ERNEST LOUIS RANKIN, OF EAST SHEEN, ENGLAND.
BRAIDING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 18, 1916.
' Application filed November 20, 1914. Serial No. 873,163.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ERNEST LOUIS RANKIN, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 17 Portsman avenue, East Sheen, Surrey, England, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Braiding-Machines, of whiph the following is a specification.
This invention relates to braiding machines wherein upper and lower sets of bobbins are rotated in opposite directions by upper and lower spiders driven through bevel or other suitable gearing, and in which a number of slotted or gapped disks mount-- ed on the upper spider engage by a flange on their peripheries, grooves in the upper bobbin carriers which are mounted to slide on a circular track formed by the upturned edge of the lower spider, the threads from the lower set of bobbins being passed under and over the threads of the upper set of bobbins by thread throwing arms which cooperate with the gaps or slots in the disks and with slots'in the lower spider for that purpose.
Now this invention has for its objects'to simplify and improve the operation of the thread passing or throwing arms and incidentally the construction of the machine.
The invention is hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of part of a braiding machine constructed according to this invention, Fig. 2 is a part plan, Fig. 3 is a section taken along the line 3-3 Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a similar view to Fig. 1 illustrating a modified form of construction.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 3 the upper and lower spiders a b are driven in opposite directions by the bevel gear wheels 0 cl which are geared to the bevel pinion e on the driving shaft 7, the bevel wheel 0 being connected by a boss or sleeve 0 thereon provided with clutch teeth, with similar teeth on the central boss or sleeve 6 of the lower spider b and the bevel wheel cl being keyed to the central shaft 9 which is keyed in the central boss or sleeve of the upper spider a.
The upper spider a, which as illustrated, consists of a circular plate or disk carries the gapped disks h which are formed with short spindles or cranks 71. mounted to rotate in vertical hearings in the spider a near the outer edge thereof and carry pinions i which mesh with an internal ring of teeth 7' formed in a cylindrical casting b resting on the lower spider b and forming a removable extension thereof.
As shown, the bottom spider Z) is of hollow or box-like form, having an upwardly extending cylindrical outer wall on which bearings 12 are provided for a series of rocking spindles 79 provided with ball cranks at their outer ends. At these ends the spindles 7a are'each fitted with a sliding pin Z which has a ring or eye m encircling the ball of the rocking spindle 7:. The pin Z is of square cross section and passes through a square hole in the head a of a pin mounted to oscillate in a bearing bracket 0 in the lower spider and carrying the thread throwing arm p. At the inner end of the ball crank rocking spindle Z: a head is provided having a square transverse aperture into which a pin Z of square cross section is arranged to slide, said pin having a ring or eye m which fits over a ball spindle or arm 9 mounted radially on a central oscillating sleeve 1'.
The machine shown in Figs. 1 and 3 has eight radial arms or spindles q arranged in staggered relation to obtain the known two over two pattern of braiding and adapted to be connected'with a corresponding number of ball crank rockers 77, but there can be as many ball spindles as is necessary, according to the number of spools on the machine. The oscillating sleeve 1- revolves bodily with the bottom spider b and is oscillated by means of a small crank or eccentric disk 8 supported in a journal bearing 2. carried around by the bottom spider.
The crank pin is engaged to the oscillating sleeve by means of a connecting rod t and arm F. To the bottom end of the crank shaft 8 is fitted a small pinion s which revolves around 'a stationary gear 8 supported by the base plate .9 of the machine. In this way an oscillating movement is obtained and the above mentioned radial arms or spindles q mounted on the oscillating sleeve 1' impart through the rocking spindles la the necessary motion to the thread throwing arms 22 to raise and lower the threads as required.
The method of lubricating the main bearings of the flanged disks mounted on the top spider is as follows: A circular oil groove u is turned in the top spider, this groove having radial ducts u communicating with it which lead to the disk bearings. Centrifu- 'necting rod gal action, when the {machine is running causes the oil to flow through the ducts d to bearings in which the -shanks'fldisks h rotate. I r u y In the modified form of construction shown in Fig. 4, the oscillating sleeve car-f. rying the ball spindles g is driven direct from the central shaft;g,throughB a spun wheel 9 and pinion g keyed on one end of a vertical crank shaft 9 which'is mountedto revolve in a bearing; bfQin the spider b, and connected with the sleeve?" by a con-.,.
This arrangement can be convenientlyemployed when a large number ofspindles g are used in -the same machine requiring a sleeve of large diameter.
What I claim, and desire; tosecureibyr. Letters Patent is 1. In a braiding machine comprising-upper andlower spiders, driven in opposite. directions and carrying upperland lower sets of bobbins or spools, a thread passingmovementcomprising a seriesof thread throwing.
