- Our invention relates to means for afl'ording and controlling lateral motion in the driving boxes of locomotive engines, and its object is to provide a construction in which the resistance of springs may be exerted not only to oppose lateral motion, but also to transfer the lateral pressure upon the boxes of one pair of driving wheels to the adjacent pair of driving boxes, so that two adjacent driving axles being fitted with lateral motion driving boxes, approximately equal reaction will be exerted against each of the driving boxes and driving wheels. LATERAL-MOTION APPLIANCE FOR LOCOMOTIVE DRIVING-BOXES.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it'known that we, WILLIAM E. VVoon- Ann, of Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady and State of New York, and SAMUEL S. RIEGEL, of Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have jointly invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lateral- Motion Appliances for Locomotive Driving-Boxes, of which improvement the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to means for afl'ording and controlling lateral motion in the driving boxes of locomotive engines, and its object is to provide a construction in which the resistance of springs may be exerted not only to oppose lateral motion, but also to transfer the lateral pressure upon the boxes of one pair of driving wheels to the adjacent pair of driving boxes, so that two adjacent driving axles being fitted with lateral motion driving boxes, approximately equal reaction will be exerted against each of the driving boxes and driving wheels. As a result, no excess lateral pressure will be exerted upon either one of the two driving axles.
The improvement claimed is hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view, partly in section, of portions of two locomotive side frame members and two driving axles and their driving boxes, illustrating an application of our invention; Fig. 2, a view, partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section on the line 9 g of Fig. 1; and, Fig. a view, partly in elevation and partly in section, the left hand half being a vertical transverse section, taken at the middle of a pedestal, and the right hand half, a similar section on the line h k of Fig. 1.
Our invention is herein exemplified as applied in connection with a locomotive engine. the frame of which is of the standard bar type, and comprises two side members, which are. as in present standard practice, spaced at the maximum distance apart available under the necessary limitation imposed by the width between driving wheel hubs. Each of the side frame members comprises so far as the portion thereof in which the driving axles are fitted is concerned, the usual top rail, 1, bottom rail, 2, and connecting vertical pedestals, each of which consists of a pair of pedestal jaws, 3, in which one of the end portions of a driving box, 4, is fitted between a Wedge,

driving axles, 8, 8, in connection with which the invention is applied, are fitted, with the capacity of lateral motion, between wedges, 4 and shoes, 4, which are disposed in the usual manner in the pedestal aws, 3, of the frame. The side frame members are connected, midway between the axles, by a cross tie, 19, which is secured to the top rails by bolts, 19*, and to the bottom rails, by bolts, 19*. Two horizontal equalizing beams, 20, 20, are fitted in guide ways in the cross tie, each of said beams extending from one of the driving boxes of one axle to the adjacent driving box of the other axle, and bearing against the inner ends of said driving boxes, through blocks, 20, secured detachably, to its ends. The middle portions of the equalizers bear against the outer ends of the guide Ways of the cross tie, in which the equalizing beams are fitted. A plurality of helical springs, 21, is fitted in the cross tie, between the equalizing beams, said springs abutting, at their ends. on seats, 21, fitted in recesses in. and abutting against, said beams.
Lateral movement of the driving boxes, from their normal positions relatively to the frame members, is resisted bv the springs, 21,-which bear on the side frame members through the equalizing beams and cross ties, and by reason of the application of this resistance to the driving boxes desirable for insuring the most effective operation in practice, is not, however, essential.
Ive claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a locomotive engine, tion of two side frame members; two pairs of driving boxes, each of the members of which is fitted with the capacitv of relative vertical and lateral movements in one of said frame members; two driving axles, each journaled in one of the pairs of driving boxes; driving wheels fixed on said driving axles; means for exerting horizontally acting spring resistance to oppose lateral movement of the dri ing boxes; and means for transmitting lateral pressure from the boxes of one driving axle to those of the other.
2. In a locomotive engine, the combination of two side frame members; two pairs of driving boxes, each of the members of which is fitted with the capacity of relative vertical and lateral movements in one of said frame members; two driving axles, each journaled in one of the pairs of driving boxes; driving whee-ls fixed on said the com'binadriving axles; two equalizing beams, each bearing at its ends on a driving box of each of the driving axles and bearing intermediately on the adjacent frame member,
and springs interposed between and bear-V ing on the equalizing beams.
3. In a locomotive engine, the combination of two side frame members; two pairs of driving boxes, each of the members of which is fitted with the capacity of relative vertical and lateral movements in one of said frame members; two driving axles, each journaled in one of the pairs of driving boxes; driving wheels fixed on said driving axles; a crosstie connecting the side frame members intermediate of said driving axles; two equalizing beams, each bearing at its ends on a driving box of each of the driving axles and bearing intermediatcly on the cross tie; and springs interposed between and bearing on the equalizing beams WILLIAM E.
