Description

JOHN w. KEELY. I f lmp rovement ih Fly-Wheels.
I No. 118,022. j Patented August15, 1871.
UNITED STATES JO IIX \V. KEELY, OF PIITLXDEIZPIHA, PEXXSYLX'AXIA, ASSIGXOR TO NATIIAX' PATENT OFFICE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 11 ,022, dated August 15, 1371.
To all arlmm it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jenx \V. KEELY, ot'lhiladelphia, lennsywania, have nvented a new and useful Improvement in Fly-'lu "ls, ol' whieh the ibllowing' is a speeitieation:
M1 invention eonsists in arranging a flywheel on the main shat'tot' any engine or foot or horse power, imlependently, in (combination with gearing, as lu-reinal'ter deseribed, whereby I am euabled, without danger, to run the tly-wheel at a high veloeity, and aeeomplish the work of an ordinary tly-wheel with one ofnmeh less weight.
The drawing represents in full size a longitudinal vertical section of a device embodyingmy invention. i
A and 13 are uprightsqvhieh furnish bearings and support for the other parts ot'thedeviee. U is the tly-wheel, whieh is not rigidly attached to the main shaft 1), but arranged independently thereon. The hub of the fly-wheel C is a little main shaft 1).
rigidly, also, the eog'avheel IT, .Yhieh gears into the cog-wheel I, which is: rigidly attached to the K represents a eranlc, by whieh power is applied. L and M are collars, designed to keep the tly-wheel in position.
The \eloeity ot' the ily-wheel C is regulated by the proportions of the gear-wh els, which may be iuereased or diminished in diarneter at pleasure; but they must be so eonstrueted that the shaft of the geaz-wheels F'and ll'shall run parallel I with the main shaft.
The tiy-wheel may he made in any substantial manner; but I prefer to make it solid from hub to rim, rather than with spokes: or arms; and also prefer that it should be turned up true and balanced. 1
lelaiiui The tly-wheel (l, in combination with the gearwheels E F I] I, all arranged and operating in relation to shaft 1), substantially as set forth.
\Vitnesses: J. \V. KEELY.
