To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that, I, GYBRGY VAJDA, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Landisville, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Keyless Locks, of which the following is a specification- This invention relates to new and useful improvements in keyless locks.
The primary objectof the invention is to provide a door lock presenting such complicated exterior appearance as to deceive an unauthorized person with respect to its correct manipulation although being readily operated by an authorized person familiar Fig. 6 1s slldably mounted through an opening 14 in the front with the workings thereof.
A further object is to provide a door'lock operable from either side thereof without the employment ofa key and having reand the catch with which thelock is provided.
A still further object is to provide a keyless door lock having a knob actuated catch and being provided with reverselv acting operating connections between the lock catch and bolt, the bolt being retained in either projected or retracted position as desired. 7 With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same concombination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and then claimed. I In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views :-Figure 1 is an elevational view of the lock detached, with the side plate of the casing removed and parts being broken away, the bolt being shown retained in its retracted position. Fig. 2 is a similar view but with the bolt illustrated in its retained projected locking position. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional v1ew through the device showing the catch mechanism. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof showing the elements positioned as illustrated in ig. 1. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 but with the elements illustrated as shownin Fig. 2. In the construction of the present lock, a casing 10 is provided of substantially the usual form and has a stationary spindle 11 extending therethrough and provided upon its opposite ends with sham knobs 12 lock, the entire structure being rigid with the casing and merely serving to confuse an unauthorized person by the plurality of knobs.
A catch 13 of the form best illustrated in wall 15 of the casing, while a locking bolt 16 as best illustrated in Fig. 7 is slidably mounted through an opening17 in the said front wall.
Opposite knobs 18 are arranged exteriorly of the casing 10 secured to the opposite projecting ends of a spindle 19 journaled through the casing, the said knobs being adapted for retracting the catch 13 by means of an arm 20 carried by the spindle 19 interiorly of the casing and freely seating within a slot 21 in the adjacent side of the catch 13.
The bolt 16 slidably mounted within a frame 22 within the casing, is provided with a projecting side rib 23 which is engageable at its opposite ends by the crank 24 of a shaft 25 journaled through the casing andhaving oppositely arranged operating turn buttons 26 secured thereto. When the bolt 16 is projected to its locking position as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 5 of the drawings by the mechanism hereinafter described, either of the buttons 26 may be turned for engaging the crank 24 with the inner end of the bolt rib 23 thus retaining the bolt projected, while similarly, when the bolt is retracted as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 4 of the drawings the buttons 26 may be reversely turned for engaging the crank 24 with the forward end of the rib 23 thereby retaining the bolt in its inoperative retracted position.
