges. a handle supporting said head, and a member upon the handle adapted to retain the head in set position.
y invention further comprises novel details of improvement and combinations of parts that will be more fully hereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein,
Figure l is a side cutter embodying my larged scale; Fig. 2 is 2, 2, in Fig. 1; Fig. 3
view of a finger-nail invention, on an en a section on the line is an enlarged sec- 3, in Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4, 4, in Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is an edge view of the cutter head of Fig. 4; and Fig. 5 is a detail edge view of the cutter head. I
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
In accordance with my improvements I provide a cutter head 1 of suitable metal, having a recess or groove 2 on its periphery or edge, adapted to receive the finger-nail,
and at 3 I provlde openings extending transversely through said head, an edge of each of which openings opens through the bottom of groove or recess 2, as at 3*, providing cutting edges at 4 in the bottom of the groove or recess. In forming the cutti g edges I provide the recess or groove 2 in a relatively thin piece of metal adapted for head 1, and I drill or punch the holes or openings 3 through said metal, in such position with respect to the bottom of recess or groove 2 that the portion 3 ofthe opening 3 will merge with said recess or groove as by breaking through the metal into the recess or groove to provide the edges 4. The recess or groove is made curved or rounded at the bottom, whereby the cutting edges are given a curved form on their sides so that they will cut the edges of the finger-nail smoothly and in a rounded manner to avoid burs on their edge, and in a manner to rub down the edges of the nail. The openings or holes 3, by leading through the side walls of head 1 afford means for ready escape of the pieces of finger-nail as cut off.
In the form shown in Figs. 1 to 4, I provide a handle 5 having spaced jaws 5 between which the head 1 is fitted to rotate upon a pivot or pin 5. handle 5 is a slidable to act in the nature of a brake by bearing against head 1. The brake member 6 is shown slidably retained in the handle by means of the pin and slot connection at 7, 8. At 9 is a threaded plug having threads meshing with threads 10 in the handle, which plug is adapted to bear against brake member 6 to force the latter against head 1. lVhenthe device is to be used, the plug 9 is screwed back to release the brake member 6, the head 1 may then be rotated to bring the desired sized opening 3 with the corresponding cutting edges 4, in convenient position for operating on the fingernail, and plug 9 may then be screwed back to cause member 6 to bear upon head 1 to retain it in set position. Plug 9 is shown provided with a projecting portion suitably shaped at 9 to act cleaning under the member 6 adapted finger-nails, which portion of the plug is adapted to fit within the bore 6" of brake member 6.
As shown in Figs. 2 and 3 a portion .of head 1 is circular with respect to a plurality of holes or openings 3, and another portion thereof is flat or straight edged at 1 with respect to another one of the holes or openings 3, whereby the head is particularly adapted at the curved portion to cut the corners of the finger-nail, while the fiat or straight portion 1 is particularly adapted to out the main parts of the nail. My improvements are useful for trimming or cutting toe-nails as well as finger-nails.
My improvements are simple and cheap to manufacture, efficient in use, and may be made in small compass to enable the same tobe carried in the pocket or conveniently handled.
While I have shown a plurality of open- Paeemea May 2, rate.
WVithin the bore of i as a tool, such as for ings affording the corresponding cutting edges i in conjunction with the recesses or grooves 2 of head 1, it willbe understood that the said head may be provided with oneormore of such openings and corre' sponding cutting edges as may be desired.
Having now described my invention what I claim is 1. A nail cutter comprising a head having an opening, and having a peripheral recess merging with said opening providing cutting edges within said recess, a handle pivotally supporting said nail cutter, said handle' having a bore, a brake movable within said bore adapted to coact withsaid head, means to slidably retain the member within the handle, and means to cause said brake member to bear against said head to hold the latter in positions of adjustment.
2. A. nail cutter comprising a head having an opening and having a peripheral recess merging with said opening providing cutting edges within said recess, a handle pivotally supporting said nail cutter, said handle having a bore, a brake member slidable within said bore adapted to engage said head, said brake member having a bore, and a plug having threads vadapted to mesh with threads in the handle and engage said brake member to push the same against said head, said plug having a toollike portion at its inner end located within the bore of said brake member.
Signed at New York city, in the county of New York, and State of New York, this 3rd day of May, A. D. 1915.
