. and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Can, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to can-tops, and particularly to means for quickly and eifectively sealing the inlet and outlet openings 'of oil-cans; and it consists, substantially, in
the improvements hereinafter described.
The principal object of the invention is to generally improve the construction and to increase the efliciency and utility of articles of this character.
Another object is to provide a supplementa l cut-oif-top for cans provided with conical tops proper.

Coming now to a detailed description of said drawings, and referring to the parts therein shown, each by a distinguishing ref erence numeral, uniformly employed in both figures, 2 indicates a can-body to which is suitably secured a conical top proper 3 provided with a central opening a, an inlet 5 and an outlet 6. 7 and 8 designate respectively a funnel and a neck secured to said top and communicating respectively with said openings 6 and 5.
20 designates an annular table-flange or track suitably secured to the upper edge of the body 2, and 21 designates a stop or detent secured on the upper face of the flange 20.
9 indicates a conical cutaway-disk or spanner, formed of sheet metal, its terminals or blades being indicated by the number 10. In a fiat-top can this element would of course be plane. Its central portion is upturned to provide a neck 11. Said neck may be either integral with the spanner or may be formed separately and secured thereto, but in either instance it is closed by a top 12 fixed thereon.

suitably secured a plate-gasket 14 of leather, fiber, rubber, composition or other material suited for such purpose. Fixed by rivets 15 to the lower face and near the lateral. edges of each blade 10 is a pair of bow springs 16, normally compressed, whereby their arcs bear forcibly against the flange 20.
To operate the closure the operator will grasp the handle 13 or the bead 22 to depress the supplemental top to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1 to thereby depress the parts connected therewith, freeing them from frictional contact with the top 3 and compressing the bow springs 16. The operator may then rotate the supplemental top in an evident manner until one of the blades 10 strikes the stop 21 which prevents further movement. The position shown by full lines in both figures is the closed one, and that shown by dotted lines in Fig. l is the open one, or position for filling the can or discharging its contents. The springs 16 are sufiiciently strong to press the gaskets forcibly over the openings which they are adapted to close, and the neck 11 fits so snugly in the opening 4: that no liquid can escape from the can when it is inclined or even should it be tipped over.
For the' purpose of this specification the top 3 may be termed the top proper, and the rotatable element 910 the supplemental top.
It will be evident that numerous unessential changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. For instance, the disk 9-10 might be an annulus provided with openings adapted to be brought into registration with the inlet and outlet openings in the top proper.
I claim as new the following, to-wit:
1. The combination with a can-top proper having an inlet and an outlet opening, of a supplemental top adapted to be rotated to open or close said openings, spring feet secured to the edge of the supplemental top, and an annular track on which said feet normally bear, whereby the supplemental top is forced toward the top proper.
2. In a can, the combination with a canbody and a top proper secured thereto and having an inlet and an outlet opening, of a supplemental top adapted to be rotated, an annular track secured to an upper portion of the can, spring feet adapted to both rest and travel on said track, and gaskets secured on the upper face of said rotatable top and adapted to be brought intopositions to either close or open said openings.
3. The combination with a can comprising a body and a top secured thereon and provided with a central opening and an inlet and an outlet opening, of a rotatable top comprising a spanner, a handle secured to its central portion and projecting through said central opening, gaskets on that face of the rotatable top which confronts the first recited top, an annular track secured to said can, and spring feet secured to said spanner and bearing on said track whereby to press said gaskets tightly over said inlet and outlet openings.
4-. The combination with a can-body and with a conical top secured thereon and provided with a central opening, said top provided also with an inlet and an outlet opening, of a rotatable supplemental top comprising a neck extending through said central opening, a gasket-carrying element to which said neck is secured, and means secured to said gasket-carrying element for holding it yieldingly toward said can-top.
5. The combination with a can-body and with a conical top secured thereon and provided with a central opening and with inlet and outlet openings, of a rotatable, conical,
supplemental top arranged in a lower plane than said can-top, a neck thereon adapted to close said central opening, gaskets secured on said rotatable top to be brought thereby into positions to either close or open said inlet and outlet, and means for pressing said tops yieldingly toward each other.
6. The combination with a can-body and with a conical top secured thereon and provided with a central opening and with an inlet and an outlet, of a rotatable, conical, supplemental top in a lower plane than said top, a neck secured thereto and projected through said central opening, gaskets carried by said rotatable top and adapted to either open or close said inlet and outlet, an annular track secured to the can, and spring feet secured to the rotatable top and adapted to bear on said track to press said rotatable top toward the can top, said feet adapted also to travel on said track.
