UNITED STATES HENRY BOTHE, OF ST.V LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN OMNIBUS-BRAKES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,972, dated August 15, 1871.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY BOTHE, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carriage-Brakes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which dll enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying' drawing forming part ot' this speciiication.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in brakes for omnibuses, wagons, and other carriages; and consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a side elevation of a carriage provided with my improved brake. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the under side of' the carriage, showing' the arrangement of the parts. Fig'. 3 is a sectional front view, show- Iing the form and position of the main lever.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the main lever, which is connected with the front of the carriage and operated by the foot of the driver. Its lower portion forms a goose-neck, with a horizontal branch, B, for securing-the two journals C and D, which form the i'ulcrum of the lever. E is a sway-bar attached horizontally to the bottoni of the carriage by the bolt F, upon which it works. The lower end of the lnain lever A is attached to one end of this bar by the connecting-rod G. H is a coil spring attached to the bottom of the carriage, the extended end of which bears on the bar, as seen at I, for releasing the shoes from the Wheels and giving a back motion to the main lever. J J are the brakelevers, whose fulcrums are at the point k k, upon the' outer ends of which levers are the friction-shoes L L. The brake-levers J J are supported by the hangers N N and braces o o, as seen in the drawing. rllhe inner and long ends of these levers have slot-holes. M is a rod which connects these slotted ends with the end of the sway-bar E, as seen in the drawing.
The effect of pushing the main lever A from the front of the vehicle by the foot ofthe driver will be readily understood from the drawing. The shoes L L will be forced against the rear wheels with great power. When the pressure is removed the action of the spring H relieves the wheels directly.
It will be seen that the brake is applied by positive motion and in the most direct and efticient manner.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent'- The arrangement of lever A, rod G, bar E, coil spring H, rod M, brake-levers J J, and shoes L L, all constructed, as described, to form an improved omnibus-brake.
HENRY BOTHE. Vitnesses:
LEwIs GERTII, HEINRICH SEEGEns.
