These flexible fingers are preferably made of wire woundinthe form of spiral springs and act as a means to push the rivets along the shelf 20 and into the raceway 21. f Said member 17 is given a rotary movement by means of suitable gearing 35 .fast to a shaft 36 to which said rotary member 17 is rigidly fastened.
In order to release the rivets and allow them to slide downwardly into the raceway 21, the fingers 34 are arranged to engage a cam 37 (shown in Figs. 3 and 4), said cam commencing at 38 adjacent to the point where the raceway enters the casing 16 and` terminating at 39 (Fig. 4), v
While' it'is 'inore convenient, in the manufacture of the hopper, to vmake the flange 22 as shown in the drawings, it will be evident that without departing from the4 spirit ofmy invention said flange might be -continued to the top `of the casing, for it is the inner face of said flange which guides the prongs of the rivets and the flange forms a `cover over the'heads of the rivets where theyv project therebeneath to prevent from piling on top of another. In Fig. 12 I have illustrated such a modified form of my invention in which 43 is the casing wall, 44 the shelf, 45 the slot above the shelf and beneath the casing wall and 46 the vflange extending from the slot 45 to the Atop of the casing Wall 43. The flange'22 or the flange 46 may be made integral with the casing wall without .departing from the spirit of my invention, but it is preferable to have said flange made ina separate piece yon account of the ease of 'manufacturing the same.
The operation of the hopper hereinbefore specifically described is as follows: Said hopper is positioned when in use with the casing standing at an angle of 45, as illustrated by the broken line a--a of Fig. v2. Thus all ofthe parts are set at angles of 45to a vertical plane and the rivets will lie in .mass in the left hand side of the hopper as viewed in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4 of the drawings. A rotary motion is imparted to the member 17 and the flexible fingers 34 engage the rivets and move them along the -shelf 2O with' their heads resting Aon said eFig. 4, it will be seen, are prevented from passing down the raceway by the rivet 24 one rivet which is just about to pass the entrance to the raceway, but said rivet 24 upon conrivet 24 can pass around the corner of the flange 22 adjacent to the raceway and into said raceway. SaidI rivet will at such a time be partially rotated and assume substantially i the three ydifferent positions illustrated in Fig. 6. As 'soon ras the rivet 24 begins to slide down the `raceway the other rivets j which are located along the shelf on the opthe flange 22 will slide down the raceway following the rivet 24. Having thusdescribed my invention, what I claim and desire by Letters Patent to secure is: y
1. A hopper for feeding a two-pronged rivet having, in combination, a casing with a cylindrical wall and an inclined bottom, a raceway leading out of said casin-g at the bottom of said cylindrical Wall, an annular flange extending` partly around the inner face of said cylindrical wall at a distance from the bottom of said wall slightly greater than the depth of the head of said rivet, -the terminationv of said flange at one end thereof forming part of one side of said raceway where the same leadsout of said casing, means constructed and arranged to engage saidy rivet and push it along said casing, with a portion of its head beneath said flange and with one of said prongs resting against the `inner edge of said Hange and meansv adjacent to the entrance to said raceway constructed and arranged to move said lpushing means out` of engagement with said rivet.
