Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. SUHULTZ, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Polishing, Coating, and the like, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, and shown in the accompanying drawings.
The present invention relates to devices for polishing, coating, brushing, scrubbing, abrading and the like, and an object of the invention is to provide an improved handle construction whereby a better action of the brushing element may be obtained.
Another object of the invention is to provide a weight so arranged on a'handle pivoted to the brushing element that there will be no tendency for the brushing element to tilt on the handle and rise off the floor, the weight preferably being detachably connected to the handle by a means which permits its ready connection and disconnection without the use of separate fastening devices.
To these and other ends the invention consists in certain parts and combinations of parts all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure l is a side view of the device constructed in accordance with the present improvements, the lower portion only of the handle being shown, and the brushing element being shown in vertical section; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the underside of the detachable weight; Fig. 3 is detailed bottom view showing the connection of the weight to the handle; Fig. 4 is a top view of the handle and the plate on the brushing element, the ferrule of the handle being shown in section; Fig. 5 is a sectional view illustrating the manner in which the weight is connected to the handle; and Figs. 6 and 7 are transverse sectional views through the ferrule.
In the specification and claims, the eX- pression, brushing element. is used in the sense of any element which is used for coating, brushing, scrubbing, polishing or abrading, the drawing illustrating, in this instance, a floor polishing brush which comprises a rectangular flat head 1 made of two blocks of wood. secured together, the under block having a sheet of felt 2 or other yielding substance adhesively secured thereto and covered by a removable cloth 3 secured to the head by being engaged over fastening device :4. embedded in the top of the head.
The handle 5 may be in the form of a wooden rod preferably yieldingly and pivotally-connected to the brushing element at the top near the center thereof, this connection, in this instance, being in the form of a sheet metal plate 6 screwed at 7 to the top surface of the head 1 near the center thereof and having a pair of upstanding parallel ears 8 formed with alined perforations. Through these ears, laterally and outwardly-turned ends 9" on two rods 10 are passed, the rods being connected together at their opposite ends by a loop 11 passed through a perforation or bore in the handle 5 so that such rods may be formed from a single piece of wire rod. From the looped portion 11, the rods 10 extend substantially parallel to each other and with the handle 5 so as to project beyond the latter.
The'arms may be held against spreading in proximity to the handle and, to this end, the-latter is reduced at 12 and has a ferrule fitted thereover and about the reduced portion. This ferrule preferably embodies a ring 13 abutting the shoulder 15L between the reduced portion 12 and the main portion of the handle and having its center opening enlarged on opposite sides at 15 for the passage of the rods 10. This ring 13 is connected by two bars 16 with a cap 17 which fits over the end of the reduced portion of the handle and is secured to said end by a screw fastener 18. This cap is also provided near opposite sides with two openings or perforations 19 through which the rods 10 pass.
The ferrule and the parallel rods may be utilized for detachably connecting a weight to the handle in order that the weight may be applied directly at the center of the brush for the purpose of eliminating any tilting of the brushing element on the handle during the movement of the device back 'and forth by means of the handle. This weight is preferably in the form of an elongated casting 24 extending in the direction of and secured to the handle. In this in stance, the under surface thereof is pro- .ears 8.
vided with two longitudinally extending channels or recesses 20 which are enlarged at their inner ends at 21 so that the distance between the outer walls of the recesses is less at the surface of the weight than at the bottoms of the recesses. To prevent the movement of the weight toward the pivot of the handle, the weight is interlocked with the handle member 5 and, to this end, has a pocket 22 at one end adapted to fit over and conform to the cap end of the ferrule. This pocket or recess 22 is slightly wider than the cap 17 in order that the weight may have a slight movement on the handle so that, when the instrument is moved rearwardly, the weight will ride up on the handle and then slide downwardly b gravity to initiate a return movement.
In order to attach or detach the handle, the rods 10 are pressed toward each other, permitting their laterally-turned ends 9 to be withdrawn from or fitted to the parallel The weight is fitted to or withdrawn from the two rods 10 by causing such weight to rock on one of the rods as the center as shown in Fig. 0 while withdrawing or inserting the other rod.
A device constructed in accordance with this invention permits the handle to be resiliently connected to the brushing element so that a yielding pressure on the latter may be maintained and all jars on the hands of the user are eliminated. The handle may be readily connected to or disconnected from the brushing element. The weight is detachable to permit the device to be used for different classes of work. and when the weight is connected to the handle, it is so located that it exerts a pressure at the center of the brushing element so that the tilting of the latter to rise off of the floor is prevented. a

1913, Serial #773,883 for improvements in floor polishers.
lVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a support and a handle connected thereto, embodying two resilient portions, of a weight having portions interlocking with said resilient portions and held thereto by the expansion of said portions.
2. The combination with a support, and a handle having a bifurcated end secured to the support, the arms of the bifurcated. portion being resilient, of a weight having two grooves receiving said parallel portions, the distance between the outer walls of the grooves being less at the surface of the weight than at the bottoms of the grooves so that the resilient arms after being compressed, will. expand and interlock with the weight.
3. The combination with a support, of a handle connected thereto having an attaching portion consisting of a wire passed transversely through the handle near its end and the protruding portions of the wire being bent parallel. a ferrule fitting over the end of the handle and the parallel portions of the wire and a detachable weight having parallel recesses therein, adapted to receive the parallel portions of the wire, the distance between the outer walls of the recesses being less at the surface of the weight than at the bottom of the recesses so that the weight will be locked to the parallel por tions, said weight having a transverse recess adapted to receive the ferrule to prevent the movement of thg weight longitudinally of the parallel portions of the wire.
