Description

F. S. WHITLOCK.
WIRE CLAMP TOOL.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 4, 1915.
Patented May 2,1916.
FRANK S WHITLOCK, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
WIRE-CLAMP TOOL.
Application flied September 4, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK S. Wnrrnocn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of \Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wire-Clamp Tools, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a tool for the fastening of wire clamps upon a hose.
The primary ob]ect of the invention is the provision of a tool of this character wherein the wire for the clamping of the nipples for a nozzle or coupling in a hose is conveniently clamped upon the latter with despatch irrespective of the size of the hose, the device being also adaptable for the putting of double wire hoops upon a barrel or the like.
Another object of the invention is the rovision of a tool of this character whic is novel in construction to enable the firm and secure fastening of the wire clamp to the hose without possibility of the slipping of the wire during the fastening thereof.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a tool of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose, strong, durable, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of arts as will be hereinafter fully described. illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the tool constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view therethrough. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view through a hose showing the wire clamp engaged therewith and the tool in position for stretching the wire in the fastening of the same upon the hose. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the final position of the clamp after fastening the ends of the wire.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in t e drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the tool comprises a handle 5, preferably of Specification of Letters Patent.

tubiform and made from metal, having mounted thereon at one end a head 6 provided with a bearing fork 7 supporting a pivot 8 which is passed through an eccentric cam 9 having a lever 10 for actuating the same, the cam 9 being provided with teeth 11 extending the entire width thereof for the positive gripping of the ends of a wire clamp 12 which is of U-shape and of the ordinary well-known construction. Suitably swiveled for rotation in the opposite end of the handle 5 is a winged nut 13 engaged upon a feed screw stem 1-1 passed through the handle 5 and terminating in a slidable jaw 15 which is formed with a notch 16 providing a seat for the closed end of the wire clamp 12 after it has been wrapped about the hose A in the usual welllmown manner with the free ends of the wire passed through the closed end thereof so that the said free ends of the wire can be engaged by the locking cam 9 for the stretching or pulling taut of the wire clamp 12 about the hose, and therefore on turning the tool over from the position shown in Fig. 3 to the position shown in Fig. 4 the said clamp can be securely fastened upon the hose.
Formed in the fork 7 medially thereof is a lug 17 which is used when employing an endless loop form wire clamp so that one closed end can engage in the seat 16 while the other closed end thereof can engage the lug so that the wire clamp can be stretched or drawn taut about the hose and thereafter fastened thereto by the use of the tool.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and manner of operation of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is z- A wire clamp tool comprising a tubiform member providing a handle. a centrally apertured head mounted on one end of the member and formed with spaced ears, the central aperture in the head being in alinement with the bore in the member, a terminally notched bar slidable through the member, a cam member pivoted between the clamping wire lengths therebetween, means swiveled in the member and adjustably engaging the bnr to extend or retract the same, and :1 lug protruding from the flat rest of Copies of this patent may be obtained for Me cents each. by addressing the the head and curved upwardly and inwardly at one side of the cam of the lever.
In testimon whereof I afiix my signature in presence 0 two witnesses.
