JOINT FOR FRAME MEMBERS.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 18, 1916.
Application filed February 27, 1915. Serial No. 11,055.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Josnrrr F. LAMB and IIEMAN C. Mncai-zcaL, citizens of the United States, and residents of New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Joints for Frame Members, of which the following is a specifica- This invention relates to a frame within which an electric heater, for instance in the form of coiled resistance wire, is mounted and supported. The frames may be variously shaped, and sized to meet different conditions.
The object of the invention is to provide such a frame which can be easily and cheaply manufactured and the parts of which can be securely connected together and yet be readily separable in order that one part which may have been damaged can be replaced by another. Not only does the construction permit of such rep1acement,but
it also facilitates and cheapens the assembly of the device.
The portion of the frame chosen for illustration is such as is commonly used in what is known as an electrical grill.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of such a frame. Fig. 2 an end View, the side members of the frame being in section. Fig. 3 is a side view of a portion of one of the side members of the frame.
In the drawings, a, a, denote the side members of the frame, and b, b, the cross bars secured at their ends to the side members. The invention is found in the method of securing the cross bars to the side members. The side members are longitudinally channeled by offsetting the central portion, as indicated at 2, providing edge flanges 3, 3. In the offset or channeled portion are elongated slots 4, and alined notches 5, 5, are
formed in the edge flanges 3, about opposite the center of the elongated slot 4:. Gentrally at the ends of the cross bars are .formed T-headed projections 10, the length bers a, a, they will snap into and interlock with the notches 5, 5, of the edge flange. The corners of the bar are slabbed off on an incline, as indicated at 13.
To assemble the bar with the side members it is only necessary to insert the T-headed projection through the elongated opening at, and then turn the bar. The spring of the metal of the side members is suflicient to allow the cross bar to be turned until the straight parts of the ends come opposite the notches 5, 5, at which time the bar becomes interlocked with the side members, as clearly indicated in Fig. 2, providing a very rigid connection between the bar and the side members, and at the same time one which can be easily made or broken by a mere rotation of the cross bar.
The invention has been described in regard to the embodiment illustrated in the drawings, but the language used is not language of limitation, but merely of description. Furthermore it is clear that the invention is not to be limited to the shape of the frame or of its separate members.
\Ve claim as our invention 1. In a device of the character described, a frame member comprising edge flanges and a central oflset portion having an elongated slot therein and alined notches. in the edge flanges, a transverse member provided at its end with a T-headedprojection, the head of which is adapted to pass through the elongated slot, and the stem rotatable within said slot, flat surfaces at either side of said stem, adapted to enter and interlock with said notches.
2. In a device of the character described, a frame member provided with edge flanges and a central depressed portion having alined notches in the edge flanges and an elongated slot in the offset portion in line with said notches, a second frame member arranged at an angle to the first, a T-headed projection at the end thereof adapted to pass through the elongated slot and by the rotation of said member to be interlocked with the first mentioned frame member, the length of the stem of said projection being less than the distance from the outside of said offset portion to the opposite side of the edge flanges.
3. In a device of the character described, a channeled frame member having an elongated slot in its central portion, a cross bar provided with a T-headed projection at its end adapted to pass through said elongated slot, its stem being shorter than the depth of said channel, the said cross bar being rotatable to bring it into normal position, and means at the edges of said channeled member adapted to engage the ends of said cross bar When it is rotated into normal position.
4:. In a device of the character described, a channeled member of slightly resilient material having an elongated slot arranged centrally of said channeled member and notches in the edges thereof, a cross bar having a T-headed projection at its end adapted to pass through the elongated slot and permit rotation of the cross bar, fiat portions at either side of the stem of said T-headed projection adapted upon the rotation of said cross bar to temporarily displace the resilient edge portions of the channeled member to interlock With the notches in the edges thereof. 7
5. In a device of the character described, a channeled frame memberhaving an elongated slot at its center and notches in itsnotches.
