Be it known that I, HARRY B. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Machines for Gluing Blanks, of which the following is a specification. 4
This invention relates to machines for ap plying glue to blanks, and is an improvement upon the invention set forth in Patent No. 726,473, issued to me on April 28, 1903, for a machine for gluing blanks.
The machine set forth in the specification of the patent referred to embodied two oppositely disposed rollers, or rolls, compris ing separated circular collars, the faces of which performed the function of applying glue to the blank which was fed past the rolls. The arrangement was such that the.
glue applying faces of one roll were out of alinement with the glue applying faces of the opposite roll. When the blank moved past the rolls the first roll to be engaged by it applied the glue to the blank in a plurality of stripes, each stripe corresponding to one of the glue'applying faces upon that roll. As the blank passed the other roll a second series of stripes of glue was applied to the blank, the said stripes being intermediate of the other stripes and being wide enough to completely fill the uncoated space between the stripes formed by the first roll. Hence the blank left the machine with a continuous broad band or zone of glue applied to it. Where the blank was to be used as a covering for paper boxes usually this zone of glue extended completely across the blank so that the entire face of the blank was covered with glue. j The machine referred to also embodied a roll which carried glue to the glue applying faces, said roll being arranged so that ,the
glue appyling faces of the rolls rolled upon I it. The degree of pressure of the faces of the glue applying rolls to the roll which carried the glue to them could be regulated by an adjusting device. Although. this machine operates very satisfactorily when properly adjusted, it has been found, in practice, that the operator of the machine should take care that the adjustment of the two rolls is the same, that is, the two glue applying rolls should bear with substantially the same pressure upon the roll which supports them and which may carry to them the glue or substance which they are to apply to the blank. And if the pressure of the two glue applying rolls is not the same,
one of therolls will take up and deliver the glue to the blanks, and without necessitating special care of the operator to attain this end.
In such machines the glue or other substance to be applied to the blank is'usually carried in a receptacle or tank and a glue feeding roll or wallower is provided which dips into the bath of glue in the tank and as it rotates, feeds the glue toward the glue applying rolls. One of the objects of the present invention is to provide an improved arrangement for mounting this glue feeding roll which greatly facilitates its disengagement from the other mechanism with which it connects and which rotates it.
A further object of the invention is to construct the machine in such a way aswill greatly facilitate the accessibility of the moving parts, and particularly of the rolls.
In the present embodiment of the 'inven tion the collars of the glue applying rolls rest directly on a supporting roll which transfers the glue to them from the gluefeeding roll. This transfer roll is preferably covered with a yielding covering such as rubber. The pressure of the collars tends v to wear furrows in this covering. One of the objects of this invention is to overcome this tendencv so far as possible and to equalize and distribute the effects of use on this transfer or supporting roll. Further objects of the invention will appear more clearly hereinafter.
The invention consists in the'general com-- bination of parts and features to be set forth hereinafter, all of which contribute to produce an efficient gluing machine.
A preferred embodiment of my invention will be particularly describedin the following specification, While the broad scope of my invention will be pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertlcal section through a gluing machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of the machine shown in Fig. l, certain parts being broken away. Fig. 3 is an elevation and partial section showing one end of the machine. Fig. 4 is an end elevation and par tial section.
Referring more particularly to the parts, the machine frame preferably comprises two end frames or housings 10 and 11, which may, if desired, be supported on the flanges of the receptacle'or tank 12, in which the bath of glue is placed. Referring more par-- ticularly to Fig. 1, these end frames preferably comprise a base frame 13 and an upper frame 14, said frames preferably being clamped together'and forming a bearing 15 between them for the end of the shaft 16 of a roll 17. The axis of this roll 17 is preferably disposed midway between two substantially vertical guideways 18 which are formed in the upper frame 14. These guideways 18 are for the purpose of holding in position glue applying rolls 19 and 20, and they hold the rolls so that they are free to move upwardly in the guides. The shafts 21 of these rolls preferably fit neatly in the guideways 18. The r0-ll119 is provided with a plurality of spaced collars 22 which are disposed a slight distance apart substaning the degree of tially throughout the entire length of the roll. These collars are of circular form and present glue applying faces 22 which roll upon the surface of the supporting roll 17. The means for supporting the glue applying rolls is entirely devoid of any adjustment whatever, and the pressure exerted by each glue applying roll upon the supporting roll is simply its own weight, or any weight which it may support.
