the preferreill embodiment of the invention. 'set forth, the bearing surfaces 85 'and seats 'herein and in certain of the claims. is meant- :i line that coincides with the axis of the corresponding wheel axle and of the cylindrical bearing' surfaces arranged within the box. rThis construction permits the rocking movement' of the journal box and wheel axle in passing over irregularities in the track and also permitsv the insertion of the journal box between the upper and lower extensions l' and ill of the side :traine and. tht removal ol' the suine therefrom in :i horizontal direction extendingV lengthwise of the side frame.
Suitable means' are provided for removabllv holding the boxes in position which will not intcit'ere with the transverse rocking inoveiiieiit of the box. ln the construction shown. the upper :ind lower extensions -lI-l and ill of the side traine are provided with alined oiieiiiiigs. and bolts 3T extend through these openings and ou opposite sides oi the box. To strengthen the end ex tensions 3B and 31 of the side frame, an up right vlll is preferabl)` arranged between the outer ends thereof, This upright has inwardly projecting` flanges lll at its upper' and lower ends which are arranged within seats in the inner i;iwz; tensions 33 and 3+ and which ai io, to engage the outer fastening llyren'ioving the fastening` boli and. upright 4G, the box may be rendir..A ined for repairs or the like b v a movemosr .n horizontal, ongitudinal direction, ,without elevating the '3nd 34 of side frame. If necessary in case of accident, e Astandard M.- C. B. box may be rigidly secured in position between the extensions 33 theside frame by ineens of -the bolts 37. l The eonstruction;4 while 'Strongfpermts the. rocking movement of the jeurne'l 'box and Wheel axles in transverse verticlffglanes Without distorting or straining the parts of the truck. The bearings of the journal boxes are thus always mainteinedfin proper alineinent -with the ear' axle journals' in spite of the rocking movement of the wheel axles as the'truck passes over irr larities in the track. Moreover, since e 4Wheel axles are free to ioeltl transversely and the side frames are free to rock independently in longitudinal planes, all of the wheels of the trick will rest solidly on the track in passing over irregularities therein and shocks and strains due to such irregularities will be greatly diminished. i
It should be noted that the Cylindrical hearing surfaces on the upper and lower` faces of the box are wider than the bearing seats 3G on the parts of theside frame and the latter are cutaway at their edges as indicated in Fig. 3 so that ampleclearanee is provided to permit the free rocking move! nient of the box in a transverse vertical plane. To strengthen the end extensions-33 and 34 of theside frame, thej7 are prefer ably channel-shape, as shown, being `provided with edge flanges 42 which merge into the marginal flanges 13 of the side frame.
The manner f *mounting the `journal boxes is particularly advantageous in a truck in which the side frames are siviveled for independent. rocking movement, but this1 improved construction can be employed to advantage in trucks of other types.
It is obvious that numerous changes may be iliade in the details set forth without departure from the essentials ot' the invention as defined iii the claims.
