To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, MARK THOMAS DENNE, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Rushden, Northamptonshire, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Heel- Building Machines, of which the followingis a specification. i
This invention has reference to improvements in and relating to heel building machines, and its main objects are to enable substantially any variety of heel to be nailed by the use of one and the same nail block; to enable the nail drivers and their carrier to be so adjusted relatively to the nail block that the nail points will be just flush or might be made to actually slightly project beyond the top surface of the nail block no matter what length of nail be used (of course within the compass of the machine) to provide means whereby the machine may be made to be driven for a single revolution or cycle of its operation; to provide a heel building machine having in combination a stationary nail block and a top pad carrier and a heel mold carrier, said two carriers being movable transversely 1n opposite directions relatively to the nail block so that both the nail block (or a blinder plate thereon, to be described) and the heel mold will be freely accessible for having the nails and the heel lifts fed or loaded into them respectively by the operator.
My invention comprehends means whereby the aforesaid objects may be attained and also improved mechanism whereby certain practical advantages in the working of the machine may be attained.
I will now proceed to describe a constructional form of my invention, which is given merely by way of example, and is illustrated in side elevation and front elevation in Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawing. Fig. 3 shows a detail hereinafter referred to.
Fixed at a suitable part to a frame (which may comprise two vertical pillars A rising from a common base and having their upper ends connected by a cross head) is a bracket B carrying a nail' block C. Said nail block is made with as many nail receiving apertures as possible (or as may be desirable as a maximum) so that by loading only some of said apertures as may be required, the nails may in plan view form almost any desired pattern and they may be spaced apart to suit practically any variety of heel.

In order that the person loading the nails into the nail block shall feed them only into the proper apertures without having to eX- erclse care to select the proper apertures in the said nail block I provide blinder plates any one or other of which may be selected and removably fixed over the nail block and which blinder plates are formed with apertures giving the desired pattern and spacing but having said apertures in position corresponding exactly with the position of some of the apertures in the nail block so that the operator need only feed nails through or into all the apertures in the blinder' plate. Below said nail block and slidable through an openinglin the bracket B is a plunger D carrying nail drivers (one driver for every aperture in the nail block) which plunger is carried on a vertical spindle E whose lower end enters and is guided in a vertical bearing F and whose upper end portion is screw threaded and has a nut c on it by the rotation of which nut in one or other direction the position of the drivers may be set higher up or lower down relatively to the nail block so tjhat by adjusting said nut the nail points may be made to be flush with or may if desired be made to any desired extent project beyond the upper face of the nail block no matter what the length of the nails may be. By thus raising the drivers, prior to starting the maw chine, so that the nails almost if not quite contact with the lowermost of the heel lifts a much truer driving of the nails will be attained than if the nails have to be raised by the drivers through a considerable distance up the apertures in the nail block before being` brought into contact with the said heel lift as the vibrationof the machine will probably cause some of the nails to be slightly displaced.
At a suitable position in the lower portion of the frame I provide bearings to carry a horizontal driving shaft G one end of which is provided with a crank I-I jointed to which is ya link J which at its opposite and upper end is pivotally connected to a block K (for example by being formed with a quasi cylindrical end which fits into a correspondingly shaped slot in said block) which block is slidably guided in the lower end of the vertical bearing F wherein the plunger spindle E referred to is entered. the arrangement being such that as the crank rotates the block will be raised and sooner or later contact with the bottom end of said spindle, the further movement of the crank (until it reaches thedead center) imparting movement to the plunger and nail drivers to thereby drive the nails into the lifts, the
latter being held against upward movement by 'a' top pad L to be referred to.
To insure that the shaft may be made to make a single revolution and th'en automatically stop, I mount a driving pulley M on said shaft to which constant rotary motion is imparted from any suitable source 'of power. Betweenthe boss of the pulley and the :shaft I make a cylindrical keyway m (for example by drilling a hole) and fit a key m therein of such a shape that in one position it will be flush or substantially flush Y with the outer .surface of the shaft so that i I m2 is attached the other end of the spring being secured to the shaft, the arrangement being such that the spring tends to rotate the key into its coupling position. The opposite end of the key also projects beyond the boss vof the pulleyv and is made in the form of a crank or has apin or the like secured to it and adapted to engage said crank or the like is a pivotally supported catch m3 which is carried in such a position that when the shaft has been rotated through one revolution to thereby firstly effect the compression and nailing of the heel lifts and thereafter move the parts into the loading positions, obstructs the crank or the like and thereby causes the key to be rotated, against the action of the spring referred to, into the position to disconnect the shaft from the boss of the rotating pulley and to stop the machine, a pawl N in engagement with a toothed disk n on the shaft serving to prevent the shaft'recoiling or rotating in the reverse direction. The catch m3 or equivalent has a pivotally mounted ltail piece mq which may be depressed by the operator depressing a trigger S or equivalent to thereby momentarily raise the catch out of its obstructing position, the spring instantly rotating the key to couple the shaft to the rotating pulley and when one revolution has been completed the machine will again be stopped in the manner described. The tail piece mt of the catch m3 or equivalent is supported so that when the trigger S is operated the tail` piece will lift the catch but when thelug m5 which has depressed the taill piece returns the latter will rotate on its' pivot Ato prevent 'obstructing said lug.
