REMOVABLE CONDUIT THREAD.

APPLICATION FILED AUG.13, 1910.

Patented Apr. 25,1916,

IIIED WIIMI REMOVABLE coupon-THREAD,

Application filed August 13, 1910.

My invention relates to a removable conduit-thread used particularly in connection with outlet-box for holding the pipe-conduit in position.

In carrying out the invention I provide a nipple, which I thread at one end to engage a jam nut and split its other end in such a manner as to form a plurality of fingers or jaws which spread slightly at the base, and thicken or curve at their free ends, so that when placed over the end of a pipe-conduit, and a tapered sleeve forced over them, they will firmly grasp the pipe-conduit.

Other features of my invention, together with the structural details thereof, may be best understood from the accompanying drawing, and the subjoined description thereof, in which I have illustrated and described in one sheet of drawings an embodiment of the same in what I consider its best form.

In the drawing, Figure 1, is an end view of the device with a broken piece of pipeconduit in place, as seen from the finger or jaw ends. Fig. 2, is an elevation of the same. Fig. 3, is an end view as seen from the threaded end. Fig. 4, is a sectional view taken through the longitudinal axis. Fig. 5, is an elevation of the threaded end fingered or jawed nipple.

In these figures, A, represents the nipple, one end of which being threaded to receive a jam 'or lock nut 1, and the other end is split or divided into a plurality of jaws D of which I have shown four, but any desired number may be applied.

The jaws are expanded as shown at E, and may be thickened at their free ends, as

Specification of Letters Patent.

shown at F, Fig. 5 or curved, as shown in Fig. 1. Their inner faces or side edges may be roughened or serrated, to give them a bite, as also shown.

B is the end of the section of a pipe-con duit, which inserted into the space between the jaws D, is firmly held by the latter when they are pressed firmly against it.

C is the sleeve, tapered on its interior, which is slipped over the nipple A, and presses the jaws D with more or less force against the pipe-conduit B, and thereby holds the latter firmly and the lock nut 1, above mentioned, maintains the hold of the jaws upon the conduit.

Having thus described my invention, and believing I have made a new and valuable improvement in the art to which it pertains, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In combination with a metallic pipe-conduit for electric conductors, a nipple having a threaded portion and an expanded portion adapted to fit the outer surface of said pipe-conduit, said expanded portion formed into a plurality of jaws flaring outwardly at their ends and provided with inner curved surfaces in cross section forming longitudinal sharp edges; a sleeve having a flaring end an inner curved shouldered opposite end engaging the base of said expanded portion of the nipple, and a nut on said threaded end portion, adapted to hold said sleeve in position and to cause the sharp edges of said jaws to bite the outer surface of said pipe-conduit.

In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereto set my hand this 13th day of May, 1910, in the presence of two witnesses.

HOWARD JAMES WHITE.
