To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL T. MC:
United States, residing at St. Petersburg, in the county of Pinellas and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'Casement-Window-Operating Devices; and I do declare the following to 'be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable *others skilled in.
the .art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in windows,
shutters and like.
' The mainobject of siderable leverage will be exerted thereby on the initial opening movement thereof and at the end of. itsclosmg movement, whereclosed onlthe actuation of said device.
Another object ofthe invention is'to provide a simply constructed and eflicient device of this character which operates automatically on the swinging of the member to which it is applied to lock said-member and hold it until manually released.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which mav be applied equally well to a sash hinged either to .the sidesor to the top or bottom of a window frame and which may be used in connection with screened windows" and mounted to work either right or left-handed as deslred.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of .certain novel features of construction, combination. and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and'claimed.

The operating device constituting this invention comprises a lever 10 which is here shown composed of a strip or bar of metal curved abruptly edgewise at one end to form an an'gularly-disposed attaching arm 10 This lever is provided on its inner edge with.-. a plurality spaced notches 11 for a purpose to be described. The free end of this lever arm 10 is pivotally connected with a bracket 12 which is here shown L-shaped in cross section with one arm extending laterally ivotallyconnected with the lever arm 10" the remainder. thereof, the open rear por-' .tion being disposed to register with the slot or opening 5 in the frame of the screen 3,
see Figs. 3 and 4. This casing 14 may be of any suitable or desired shape and. is shown as provided with a horizontally disposed partition 15 arranged between the top and bottom of said casing and which is designed to form a guard or guide for the operating lever 10 which the, opening 5 in the screen and through an opening 16 in one side wall of the casing, 14, see Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4.
Extending transversely through the casing 14 and guard 15 mounted therein and entering the window sill S, are two spaced longitudinally alining screws 17 and 18 between which said lever is mounted and in connection with which it is designed to cooperate in performing its function" as will be hereinafter 'more fully described. The
screw 17 is so positioned that the notches and I passes through L engagement with said screw by a spring 19 with a downturned finger 21 which'is ar-- ranged to bear on the edge of the lever 10 opposite to that in which the notches 11 are formed. Itwill thus be observed that this spring .19 exerts its tension to normally force said lever .into engagement with the screw 17 so that when said'lever is moved longitudinally with its inner edge slidably engaging said screw, it will automatically spring into locking engagement with the screw immediately when one of the notches 11 thereof comes opposite said screw and when so positioned, the arm 20 together with the finger 21 on the arm 22 will yieldably but reliably hold said lever in locked engagement with the screw 17.
A roller 23 is revolubly mounted on the screw 18 below the guard or partition 15,
see Figs. 4:, 5 and 6. This roller 23 is designed to engage the curved rear edge of the lever arm 10 the angle of which is such that when said lever is pressed against the roller 23 at the beginning of the opening or at the end of the closing movement of the lever, said roller operates as a fulcrum for said lever whereby considerable leverage is produced and the sash easily and quickly forced open or closed according to the direction in which the lever 10 is moved This leverage is obtained owing to the peculiar angle of the lever arm or end 10 formed by the abrupt curve at its junction with the body of the lever and its engagement with the roller 23.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,
it will be obvious that this lever 10 is straight throughout the greater portion. of its length, the curve therein being formed at the junction thereof with its arm 10 and said curve being so abrupt as to posi tion said arm in a plane substantially at right angles to the body portion of the lever. The lever arm 10 is here shown provided at its'pivoted end with a plurality of longitudinally spaced apertures 10 to provide for the proper setting'of the sash in or out from the face'of the frame and this is accompli'shed by -using the aperture 10 most suitable for connecting the lever 10 with t e bracket 12 and then cutting. ed the pert oh of the lever which projects beyond the aperture 10 which has been used.
A catch 24 is mounted on. the window sill Sand. is designed to engage and securely lock; the lever 10 when the sash is in closed position as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, whereby the sash is firmlyheld closed. This catch 24; is here shown in the form of a metal plate or strap with an upturned hook or .nose 25 for engaging and holding the tact with the roller 23 and this engagement,
together with the force exerted by the operator on the handle 13, will forciblypush the sash 1 into open position as shown in Fig. 2 and when it has been disposed at the desired angle, one of the notches 11 of said lever will be engaged with the screw 17 and the spring 19 bearing on said leverand screw will reliably hold the lever in locked engagement with the screw, thereby firmly and reliably'holding the sash in adjusted position where it will remain until the lever 10 is manually released from the screw 17.
From the foregoing description, it will also be obvious that should the window be left open without engaging one of the notches of the lever 10 with the screw 17 and should the sash 1 swing either outwardly or inwardly under the pressure or? wind or otherwise, it would be immediately locked when the first notch in said iever comes opposite the screw 1'? and thus all possibility of the sash being blown hack and forth and broken is prevented.
i It will thus be seen that this device may be applied to a window without marring or injuring the frame of either the sash or the Window as two screws only are necessary for connecting the device with the window sash and three for connecting it with the sill.
I claim as my invention t 1. The combination with a casement win dow, of an operating device therefor comspaced uprights positioned for the passage of said lever between them, a spring coiled on one of said uprights and having arms, one of which is positioned to engage said lever and the otherto engage the other upright, whereby said lever is yieldably held in contact with one of said uprights.
2. The combination with a casement window, of an operating device therefor comprising a lever provided in one edge with. a plurality of longitudinally spaced notches, a casing having spaced upright elements mounted therein, said casing having openings in its oppositely disposed vside walls for the passage of said lever therethrough, said lever being arranged between said upright elementaa'spring coiled on one of said elements and having arms, one positioned to engage saidlever and the other to engage the other upright eleent whereby said le- Ver is yieldably held in contact with one of said upright elements.
3. The combination with a casement window, of an operating device therefor comprising a curved lever provided in one edge with a plurality of longitudinally spaced notches, a casing having spaced upright elements mounted therein, said casing having openings in its oppositely disposed side Walls for the passage of said lever therethrough, said lever being arranged between said upright elements, a spring coiled on one of said elements and having arms, one positioned to engage said lever and the other to engage the other upright element, whereby said lever is yieldably held in contact with one of said upright elements, and a roller mounted on said spring carried upright element and adapted to engage the edge of said lever opposite to that which carries the notches.
4. The combination with a casement window, of an operating device therefor comprising a curved lever provided in one edge with a plurality of longitudinally spaced notches, a casing having spaced upright elements mounted therein, said casing having openings in its oppositely disposed side walls for the passage of said lever therethrough, said lever being arranged between said upright elements, a spring coiled on one of said elements and having arms, one positioned to engage said lever and the other to engage the other upright element, whereby said lever is yieldably held in contact with one of said upright elements, a roller mounted on said spring carried upright element and adapted to engage the edge of said lever opposite to that which carries the notches, and a tion mounted in said casing intermediately between its top and bottom walls and over said lever forming a guard for the lever.