Above the glue applying rolls I prefer to provide presser rolls 23, which are in the form of simple cylindrical rolls, the shafts 24 of which are preferably received in the guideways 18. The surfaces of these presser rolls are not in contact with the surface of the glue applying rolls, but are preferably held a slight distance away from them. In a order to accomplish this the rolls 19 and 20 with supporting rollers 25' (see Fig. 3) disposed near each end of the machine, and on these rollers 25 similar rollers 26 rest, said rollers 26 being carried on the shafts of the presser rolls. It is understood also that the presser rolls rest with their .weight upon the glue applying rolls, and there is no adjusting means for changthis pressure. From this arrangement it is evident that the pressure I prefer to provide or weight exerted by the two rolls 19 and 20 1 on the roll 17 is the same, and it cannot be The blanks which are to. be fed through i the rolls are preferably supported on one side of the machine in any suitable manner, such as on a drop table 10. In the'operation of the machine a small pack of blanks are fed from the table 10 through the machine, and in passing through, these. blanks engage the under faces of the presser rolls 23 and tend to lift them slightly. In this way the Weight of the presser roll is utilized to press the blank against the glue applying faces of the rolls 19 and 20.
In order to strip the blank from the first glue applying roll 19 and guide it to the second roll 20 any suitable guiding means may be provided. The' means illustrated comprises the longitudinally disposed guide bar 27 which extends longitudinally of the machine between the two glue applying rolls. This guide bar has a plurality of guide fingers or plates 27" which project into the space between the glue applying faces 22 of the roll 19, and the rear ends or tails 28 of these fingers project toward and in line with the glue applying faces 22 ofthe roll 20. As a further means for guiding the blank between the rolls I provide another set of guide fingers 29, which project toward the rear of the machine and which project over the shaft 21 of the roll 20, and the upper edges of the said guide fingers 29 are depressed below the upper sides of the glue applying faces 22 of the roll 20. The rear extremities 30 of these fingers, however, project beyond the glue applying faces so that as the blank proceeds toward the rear of the ends, and these sockets are adaptable to be received over small blocks 34 attached on the inner sides of the frame members 14 (see Fig. 2).
- I prefer to utilize the roll 17 not only as means ,to support the glue applying rolls, but also prefer to utilize itas a transfer roll for transferring the glue to the rolls. In
order to feed the glue fromthe glue holdi'ng receptacle to the roll 17 I prefer to provide a feed roll or wallower 38 which runs in the bath of glue and I preferably mount this roll in such a way that it can be readily driven from the driving mechanism; and furthermore so that it can be readily disengaged and swung up or withdrawn out of contact with the glue. For this purpose I prefer to provide two supporting arms 35 which provide bearings 36 for the ends of the shaft 37 of the feed roll 38. The under surface of this roll,.when it is in the position indicated in Fig. 1, dips in the bath of glue in the receptacle 12, and when in this position a driven gear wheel 39, which is rigid on the shaft of the roll 38, meshes with a driving gear wheel or pinion 40 which is rigid with the roll 17. ported on-pivotal supports or pins 41, which pins are loosely mounted in brackets 42 which maybe supported on the upper edges of the receptacle or tank 12. These brackets have outwardly disposed extensions or aprons 43 which form a gap 44 between them, and in this gap each arm 35 is mounted on the pin 41.