The key is made toy The top pad carrier L1 is supported between two collars o, o on a vertical shaft O the upper end of which kshaft enters a bearing which is provided with an air cushion and check' valve, whereby too rapid upward movement of the shaft and top pad carrier may be avoided. The top pad'carrier can swivel or swing on the shaft and its boss at a suitable part has a spiral or other suitably shaped groove into which enters a roll or pin P2 carried by the frame the arrangement being such that when the top pad carrier is at its uppermost position it `will have been swung to one side. Similarly the boss P of the mold carrier is made with a spiral groove or equivalent in which engages a pin or roll P1 carried on an arm fixed to the vertical shaft so that when the said shaft is in its uppermost position the mold carrier will be swung to one side viz. the side opposite to that to which the top pad carrier is swung. Then in this position the nail carrier and the mold carrier will be completely exposed and accessible for loading by the f operator with nails and heel lifts respectively.
The vertical shaft O is normally held in its uppermost position by a spring Q, and it may be depressed against the action of such spring by a treadle g to which the shaft is linked. The lower end of the shaft is formed with a screw thread of high pitch and passes through a nut 'R, held preferably between ball bearings, the outer periphery of which nut is formed with teeth a' and the shaft G firstly herein referred to is provided with a cam T which operates a pin or stud T to thereby take a spring-pressed pawl or catch r out of its engagement with the teeth on the nut, the arrangement being suchthat when the treadle is depressed it firstly swings the top pad carrier and the die or mold carrier into proper central position over the nail block and simultaneously brings down the top pad carrier to thereby clamp or press the heel lifts (previously loaded into the mold) snugly together. The operator next operates the handle or trigger S to cause the machine to be set in motion and the cam T referred to is so timed relatively to the crank H on the shaft G that it permits the pawl r to engage the nut R at this timeso that the nut will securely lock the schaft O and prevent the top pad carrier moving upwardly while the nails are being driven so that said pad takes up the full force of the nail driving pressure Without throwing any strain on the operator who may lrelease the treadle 'and when the nails are driven the further revolution of the crank shaft will throw the pawl out of engagement with the nut andhaving freed same the spring Q will raise the 'shaft and top pad carrier and swing it and the mold carrier to opposite sides as described. The
nailed heel having been removed, Jfor eX ample by an ejector rod, the mold and the nail block are again loaded and the operations described repeated.
Inasmuch as different shapes and patterns of heels have the nails driven in correspondingly diiierent arrangement requiring the use of a particular blinder plate for every different shape and pattern of heel my invention comprehends means whereby the blinder plates are attached to the molds so that the selection of a particular mold will insure the corresponding blinder plate be ing employed the arrangement being such that when the mold has been secured to the carrier and the latter has been swung so that the mold is held at its extreme position to one side of the nail block, the blinder plate will then be in correct position near to the nail block, so that the nails can be loaded into the proper apertures in said block.
In Fig. 3 a blinder plate p1 is shown attached to the mold p. When the mold carrier is swung into its eXtreme outer position, the said blinder plate is positioned exactly over the nail block.
Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A heel building machine having in combination, a stationary nail block, a top pad carrier, and a heel mold carrier, said two carriers being movable transversely in opposite directions relativelv to the nail block for the purposes set forth.
2. A heel building machine having in combination, a stationary nail block, nail driving mechanism, a top pad carrier, a heel mold carrier, means for moving the two carriers transversely in opposite directions relatively to the nail block, and a blinder plate fixed to the said mold carrier so that when the said carrier has been moved to its extreme position on one side of the nail block" the said blinder plate will be positioned over the nail block.
3. In a heel building machine, the combination of a stationary nail block, nail driving mechanism, a top pad carrier, a heel blank carrier, means for swinging the said carriers in opposite directions relatively to the nail block, means for raising and lowering the said top pad carrier automatically during its swinging movement, and means for automatically locking the said top pad carrier against upward movement before the nails are driven into the heel blank.