The arms 35 are preferably connected to the pins 41 in such a way that they can be adjusted away from the roll 17 in order to disengage the gear 39 from its driving gear 40 before swinging the arms up. For this purpose I prefer to provide each arm 35 with a substantially horizontal extension 44, and each of these extensions are formed with a longitudinal guide slot 45, through which the pin 41 passes. Extending into the outer end of the extension 43 I provide an adjusting screw- 46 which passes through and has a threaded connection with the pin 41, the inner end of the said screw abutting against the inner end of the slot 45, as at the point 47. The outer end of the screw 46 has a shank 48 which is preferably of angular form, and this shank is provided with a hand wheel 49, by means of which the screw can be rotated. Between the outer end of the slot 45 and the pin 41 I prefer to provide a coiled spring 50 which is disposed around the screw and which forces the arms outwardly when the screw 46 is rotated in the proper direction to adjust the roll 38 back into its working position. When the roll 38 is in its working position the axis of the pivot 41 is approximately in line with the axes of the shafts 16 and 37. Also when the roll 38 is in its working position the weight of the rolls is preferably supported on the'edges of the tank 12, for which purpose I prefer to provide the arms 35 with laterally projecting lugs 51.
When the roll 38 hasbeen adjusted away from the roll 17 and the arms 35 swung upwardly, these arms may be supported in the 1 (see Fig. 1), for which purpose I prefer to provide each bracket 42 with an inclined face 52 which will be engaged by a seat 53 formed on the back or outer edge of the arm.
WVhen the roll is supported in this position the axis 37 of the roll will be disposed slightly to the left of the pins 41 so that the roll tends by gravity to remain in this position.
I prefer to form the feed roll 38 of considerably smaller diameter than the gear wheel 39 which drives it; and the surface of this roll is in contact with the surface of the roll 17. Fromj-Ithis arrangement the pegear 55 rigid on the shaft 16, said,

I prefer also to drive the presser rolls positively, and for this purpose I prefer to provide the ends of their shafts with gearwheels 57 which mesh with the gears 56. In order to prevent the pressure at the glue applying faces 22 from wearing grooves in the rubber cover 17 on the roll 17 I prefer to provide means for shifting the points of contact by shifting the rolls longitudinally with respect to each other. For this purpose I prefer to mount the shaft 16 so that it can slide longitudinally in its bearings, and beyond the pinion 40 (Figs. 3 and 4), I provide a disk 58, the edge of which runs in a cam groove 59 in a cam 60 on the shaft 37. As the cam rotates it therefore shifts the shaft and roll 17 longitudinally to and fro gradually. This distributes the wear and furthermore tends to distribute the glue uniformly on the transfer roll. The upper part of the housings 10 forms horizontal rests 10 which can be used to temporarily support the rolls when removing or replacing them in the machine as indicated at 10.
The inclined receiving shelf 31 may be swung up to the position indicated at 31 when the roll'38 isswung up tothe position 38 .The machine may be driven continuously from a suitable source of power which rotates the pinion 55 It is understood that the embodiment of the invention described herein is only one of the many embodiments or forms the invention may take, and I do not Wish to be limited in the practice of the invention nor in my claims to the particular embodiment set forth. i
On account of the fact that the rolls l9 and have freely movable or floating shafts, if it should happen that a cloth or other obstruction comes between them and ,the roll 17, the rolls will not be injured or warped in any way. Such cloths are used in cleaning and may become accidentally caught in the rolls as suggested. It is also evident that if such a cloth passed upwardly between the rolls 17 and 38 the shaft 37 of the roll 38 could swing upwardly and outwardly on the :arms so that no injury would be done to the rolls in this event.
What I claim is 1: In a gluing machine for applying glue to a blank, in combination, a receptacle for the glue, a. pair of glue applying rolls mounted opposite to each other: and each having spaced glue applying faces for applying glue from said receptacle to .the blank a supporting roll under said glue applying rolls and supporting said glue ap- I plying rolls by pressure thereupon at said means of applying pressure therebetween.
2. In a glulngjmachine for applying glue to a blank, in combination, a receptacle for the glue, a pair of glue applying rolls mounted opposite to each other and each having spaced glue applying faces for applying glue from said receptacle -to the blank, a supporting roll under said glue applying rolls and supporting said glue applying rolls by pressure thereupon at said glue applying faces, the said faces of one of said lue a lyin rolls being out of alinement with said faces of the other of said glue applying rolls, whereby said glue applying rolls will apply stripes of glue to the blank moving in one direction past said rolls, the totality of said stripes forming a continuous zone of glue on the blank, means for guiding the blank past said glue applying rolls, means for guiding said glue :m-

In a luing machine for applying glue to a blank, in combination, a receptacle for the glue, a pair of glue applying rolls mounted opposite to each other and each having spaced glue applying facesfor applying glue from said receptacle to the blank,'a supporting roll under said glue applyingrolls and supporting said glue applying rolls by pressure thereupon at said glue applying faces, the said faces of one of said glue applying rolls being out of alinement with the saidfaces of the other of said glue applying rolls, whereby said glue applying rolls will apply stripes of glue to the blank moving in one direction past said rolls, the totality of said stripes forming a continuous zone of glue on the blank, and presser rolls disposed over said glue applying rolls, said presser rolls having supporting collars, said glue applying rolls having supporting .collars under and supporting said pressenrolls at said collars and holding said presser rolls with the under faces thereof out of contact with the glue applying faces, the weight exerted through said glue applying rolls to said supporting roll being the sole means of applying pressure therebetween.

In a gluing machine for applying glue to a blank, in combination, a frame having a pair of oppositely disposed substantially vertical guides, a pair of glue applying rolls having shafts lying in said guides, said rolls having spaced glue applying faces for applying glue to the blank, a supporting roll under said glue applying rolls and supporting said glue applying rolls by pressure thereupon at said glue applying faces, the
said-faces of one of said glue applyingrolls being out of alinement with the said faces the blank, the weight exerted through said glue applying rolls to said supporting roll being the. sole means of applying pressure therebetween.

11. In a gluing machine for applying glue to blanks, in combination, a frame, a supporting roll rotatably mounted in said frame, glue applying rolls supported on said supporting roll for applying glue to the blank, a driving gear wheel rigid with said supporting roll, a' receptacle for the glue, a
said frame, and means for adjusting said pivotal supports away from saidv driving gear wheel to disengage said driven gear wheel therefrom, said arms being adapted to swing up and carry said feed roll out of contact with the glue.
12. In a gluing machine for gluing blanks,
' in combination, a frame, a supporting roll mounted rotatably therein, said frame having guides disposed on opposite sides of the axis of said roll, a pair of glue applying rolls having shafts received respectively in said guides and having glue applying faces rolling onthe surface of said supporting roll on their under sides and adapted to apply the glue to the passing blank on their upper sides, a driving gear wheel rigid with said supporting roll, gear wheels carried by said shafts and meshing with said driving gear wheel to drive said glue applying rolls, a receptacle for the glue below said'supo porting roll, a feed roll over said receptacle adapted to dip in the bath of glue therein for carrying the glue to said supporting roll,
, a driven gear wheel rigid therewith and meshing with said driving gear wheel to drive said feed roll, a pair of arms supporting said feed roll and having pivotal supports on said frame enabling said arms to swing up to withdraw the said feed roll from the bath, and means for adjusting the arms on said pivotal supports to disengage the driven gear carried thereby from said driving gear.
13. In a gluing machine, in combination, a glue applying roll having separated glue applying faces, a roll supporting said glue applying roll and receiving pressure from said glue applying faces, means for rotating said second named roll, and means for shift ing said second named roll longitudinally to and fro to shift thereupon the points of contact with said glue applying faces.
14. In a gluing machine, in combination; A
and for transferring glue thereto, a glue feeding roll in contact with said supporting roll, means for feeding glue to said feeding roll, and means for longitudinally shifting said supporting roll to and fro to distribute I the glue received from said feed roll and to shift the points of support of said glue applying faces on said yielding covering.
